Talk about Newsnight

Paul Mason's Idle Scrawl

That Newsnight relaunch in full...

Keep a watch out for Newsnight's relaunch tonight. Like all relaunches it will be underhyped in case it goes wrong. It is in fact a redesign of the studio, with whizzy technology, and more kinds of seat for people to quake in as Jeremy interviews them (inlcuding me!). The title music has apparently been sped up by 2 beats per minute...

...and that's all, so all rumours of a hip-hop version along the lines of Britain's Eurovision entry can be categorically denied. (Also, dressing everybody in retro Star Trek outfits was rejected early at the design stage). There is a new title sequence. Because the ´óÏó´«Ã½ does not do promotions for Newsnight, sadly there will be no nifty adverts of the presenters pretending to speak into their mobile phones. We will try not to "wave our arms about and emote" - so Jack Straw can settle down with his Horlicks tonight secure in the knowledge he will not spill it. As you all know, here on Newsnight we prefer the approach. I am off this afternoon to meet a legendary business bigwig, unless the stockmarket tanks sommmore, in which case you will see the relaunched version of me on screen sometime after 10.30pm. (Director - what's my motivation?)

Playing the Montenegrin national anthem at the end of the programme was a neat idea, but it's a pity that Newsnight couldn't find a proper recording and had to make do with a MIDI version.

Congradulations on the relaunching of Newsnight.
