Immigration
What do the new rules mean? Are they irrelevant to the main concern of many British people - the arrival of immigrants from Eastern Europe? In fact just how many people are the new rules expected to exclude who were not previously? We have the figures.
Which way Russia?
They are now speaking of "Putinism" in Russia - and it is always a bit of a warning sign when a politician becomes an "-ism鈥. But what will this weekend's presidential elections mean for Russia's future? A former Kremlin adviser will discuss it with a leading Putin sceptic.
Labour's Spring in the Step?
We've sent Michael Crick off to the Labour spring Conference to see if the party regulars feel any optimism about their chances of winning the next election, after some dismal showings in the opinion polls. Don't forget to read Michael's blog.

Dear Newsnight
re Prince Harry and the earlier blog
perhaps you could work the story by considering what would have happened, reactions etc had he being harmed?
b) when the story leaked how easy was it to extricate him from the area he was in?
c) had he being newly deployed there?
re immigration
people should be judged on how they treat others not on their race or religion.
what has happened to the women deported who was being treated for cancer and are the people who 'carried out their orders' and did this fit for public service? Do we want these sort of people in any public service?
re Putinism, pugilitism, the guy's sticking up for his country, that is why the Russians love him.
we are not strong because others are weak?
Russia protects Europes flank, there are emerging powers in the East, we need the strongest possible Russia, perhaps Russia could join Nato and we could build up and train its forces to make them even stronger?
then we could suggest that a few million Russian soldiers are incorporated as part of a permanent standing United Nations army to sort out all the murdering dictators around the world and stop any more genocide across the globe.
best wishes
Bob

Immigration, no its about population sustainability, for it seems like madness that while we are being fed a diet of doom and gloom about global warming, where if half the warnings come true then we will be in dire straits, yet the British state is adding to its population as fast as they can, giving us the most unsustainable popultion ever just at the point when they tell us the effects of global warming will hit. Madness? It seems like it to me!

When will the Newsnight 鈥 when talking about Russian affairs 鈥 invite less odious guests such as Mr Nekrasov or Mr Filshtinsky? Apart from black and white, there are other colours to Russian politics. The question to ask is why Putin is so popular among the ordinary Russians?

Why doesn't the 大象传媒 question the concept of skills shortages, instead of just accepting what the Government says? Skills shortages suggests some fixed numerical basis(though there is no numerical limit whatsoever in the immigration policy.
But it is a relevant concept, and the assumption that 'skills shortages' must always be met by immigrant skilled labour is a disincentive to young people training here.
If the 大象传媒 had investigated the idea that the Australian points system is so successful, it might have discovered that the number of Australian out of work IT graduates equates to the number of Indian IT workers who have been given visas. And the numbers of people taking computing degrees has plummeted drastically, there.
Is this then the ideal way to deal with 'skills shortages'? And who defines these skills shortages? I have heard the 大象传媒 take information and of this sort and broadcast it as news when it has come straight from an employment agencies.
Simply not good enough

Once again Newsnight can't deal with a subject such as immigration.
Immigration is serious and if ignored will have disastrous consequences.
Most people in the UK do not have a clue about immigration and that seems to include Gavin Esler.
No other country has so many illegal immigrants as the UK. All a would be migrant needs to do is present a passport, get a six month VISA stamp and there away. There's no system available to employers to check the legal status of employees, neither do they really care. I'm sorry but France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Belgium have systems in place. If a person does not have a document to say 'able to work' then that's it, no legitmate business can employ them. We have no such system in the UK and any immigration officer will tell you so. Employing illegals is just way to easy and being an illegal immigrant is an extfremely easy existence in the UK.
Regarding immigration from EU countries, again most other EU states have quotas. They understand that there responsibilty is first and foremost to their citizens. After all what is citzenship all about anyway. It should give you the right to education, to find work legally and to be apart of society. When these rights are trampled on by mass migration, it is simply unfair. Unfortunately, it is not so easy for UK citizens to just leave and find a job in Poland or Bulgaria, or even France.
Language is of course a huge factor and also contributes to the number of people attracted to a life in the UK. English is the language of choice for the majority of young people abroad. UK children on the other hand have to choose either French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese or whatever making any decision to move to another country not so easy, especially when a high standard is required and where jobs are not so available.
Somebody somewhere really has to confront the plague of immigration as I fear the worst. Those in authority and in the media have a moral duty to do something. This points system is being talked about as if it's a solution, yet it just opens the doors even further - so we can expect a influx of young people from the USA now too. As a Brit, I can't take myself off to the USA and work. It's not like in Eastenders you know.
Regarding 'Points Systems' anyway, they have been used by new world countries such as Australia, USA, Canada to help europeanize countries with huge land masses and unpopulated areas. No where else in this world will you find a points system. You either emigrate through marriage or your company takes you there.
As stated previously, EU member states have imposed quotas on migrants to protect the local population and infrastructure which is absolutely essential to a civilized society.
Another thing, NAFTA ( the trading block of Mexico, Canada and USA ) doesn't have a free movement of people policy. Canada and the USA would never open their borders and for good reason. They're not stupid like our British politicians and their citizens would be walking around with guns if they ever did.
This whole immigration business is absolute madness and an insult to the Bristish people. If the is to continue letting just about everybody in then other countries should allow it to, but they don't and until they do it's simply unfair on UK citizens who have no where else to go and I'm not talking about well educated, well off Brits here, I'm talking about the average person on the street with an average education and that also wants to stay in the country of their birth.

Tier 3 for unskilled workers won't be operating for the "foreseeable future". This is typical of this government, they make headline grabbing claims about it being the biggest immigration change for 40 years, but on closer inspection it turns out that actually, part of it won't be happening for "the foreseeable future", if ever at all. Maybe in "the future" they hope we will have forgotten about this and will re-announce it as something new.
I doubt that there will be any noticeable difference on the street. If they really were interested in reducing immigration, they would have done something years ago. This is just more smoke and mirrors to try and "calm voter concerns".
Also, why was there no mention of Franco Frattini's plans to bring 20 million immigrants in from outside the EU?

Dear Newsnight
final post from me today,
Immigration
What do the new rules mean?
Perhaps it means that the time is long overdue that we brought justice to the World, fed the hungry, stopped selling armamaments to fuel wars, stop bribing despots to use their their poor countries money to buy our goods, stopped living off the debt and poverty of others...
perhaps this is what it means and how our country should be responding to immigration?
asking among other things Why?
best wishes
Bob
