Murray Walker's German Grand Prix preview

Post categories:

Murray Walker | 08:49 UK time, Wednesday, 8 July 2009

It's hard to predict what will happen in this year's German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Last year's race was held in Hockenheim and was won by Lewis Hamilton with Nelson Piquet Jr in second, hardly a useful form guide for the 2009 race! Click on the video to see why I think we could be in for one or two surprises and find out why I think Ferrari might come to the party, in a big way.

Wise prediction Murray, and I think many people would put their money on Jenson Button to win. It's a tough call between the Brit and Sebastien Vettel, and I hope there is a close fight between the two.

It would also be good to see Rubens Barrichello repeat his 2000 glories, or Webber to finally get off the Mark!

I don't think Ferrari will challenge for a victory in the slightest, and I don't expect them to do so at any point in the season remaining. Toyota have a better chance than the Scuderia, I think.

I think the highest-placed German driver will most certainly be Timo Glock.

  • Comment number 2.

Jenson will bounce back, in Germany
what about Coultard for the FIA chairman?

  • Comment number 3.

The forecast for Germany is cold and heavy rain, and the Red Bull is the master of the cold or wet conditions. The region is particularly prone to rain anyway (just look at 2007 European Grand Prix), So personally i think that Button has a small chance of winning, but not as great as Red Bull. Vettel for pole on Light fuel to please fans. Hamilton to do better with Kers as well.

  • Comment number 4.

I don't think Ferrari will trouble the top two teams unless it rains. If it does anything could happen. Massa had a good race in the wet in China, perhaps he could be a surprise contender. If it's dry though, I'd back Vettel for another win, with Button either 3rd or 4th.

Hello again Murray i always like listening to your views there are people out their saying Red Bull is the fastest car and ahead of the Brawn performance wise.So then we look at the two drivers Jenson and Seb as a Brit I will be rooting for Jenson but Seb is so mature for his age when on track and you can't help liking the bloke he would give Shumi a run for his money personality wise.I believe Ferrari need to be on the front of the grid to have any chance of a win.Over to you Murray!

Welcome back F1 fans. After a three week break, we are back with Germany, so now is the time to get your questions in to Murray. I will be filming with him on Monday, so the more the merrier. Also don't forget as well as all of the excellent coverage across the ´óÏó´«Ã½, keep an eye out for 'Inside F1' tonight and Saturday on the News Channel and ´óÏó´«Ã½2. Enjoy

Great as always to hear you wise words Murray, my money if I were a betting man would also go on Jenson, he has a great car under him and will be eager to show that what happened at Silverstone was just a one off.

For the season I hope its either Rubens (remember he is 2nd in the drivers championship people) or Vettle as they are the only 2 who I feel can challenge Jenson for the DWC... Sorry but I just don't think Mark has that spark to make a late charge, he is a great consistent driver no doubts in my mind about that, but he is too far behind now.

I would love to see Massa win a race, he showed last season that he is a great driver and again this season he has buckled down and kept focused whilst doing his best to drive his team forwards, but I doubt it will be here unless the weather or safety cars become an issue. Brawn and Red Bull are to dominant.

My other hope for this weekend has already taken a battering, I want this petty squabbling between the FIA and FOTA to stop! I am past caring who is in the right or the wrong... I just want to indulge myself in my passion for this great sport, without all this stupid posturing and idiocy!

Question Murray which gave me food for thought whilst listening to a man who has a great voice for radio ex Jordan chappie and a friend of yours Ian Phillips,He reckons we are all looking through rose tinted glasses when we talk of overtaking even in days gone by their wasn't a lot and when there was he put it down to manual gearboxes where now they are computerised.Do you agree?

  • Comment number 9.

Its a great pity Barrichello did not get the teams point of view before talking to the media.
It has been obvious all weekend that the Red Bull cars were quicker

  • Comment number 10.

