Prospects for Thursday, 3 April

Carol Rubra is tonight's programme producer. Here's her early email to the team.

Good morning,

We have a few things under way but I'm interested in your ideas too and I can find space for them on the programme.

Here are the stories I'm interesting in covering at the moment - Zimbabwe, Airline trial, and we have an offer of a piece from Tim Franks about the eviction of a group of Israeli settlers.

Tony Blair is giving a speech this evening on Faith and Globalisation. I'd like to set up a discussion on this - who would you like to hear from?

Zimbabwe - I would like Stephanie to try and explain how to manage a 100,000% inflation and I'd like anyone to explain how the expectations of the people of Zimbabwe can be managed in the short term.

Mortgages - what happens in a world when people can't get a mortgage simply because they are not available?

Parliament - Vince Cable is rebuked for questioning whether The Queen is more in touch with ordinary citizens than the government; MP's expense/salaries/pensions are news because they are seen to be excessive to the ordinary citizen; official inflation is around 2% yet ordinary citizens know that their everyday inflation is probably between 6% and 8%- is the relationship between the state and the people nearing breaking point?

For the Faith and Globalisation discussion, perhaps Richard Dawkins, author of 'The God Delusion', would be suitable - I'm sure he'd have something interesting to say on that issue and Tony Blair's opinions of it.

Blair's speech seems to be at Yale?
The list of previous speakers might
spark some ideas on who to discuss
this ...... Previous lectures were
given by journalist Alistair Cooke,
Indira Ghandi, the satirist Russell
Baker, and a sprinkling of composers including Vaughan Williams ........?

You could either send this up with an invitation to Ben Elton and say
Ricky Gervais to come in to discuss
the ascent of Blair into this lark;
or (given limited budget) approach:

Gore Vidal; Charles Wheeler; Joan
Bakewell; Amatya Sen; or Germaine
Greer even .... or Rory Bremner in
a dog collar even ..............??
Barenboim and George Steiner even?

But then again if Christopher Hitchins is cheaper .........

None of the above. Population control (not the subsidiary immigration). Can the world go on growing population wise forever? If it becomes clear that we in the UK cannot what happens to the economy? Can a liberal free market system cope with static or even falling demand in the long run as population levels are maintained at a certain level? If confidence in the economic system fades will we in fifty years suddenly have a situation where confidence in the economy disappears never to return?

Has the present crisis in the international banking system been caused by the activities of the hedge funds and if so is there anyway they can be regulated.

I think the 大象传媒's output on the Middle East has vastly improved since the Balen report, so I'd like to see the report on the settlers. There's a lot going on in Israel atm and I'd like to see more of it reported.

You say the airline plot would have been the biggest terror atrocity since 9/11. In terms of numbers of civilians killed and maimed, "shock and awe" which "preceded" the invasion, designed to terrorise (literally) the Iraqi population into early submission, was the worst atrocity since 9/11, and exceeded 9/11.

Allan Lewis mentions that the 大象传媒's output since the Balen report has improved, well sorry Allan I have to disagree, even the teaser for the film regarding Israeli settlers has a bias slant towards it.

If the 大象传媒 were prepared to release the Balen report (which we all paid for) to the public that would be a start in showing that the 大象传媒 has stopped it's percieved anti-semetic reporting.

It would be better still if the 大象传媒 removed Bowen, Gardner and Plett from being allowed to report on anything to do with the Middle East.

Ken Livingstone is a cruel and cynical man. He dares suggest that family life is necessary in preventing youth going astray. He blabbers on about the importance of male role models, but what type of role does he represent? The manner in which he has tried to starve to death London's pigeons, reminds one of Mao Tse-Tung's crusade to kill all the sparrows in China! If he would deign to read the Bible, he would learn "His eye is on the sparrow". Livingstone, alas, is a man without modesty or compassion

The questions "Do UK citizens get value for money from the 大象传媒?" and the subsidiary question "To what extent does the 大象传媒 distort our national values and beliefs?" are worth asking.

With so many communication channels in television the news is available from a diverse range of sources and many do not incur a charge in this our Freeview age.

A related point is this diverse range is extended even more by the World Wide Web itself. Do we need to pay for a great big centralizing 大象传媒 behemoth?
