Nick Clegg and David Cameron have said they want to do more to stop tax avoidance by big companies.

The deputy PM told 大象传媒 Radio 4's Today programme he hoped there would be progress on an "anti-avoidance" tax rule in the Budget on 21 March, and the prime minister has also said a "tougher approach" is needed towards large firms with "fancy corporate lawyers".

Tonight Richard Watson reports on the avoidance tactics used by some companies and what can be done to block them.

Paul Mason takes a broad look at the state of the world economy and whether in the face of a double dip recession nations are likely to pull together or turn to protectionism, forcing a break down in global trade.

A decade after Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs described the rising economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China as the Bric economies, Justin Rowlatt has a report from Brazil on how the economy is faring now and the threats it faces. We will also be talking to Mr O'Neil afterwards.

And we look at the Diane Abbott Twitter race row. Liz MacKean reports on the reaction from politicians on both sides of the house, then we will debate whether what Ms Abbott said was racist or not, and whether an apology goes far enough, with Darcus Howe and Sunder Katwala.

All that with Emily at 10.30pm.

"Nick Clegg and David Cameron have said they want to do more to stop tax avoidance by big companies."

"want to do more" does not mean WILL do more. Just more empty rhetoric.

Remember, judge them by their behaviours not by their words. They have been in office now for nearly two years and have done diddly-squat on reigning in the City on bonuses and tax avoidance schemes (ref Barclays bank).

Jim's job at Goldmans (the vampire squid bank) is in a perilous state at the moment.

"How Jim O'Neill still has a job is beyond us. Not only is he the head of the worst performing vertical at Goldman Sachs, not only is he the creator of the Bloody Ridiculous Investment Concept (BRIC), but now this? Come on..."

I was hoping that Liam Fox would be on tonight's programme to discuss the hypocrisy & double standards that got him hounded out of office, as partly based on 'extreme prejudice' as not very ethical at all and/or on grounds of equality?

But I suppose that was OK - because he was 'white'?

Does head of REC understand the law & its application or is he just another stooge?

    All getting a bit stinkie!

'And we look at the Diane Abbott Twitter race row.'

From what angle, and how far will be 'interesting'.

As these things seem to matter, I though the 'row' was more about racism than race?

I see her son's school headmaster has weighed in, saying any accusations of racism are 'absurd'.

Now, I had thought (happy, very, to be set straight) that if anyone perceived a word or deed to be racist, that is what it became, and the full force of the race industry girded its loins and set off at a gallop.

At least maybe he can be asked to pop on and explain what makes it all absurd in this case, but not others?

VAST NUMBERS CONDEMNED TO SLOW DEATH - NOT NEWS?

In the final analysis, being unconcieved is Nirvana 鈥 a state of bliss.
Apart from Dave鈥檚 impending initiative: a chastity belt, to be worn like a tag, by potential bad mothers, governance is stumped. Most impregnation as carried out by amateurs, who seriously threaten the life they condemn to being, and the planet of its abandonment.

That the law should suddenly seize control, only at the end of life, whether by age, illness or both, is ABOUT AS PERVERSE A SITUATION AS ANY NIGHTMARE MIGHT CONSTRUCT.

As for Charlie Faulkner鈥檚 input (and that of his committee chums) I despair. He is concerned that someone might feel they are a burden, hence wish to die. Charlie seems to think this is wrong 鈥 has he never read Jesus? 鈥淕reater love hath no man鈥 Charlie. 鈥淚 am just going outside 鈥 I may be some time鈥.

All through life we are a 鈥榖urden鈥 to ourselves 鈥 often to others. Humans are high maintenance. We are not consulted at conception, it follows that WE HAVE, WITHOUT ANY GAINSAY, THE RIGHT TO END OUR LIVES. No caring society would force 鈥榩lummeting鈥, drowning, mangling etc, upon those who have made that choice. As is so often said: 鈥淵ou wouldn鈥檛 do it to a dog鈥 鈥 well, not LEGALLY.

Our MPs seem obsessed with the idea that the typical family wants to kill one of its members, for money or spite. I suggest this is a powerful comment on the sort of families we draw our lawmakers from 鈥 NOT THE SORT THAT YOU AND I BELONG TO. (Might this have some link to gratuitous slaughter of Johnnie Foreigner? Foxhunting? Displacement activity by murderous MPs?)

It鈥檚 not the first time Abbott鈥檚 stretched this particular envelope but on this occasion there can be little doubt that she鈥檚 gone too far.

And, by not insisting on her departure, Miliband has become part of the contradiction.

