What are the criteria for belonging?

How, exactly, is "democracy" to be defined?

It's a good question Xie. Democracy certainly isn't an open access site run by a publicly funded broadcaster who censors viewers posts, when they make factually correct statements, hiding behind defamation law.

It seems that McCain's "foreign policy advisor" is as shallow as his boss-

The "League of Democracies" is simply a reprise of the Cold War idea, but with a multipolar (China, Russia, vs USA and friends) instead of bipolar view.

He defines "democracy" as a contrast to "autocracy"- definitely a shallow non-starter.

He sees it becoming active when there is a veto in the UN Security council. (There may be other examples, but the interview was too short to explore the matter).

Great programme Pierre Barron you are a shining example for a man of your years !

Thanks for your hard work at Newsnight and efforts to bring to our screens an unbiased, clear view of developments.
I noticed with some surprise in your most recent daily email alert (received a few minutes ago) that Newsnight is set to devote a sizeable section of the programme to John McCain – specifically, ‘setting out some detail of what his foreign policy might amount to’.
It seems unlikely you would not be aware of it, but nevertheless I would like to refer you to Robert Greenwald’s excellent and reputable www.bravenewfilms.org site, where you can immediately view a number of informative clips about McCain. These include video excerpts of McCain contradicting himself many times over on policy issues, and pledging solemn devotion to a person who claims the US was created in part to ‘destroy Islam’. It has been demonstrated elsewhere that McCain’s ‘green agenda’ amounts to nothing but green-wash. If you are indeed aware of this material and these facts, why is it that in a section of your programme that reviews McCain, you are not presenting them to the public? Would you not agree that failing to present these facts simply and directly serve to strengthen and support McCain’s spin?
It seems that failing to air such material would be in direct support of a person who is not worthy of the attention of the US, or world citizens.
