Murray Walker's Hungarian Grand Prix preview

Murray Walker | 10:50 UK time, Wednesday, 22 July 2009

We are off to Hungary on Sunday for the tenth race of the season and one where getting on the front row is very, very important. It is virtually impossible to pass at the Hungaroring, it's a little bit like Monaco without the houses. I think we could be in for another fantastic race, if you ask me I think it is wide open. It's not just between Brawn and Red Bull in Hungary, click on the video below to see why I think Renault, Williams, Ferrari and McLaren all have a decent chance.

Good preview murray yet again but what was your favourite Hungarian race?

  • Comment number 2.

I see the right preview is on now - the Malaysian GP was reviewed again before! It was all about diffusers!

Hoping for a good race but the KERS cars could make a right mess of it at the start and for the race so pole is crucial and the polesitter will also need 'back up' from another non-KERS car at least.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rubens AKA Raging Bull win his first race under Brawn GP.

    Murray Walker = legend

  • Comment number 4.

Yes Murray, in theory it can be very hot in Hungary but I remember it tipping it down on the Saturday when I was there in '04. Wouldn't take anything for granted weather wise. Hoping Jenson can regain form though.

Good preview Murray, the start will be interesting, as gingerboy99 has stated above, and if, as you say, McLaren are on the up, they could use that (KERS starts) to their advantage.

Interesting you didn't mention Toyota. Despite their horrific race in Germany last fortnight, Jarno Trulli set the race's second-fastest lap, and Timo Glock fought from the pitlane all the way to 9th, and right up the rear of points-finishing cars. We mustn't forget Glock's 2nd place finish last year, and Toyota have always seemed to prefer hotter race temperatures -- the fight between themselves and Ferrari for 3rd in the constructors' championship should be interesting...

Great preview. Heat/humidity coupled with tyre wear can be a huge factors in Hungary. I think the h/h will give the Brawns a chance unless its coole ron Saturday in which case......!

  • Comment number 7.

Fingers crossed for JB, he needs win #7 to halt the Red Bull dominance. Good Luck!

  • Comment number 8.

Murray says it is impossible to pass at the hungaroring so how could it be A FANTASTIC RACE!! the whole idea of racing is to pass the guy in front, I still watch F1 but I must admit there seems to no real racing!!! the guys in the pit lane sticking the fuel in now seem to be the guys making the difference so stop the high pay to the drivers and give the main money to the race engineers.

Met Murray many years ago with Damon Hill what a charming man Murray is.

Many and best regards from the sunny Algarve.

    Hmmm,
A toughie - Monaco without the houses eh?
Then maybe a little unpredictable methinks...
If the upgrades to Brawn are anything to go by then we might get a repeat of the Brawn one-two for the next few races, thus ending any chance of Button being pipped to the championship.I hope it's not the case - other factors have come into the equation and the other teams with the bucks have indeed caught up.
Toyota just don't fail to disappoint - and they will continue to do so.
    It's all in the qualies-
I think Hamilton/Maclaren and Alonso/Renault will play a significant part in this race - it's not a fast track so the advantages in terms of pure speed will be minimal overall, and it's proved not to be a "regulation" winning circuit for drivers with the "best" cars.

Hi everyone...just to say that this weekend Murray has a prior commitment and so won't be in a position to answer your questions until after the mid season break. We will have Jonathan Legard's race review and preview for the next Grand Prix, so keep checking the site. Also keep an eye out for 'Inside F1' this evening and tomorrow on the News Channel, red button, web site, i player and ´óÏó´«Ã½ 2!!!
Special guest tonight is Mike Gascoyne and John Watson tomorrow. Thanks, and yours in F1

Come on Murray. You can't afford time off. Just because you're 85 doesn't mean that you can leave us with ex drivers, ex managers, commentators and a very tall man called Jake blogging about F1 while you're away. It's all very good but in the end they're all a bit blah blah blah. We want to hear from the legend - and that's you. So pull your F1 finger out and give us fans some real insight from the best F1 commentator in the world.
I talk in jest. You can have as much time off as you want. But not too much eh?
Hope everything's well with you Murray. You're a true Gentleman. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi there,

We'd now like your questions for the next entries on Murray's video blog, which we are filming on Monday 24 August. So, anything you want to ask him about that's F1-related - European GP or otherwise - this is the place to post them below.