Do you think bourdais, Nakajima an Piquet Jr. deserve to go after beating their team mates this year?

Facts: Bourdais has a higher average finishing position than Buemi. Nakajima has been robbed on numerous occasionsand Grosjean wouldn't give anything more than Piquet and would give the team a worse finish. Piquet is having a hard time and nobody is bothering to ask him why he is slow as we have done so to Brawn.

    Hi Murray,
If, as predicted, Max Mosely steps down as FIA chairman, who would be your choice for the role?

  • Comment number 12.

Hi Murray. Was Rubens' outburst out of order, or a rare case these days of a driver simply being passionate for his sport?

  • Comment number 13.

After watching F1 for so many years, I was ecstatic to see Webber pick up his maiden F1 win. Surely now he has been robbed of his bad luck that has plagued him since his Jaguar days.

I think that mantle has now fallen to Adrian Sutil after witnessing Monaco GP last year and this year's German Gp, amazingly both incidents involving Raikkonen.

Martin Brundle eluded to it in commentary that it was just marked down as a 'racing incident'. However, after witnessing that and Webber's drive-through punishment, do you the race stewards should have penalised Raikkonen for the clash with Sutil and let the Webber-Barrichello incident slide?

True, Raikkonen had the racing line and Webber won the GP, but I would like your expert opinion Murray.

    Thanks

    Dave

PS. Murray to run for FIA president????

  • Comment number 14.

    Hi there,

I'm Roy Calley, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ editor who films Murray's pieces with him.

What a riveting German Grand Prix that was.

We'd now like your questions for the next entries on Murray's video blog, which we are filming on Monday 13 July. So, anything you want to ask him about that's F1-related - Nurburgring or otherwise - this is the place to post them below.

We look forward to reading them, thanks.

  • Comment number 15.

Hey Roy, here's my first attempt at this Q & A thing with Murray haha!

Murray, do you think Ari Vatanen would be a good FIA President? And how do you think F1 would be different under his leadership?

    Ben

hello murray thanks for answering my question the other week. do you think brawn and jenson can go on to win a title this season? moving on to the hotter circuits it may be a intresting second half of the season! good to see lewis hamilton getting more out of the car at germany, can you see him winning this season or even getting a podium?

  • Comment number 17.

Are Mclaren and Lewis Hamilton back?

  • Comment number 18.

Hi Murray. A clearly stunned Eddie Jordan spoke of his disapproval ahead of the British GP regarding Jensen Button's clowning around with Jake Humphrey in a Merc round Silverstone for a VT item for ´óÏó´«Ã½'s race-day coverage - Eddie said he was shocked Brawn GP let him do this. Isn't this kind of jokey stuff the real reason JB has taken his eye off the ball since Monaco? He drove badly at Silverstone and barely improved in Germany. Ross Brawn needs to get the whole team refocused - especially with his real star Reubens clearly running out of patience with both Button and the Brawn GP team.

  • Comment number 19.

with maclaren making so much headway with the new parts fitted to lewis car do you think he could still challenge for the f1 title in 2009 !

  • Comment number 20.

    Hi there,

I know this point is a little trivial compared to some, but what is your view on all the Santander sponsored trophies in F1 at the moment?

I know they put lots of money into the sport so they can do what they like, but for me there was something special about the different trophies each country awarded its GP winner. They don't even change the sizes between 2nd and 3rd place anymore! Like I said this is hardly a pivotal matter for F1 right now, but I can't imagine drivers have the same sort of pride as they once would have, looking at an almost identical trophy cabinet!
Remember when Nigel Mansell took a huge paycut just to keep his original trophies, there was a great story behind many of them in those days too. It's a small matter but it does highlight just how corporate and dull F1 can be at times...I'd be very interested to know how others feel about this!
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Comment number 21.

Murray, what do you most like about F1 2009 and what do you dislike most?
Also, was Rubens' attack unfair and uncalled for?

