Paul Mason's Idle Scrawl

World Exclusive! England on song, on Newsnight

Stand by for a genuine world exclusive on Newsnight (Wed 2230GMT). Never mind our 24 hour news colleagues who have been hanging around a hospital worrying about some bloke and his metatarsal - we have vintage footage, never seen before, of the classic 1966 England Cup Winning Team singing a, characteristically awful, football song. Plus we have decided to have a go at the West Lothian question - our colleagues on Newsnight Scotland are threatening to come and dig up our turf and swing from our goalposts. And I'll be number crunching the NHS deficit (or as the Audit Commission calls it, the NHS England).

I would like to hear the football song. As for health care, I recommend "Cutting Health Care: The Pros and Cons" at amazon.co.uk

If Eric Joyce's arguments is the best that the Government can come up with then we will have English government before Gordon Brown can say 'Wayne Rooney'. And about time too.

Eric Joyce didnt attempt to answer the West Lothian question, he just kept harping on about the strong economy.

The Government started the process of devolution, now they need to finish it, much like the reform of the Lords which they seem to have put on the back burners after the first stage was completed.

The Scots-dominated Labour government is having to face the fact that there is now stong demand for an English Parliament and administration equal in powers to the Scottish Parliament an Executive.
Just refusing to discuss it won't make the legitimate demands of the English go away! Why should Scottish MPs vote on English matters if their own Parliament in Edinburgh has voted the opposite on similar matters?

Who does that finance minister think he is - refusing to answer questions on Newsnight Scotland? How dare he look down on us like that? Has he forgotten that he is a servant of the people, not some high and mighty Lord, immune from questioning because of his status in the falling down palace of Holyrood? We pay his wages (and they've just given themselvs a rise). His attitutde makes a joke of the already fragile reputation of MSPs.. I'm sure I'm not the only Scottish person watching who is appalled.