We look forward to reading them, thanks.

    Hello Murray,

How do you rate Valencia's street circuit compared to Monaco and Singapore? I personally find it rather boring, what do you think?

  • Comment number 14.

When do you expect the teams to start the driver shuffle that is obviously coming, where do you think Kubica will end up? Any chance of him pairing up with Lewis at Mclaren or do you think he will be looking for a tea to lead?

  • Comment number 15.

i heard on 5 live they were discussing about Luca Badoer being the worst driver ever what do you think?

  • Comment number 16.

Also how do you think Badoer did? Was his performance in a car he hadn't driven before, on a track he hadn't raced at before and the fact he hadn't raced in 10 years good enough to merit a drive at Spa? Would they have been better to get Nelson Piquet to drive for them?

  • Comment number 17.

    Hi Murray :)

I just wanted to know what you would be telling Button at this point in the season. What do you think he needs to do to get back on the podium again?

  • Comment number 18.

    Hi Murray

Most F1 fans would like to see Alonso in a Ferrari next year, but is it a realistic hope with two drivers under contract until 2011?

  • Comment number 19.

looking at force india getting better and better as the season progress do you think they will play a part by the end of the year in deciding who the word champion will be!! make this season even more exciting! and what about next year, will force india be the best team at the back end of the grid when compared to the new teams coming in or do u think they will make more headway scoring points regularly?

    Hi Murray

Where do you see drivers like Alonso and Raikkonen being in 3 or 4 years time?

  • Comment number 21.

    Hello Murray,

Who's Button's biggest rival for the championship now, in your opinion?

I hope you and Elizabeth are well.

  • Comment number 22.

    Hi Murray,

Aren't Williams having a good year? My question is what do you think about the potential split with Toyota? what are the reasons for it?

  • Comment number 23.

    hi murray,

just wondered if anything happened with lewis after the valencia race finnished and when he was parking up it looked like he was gonna run rubens over as rubens had to jump out the way !!

  • Comment number 24.

Hello Murray, hope you are well!

My question: How do you rate Kazuki Nakajima’s race performances when compared with his teammate Nico Rosberg?

  • Comment number 25.

With Schumacher injured, Massa injured and Badoer (lets face it) RUBBISH, is Marc Gene Ferrari's only realistic option for the rest of the season?

  • Comment number 26.

hi murray if you were in charge at ferrari who would you have picked to replace felipe massa?

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Murray.
How, in this day and age, have the designers of Valencia managed to make such a good looking track that is so boring! Two very dull GPs have been held so far on this track that replaced the excellent Nürburgring!?! On top of this, much of the crowd will only attend for Alonso, that can't be right, can it?

    Cheers.

  • Comment number 28.

    Hello Murray

Was wandering what you thought of Luca Badoer. Should Ferrari have put him in as a good will gesture? Who should get the seat for Spa?

    Thanks

  • Comment number 29.

    Dear Mr Walker,
Thank You for all the years of commentary. You are really missed. Did you notice during the Valencia commentary, "Jensen Button is going backwards, not forwards." I wonder how many people were watching for a car reversing around the circuit against the traffic. All the very best, Brian

  • Comment number 30.

    Hi Murray,

How pleased are you for Rubens Barrichello, who won for the first time in nearly five years in Valencia?

Love the work, keep it up!

    Sean

  • Comment number 31.

Do you think tracks like Valencia should host F1 races where there is little or no overtacking or go to historical tracks that are built for racing?

  • Comment number 32.

KERS IS A GREAT INVENTION AND SHOULD BE ALLOWED

  • Comment number 33.

IF WE HAD ANY FORWARD THINKING IN THIS COUNTRY ,WE WOULD HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC F1 CIRCUIT IN AND AROUND THE DOCKLANDS , TO RIVAL ANY OTHER CIRCUIT IN THE WORLD, USING THE OLYMPIC STADIUM AS ITS CENTER, WHICH WOULD BE USED FOR YEARS NOT JUST TWO WEEKS OF 2012.

  • Comment number 34.

Do you think kovalainen has done enough this season to retain his seat at mclaren for 2010?

  • Comment number 35.

hi murray, do you think Ferrari made a wrong choice choosing Luca Badoer to driver for them? Also, do you think Alonso will ever drive for Ferrari?

  • Comment number 36.

    Murray where are you ??