  • Comment number 22.

    Hi ya Murray,

    hope your well!

Question: What do you make of Barrichellos comments after the race, and more important where they now leave him with the team for the future. How do you see Ross Brawn taking to comments like that?

    Thanks!

  • Comment number 23.

    Hello Murray.
Would you not consider standing for FIA president? You've a lot of respect across the world. From growing up with you commentary, I doubt you'd take the pointless politics too seriously.

James Hunt, Martin Brundle or David Coulthard? Who's the best commentator's sidekick?

  • Comment number 24.

    Murray,

Nico Rosberg seems to be a dark horse this year who has taken little to no coverage off anyone. Coming from 15th to 4th in the last GP was an outstanding achievement mentioned by no-one. Why is he doing so well but Nakajima performing so poorly? Rosbergs contract is also up at the end of the season - if he wasn't to renew with Williams, surely he could only make a step forward, but where do you think it would be to?

  • Comment number 25.

Hi Murray! Got two questions for you here. One, can Lewis Hamilton actually win a race or at least get another couple of points this season and two, was Rubens Barrichello right to have his outburst at the team towards Lee McKenzie straight after the race?

  • Comment number 26.

    Hi Murray,

What in your view is the best-looking F1 car of all time? A lot of this season's cars (in particular the Red Bulls and Renaults) look phenomenally unattractive, but there have been plenty of pretty ones down the years - so which is your favourite?

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Murray

With the Championship being turned on it's head this year with the decline of Ferrari and McLaren, who in your opinion is the greatest driver currently? This year has certainly proved that the car does make a great deal of difference

  • Comment number 28.

Murray, interested to hear your opinion on next years 'no refueling'
regs. For many with a short(er)attention span it may get boring, simply watching a parade of cars for an hour and a half.

  • Comment number 29.

when was the last time all the first 8 races were won by drivers who had not won a grand prix at the start of the season

  • Comment number 30.

    Hello Murray,

With the news that Jaime Alguersuari will replace Sebastien Bourdais for Hungary onwards do you feel Formula One is moving in the right direction by promoting so many younger drivers into the sport without any substantial racing experience?

I realise there has been many exceptions to the rule concerning traditional ways into Formula One, but doesn't the admission of drivers with no real junior Formula experience inevitably damage the likes of GP2?

    Thanks,
    Ewan Marshall

  • Comment number 31.

Murray, as I know you are as much a fan of the racing on 2 wheels as well as four, Do you think Valentino Rossi would be able to race successfully in formula one? With Rumours of Motorsports stars such as Sebastian Loeb interested in getting a drive as well, who else could make a transition to the sport and succeed?

  • Comment number 32.

    Hi Murray

does Sebastian Bourdais deserve to keep his seat at Toro Rosso?

  • Comment number 33.

    Hi Murray

Do you feel that Rubens Barrichello's out burst after the race was a result of him knowing that he does not have a job next year

  • Comment number 34.

    Dear Murray (again)
Do you think more drivers should be outspoken?

  • Comment number 35.

    Murray ...

Why do we never get such political bickering and arguing in other forms of motorsport ?? Can't all the F1 Teams just get on and race ??

  • Comment number 36.

    Re: # 29

Jenson Button won his 1st Race in Hungary 2006 and Sebastian Vettel won at Monza 2008, so that hasn't happened this year (unless you meant they hadn't previously won a Championship). I can't think of a time that did happen though (except the 1st ever season of course lol!)

  • Comment number 37.

    Hi Murray

Did Mark Webber deserve a drive through penelty for his antics at the start of the German grand prix?

  • Comment number 38.

    Hi Murray
    1. Do you think that it is fair to the fans, that teams like Ferrari and McLaren etc. are concentrating on their next years cars, instead of focusing on giving us something to watch this year, to get exited about?

    2. What is your most favourite piece of sporting memoribilia that you own and why.
    Regards
    Paul
