Murray Walker's F1 season review part two

Post categories:

Murray Walker | 16:10 UK time, Wednesday, 29 June 2011

The thrilling 2011 Formula 1 season raced on from Istanbul to Valencia with four more victories for Red Bull's supreme world champion Sebastian Vettel and an inspiring drive from last-to-first for McLaren's Jenson Button. But Lewis Hamilton finds himself in "dispirited" mood and Ferrari are fighting hard but are still without their first win of the season.

Watch my review of the second half of the 2011 Formula 1 season.

My only complaint is on Massa. He had the pace in Turkey and Monaco to finish well into the points, possibly 4th on both occasionas, I belive, but in both cases luck was against him. Catalunya was pretty terrible, but then in Montreal he was clearly FASTER than Alonso in the wet and was less than a tenth of second behind in qualifying; and it gets no mention? Nor his subsequent bad luck in the race, or managing to keep in the race unlike his teamate (though he still spun it into a wall).

No mention of his pretty impressive (but rather cautious unfortunatly) start in Valencia? Nor how the teams priority system ruined his race. He was ahead of Hamilton before he pitted, and came out over 10 seconds behind if I remember rightly; he finished 5 seconds behind Hamilton despite also having yet another slow (over 8 seconds) pitstop at one point.

Besides that, why is there absolutely no mention of his much stronger form this season relative to last? Why is he getting so much flak for being 2 tenths slower than Alonso, yet Webber is getting almost none for being even further behind Vettel? I know alot of people simply could not bring themselves to accept that Massa deserved his Ferrari seat, even after his brilliant 2008 season and even better 2009 (not in terms of points, but in terms of how good he did relative to the car). I guess some still hold somehwat of a grudge against him or something for it.

In 2010 he struggled due to the extremely hard Bridgestone tures, he does so on the harder Pirelli compounds as well. Points do not mean everything, he is doing fine considering we are comparing him to ALONSO.

@1 Completley agree! Most sense I've ever heard any F1 fan speak. The lack of repseact the bbc gives felipe massa is rubbish! He is doing far better this year, and with just a tad more luck would have got two or three podiums by now

    good work Murray

Great vidio Murray, agree with @1 about massa but he has really been dominated by alonso and i think that he deserves another. Im getting bored with vettel and the championship which for me is making the racing boring. Hopefully silverstone will make this better with the ban on off throttal difuser. C'mon i wanna see a very close championship not one person winning all the time esecialy when you dont support him.

    *another chance. Sorry

´óÏó´«Ã½ be ashamed! Murray's blog is not easy to find on the F1 ´óÏó´«Ã½ page!

Whenever you think of F1 you think of Murray Walker and so his blog should be extremely obvious!

The title is over but there is a good scrap for 2nd place involving 4 drivers which I'm looking forward to following.

Nice blog as always Murray although I do have a question for your next blog: Can you see a team other than the big 3 (RBR, Ferrari, McLaren) winning a race this season?

Hi Murray, seems to me you are sitting on the fence these days and stating the obvious; not like you @ all! You are always fun & always followed you, thank you.

Now off the fence: Maclaren have not provided a 'fast' car for over 2 season now, therefore: why? have they put all their spare cash into that sports car, so no money left to F1, is the engine not up to it? or is it everything ie managemet; Who is going to supply the new engines to Maclaren. Very sad to have Lewis & Jensen not having the gear to set pole! Whitmarsh must go!

@8 I suspect it is due to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ film crew turning up to meet Murray with full pre-written script in hand and sketches of all the scenes they need to film to make the piece. Blame those weak script writers.

great blog murray, completely agree with you on red bull, unless the other teams have dramatically changed and updated their cars I fear this seasons over. 1 little thing though 1988 wasn't boring prost vs senna was brilliant

Another great Blog Murray, thanks so much.

Only let down by the shocking editing and switching from one camera angle to the other every few seconds, come on Beeb, you can do better than that Murray has worked hard for 50 years, surely you can do a bit better too ....

Excellent video blog Murray, you are a legend. Please keep going! It's a shame you aren't an official ´óÏó´«Ã½ punter on the live ´óÏó´«Ã½1 show, your input and wisdom is invaluable - and so refreshing that you aren't biased like DC who's in Red Bull's back pocket!

Thank you for reminding us that a dominating team doesn't spoil the racing! It's important to remember to enjoy F1 even if you're not a Red Bull fan. Don't you agree that Adrian Newey is probably the greatest champion currently working in the sport, equal with Michael Schumacher?

Great to see you Murray-- I hope you'll put in a commentary or two soon. Sorry to chip in with a nitpick that I can't find anywhere else to post, but why does Martin Brundle have to use American affectations like "race car" or "formula 1 car" instead of "car", "race track" instead of "track" and "grand prix" instead of "race"?