Racism is Racism, and the level of its abhorrence is not determined by the ethnicity of who happens to be practising it. By allowing this contradiction to perpetuate, Politicians (and the 大象传媒 alike) are more likely to agitate Racism amongst whites than they are to eradicate it.

    Who do you believe?

The international activities of large corporations generates all kinds of tax anomolies as is why some overseas subsidiaries are created in the first place i.e. e.g. as operating in low tax or no tax jurisdictions & then bringing profits back to UK headquarters' jurisdiction

Foreign subsidiary taxed on worldwide earnings as HQ'd in USA - Where is tax paid?

HMRC frequently having to deal with corporate tax double jeapordy issues - Perception is that generally multi-nationals win & UK tax payer losers?

A lot of issues here - but is all private between taxpayer & HMRC?

I think I've just been subject to racism by Darcus Howe. I certainly object to being swept up into whatever he thinks all 'whites' do or try to achieve. How can a man who has campaigned on this topic get it so wrong? A racist view is a racist view, irrespective of who said it. Abbott should be sacked, she has already got away with too many racist comments of her own and is arguably one of the biggest hypocrites in Government.

  • Comment number 26.

Interesting that studio guest 'Yes Men & Woman' (from Economist, GS & JR) would appear to have rejected the general proposition of Paul Mason that 'protectionism' will figure prominently in 2012?

That for me was the main issue of tonight's programme and IMO was very revealing as 'protectionism' is already a major issue in global economy & media & business will not address it for fear of upsetting 'vested interests' i.e. countries, corporate & tax deals.

Protectionism takes many forms & guises & corporate taxation policy is a major protectionist issue also - as 'tax dodging' issue is also a protectionist issue - as practised by GS and condoned by rotten 'The Economist' (Yes Men/Women) magazine.

BRIC countries have part command economies precisely to operate protectionism whether 'overt' as practised by nasty aggressive Russia or more 'covert' in the form of Chinese gaining control of precious metal & other global commodity market supply & pricing - very worrying indeed. Brasil & India have strong tariff protectionism also on certain imports/exports?

So where have these 'Yes Men/Women' stooges been for last few years to deny the existence of current rampant global protectionism - IMO, as rightly indicated by Paul Mason in as much as 'protectionism' is now in 2012 likely to feature more prominently take fresh turn with turmoil in Eurozone with Euro pricing risk.

Point being that discussion of existing protectionsim would have been a better starting point to put these so called experts on the spot & reveal their 'economic prejudice' & 'yes man activity'?

BTW on other issue - 'white bashing' - it was astonished to hear comments by those supporting you know who with her incitement of racial hatred - it is clear that some in whatever community they have - do not simply have a race equality agenda - if they've ever had one - they would appear to still see the 'whites' as there to attack and are prepared to build on the MP's racist statements. Their comments ensure that the 'Colonial comment crisis' has legs, IMO - disgraceful that some will still defend the bashing of 'whites' as saying this sort of thing also happens with 'whites' after e.g. major race relations story as is another slur - these appear to in support of racist comments aimed at bashing whites as would appear to be actionable under the existing law.

At what point does Equality Commission get involved here - if so called representatives of various sections of their communities now openly challenging the law on the incitement of racial hatred - position needs to be clarified here - what does chief of EC think - Is he up to the job?

Fot tax payers & licence payers will probably be disappointing that an MP & studio guests can challenge UK law openly on such an inflammatory subject as apparently having zero respect for position of UK silent majority - Time that some show some responsbility here?

I still think that a new UK law is required regarding public discussion of British colonial era in terms of it being used to incite racial hatred against Britain/British people?

  • Comment number 27.

Hey Newsnight, my mate Derek from down the pub says he wants to be on your programme, next time you talk about race relations. He's as thick as **!@*&, and a bit racist, says things as they are, you know. How's about it? You've just had that Darkus Howe on so Del will be exactly the kind of bloke you're looking for. YOU MASSIVE EEJITS.

  • Comment number 28.

The other issue is that the MP's racist 'colonial comments' have still not been subject to a full & unequivocal apology. We've only had a partial & very condescending apology, it would seem?

Another issue is that the MP's apparent racist comments would appear to be in full breach of the Ministerial Code - since if not a legal issue by themselves - these were not statements that would appear to be right and proper for an MP to make.

Question is when will justice be seen to be operating here and those breaking the law must surely now be held to account by those highly paid people in positions of responsibility?

Anyone? - How many offences of the aggravated racial prejudice type has EHRC prosecuted & how many against other than 'white British' ethnic grouping? (Very few, if any, the last time I looked into this)

According to EHRC the white ethnic grouping is by far the most racially prejudiced ethnic grouping in the UK to the point where its own statistical anomolies throw the entire EHRC organisation into absurdity.

The only logical conclusion is that the EHRC and its management are 'institutionally racist'?

Excellent Article by Bim Adewunmi in the Guardian:

"I've discussed the issue of viewing black people (and indeed other minority ethnic people) in the UK as one monolithic group on Twitter before. Here's how it goes: a) something deemed to be a "black issue" is on the news agenda; b) Without fail, "community leaders" and the now standard "ex-gang member" are wheeled out to be interviewed. Take yesterday's Newsnight, in which Jeremy Paxman introduced three guests, all invited into the studio to discuss the issues of police "stop-and-search" powers, the legacy that the Stephen Lawrence murder has left on the Metropolitan police and the general issue of a lack of trust in 鈥 sigh 鈥 the "black community". They were Cindy Butts from the Metropolitan Police Authority, Rod Jarman, a former acting deputy commissioner at the Met, and Madix, who in the words of Paxman is a "former gang member who served time in prison and now works with young gang members". While I'm sure Madix is a lovely man who enjoys nothing more than living his life within the boundaries of legality, it made my heart sink to see him on the telly. Why Madix? Why, for that matter, Dizzee Rascal following the election of Barack Obama in 2008?"

Very interesting to know that Newsnight own set of preverse prejudices inspired the exchange between Bim and Diane - way to go!

How'd the 'unselection/reselection' process work out, Newsynightie?

I'd hazard, not great. Darcus Howe was a disaster for the cause of moderate discourse. Or sanity, for that matter. Mr. Katawala was not bad, but when words such as activism get lobbed around, I worry when an un-context provided 'think tank' rep is put up as an 'expert'. And did he ever grab the 'storm in a teacup' and 'moving on' lifelines from Ms. Maitless. What. A. Stitch-up.

The factual matters of claimed 'context' or text length by Ms. Abbott were totally passed over, despite all online evidence and fisking all day long. Another selective edit memory hole inspired from behind the glass or on high? This is not news, it's pure news management.

This 'political A-lister' is the product of patronage from such as the 大象传媒 with, as described, 'her own show' (Messrs Neil and Portillo may feel they are playing more than supporting roles). You reap what you sow, guys.

It was also interesting to note in the footage that, the last time she was caught flying from a petard of her own hoisting, she tried, and was allowed to get all pompous about matters of the time that were 'surely more pressing'.

Now we have the Lawrence case being shoved in in the same way by too many, to try and distract from what Ms. Abbott, and only Ms. Abbott, set in motion herself. Getting from this to 'right wing reaction' to riots, etc in holding a politician to account for plain racist statements is risible.

Certainly the 'movingonism' mantra is well advanced and being obeyed.

Little was done to restore faith in establishment commitment to anything other than cowardly PC dogma and a belief that if you screw a lid down hard enough, no matter what the pressure, there will be no consequence.

    Good luck with that.

Such media (especially those wheeling out faithful green room lurkers like Sunny Hundal - @sunny_hundal Poor @mrharrycole - desperately flailing around after being called out for bringing law into Diane Abbott case -

We'll let the extra context (missing from Mr. Katwala's outfit 's introduction) of a 'right wing' government pass for now, but I would like an explanation of 'a country that threw its toys out of the pram'.

That is a view, certainly but not one held by all, and an odd one for an impartial British broadcaster to use about the actions of a British Government and PM in handling its interests internationally.

Please explain the thinking and ability to so express using the airwaves to 60M fellow Britons, some of which may not agree with such analysis. Without context, 'time was short', 'no space' weasels, etc. For once.

Perhaps you know who will continue to be the 'gaffer' on 'equality' issues - as is now in the wrong job in shadow cabinet?

What I want to know is who are these wicked 'whites' who divide & conquer? I have never know anyone to do this divide & conquer thing or are/were they just perhaps e.g. Scottish or something? What is alleged to have happened in old British Empire is a bit before my time as empire mostly stirred & given back by Labour govts by the time I knew historical details & therefore immensely offensive and repeatedly & obsessively used by those with a 'white bashing' agenda - Makes me wonder why any of them would want to live in the UK if some think this of UK now?

It is a sweeping generalisation that is as ignorant & offensive for its content as it is for its clear, unequivocal context & target?

What proportion of 'whites' have ever divided & conquered? A minute fraction of a fraction of a % of UK population over any time period - What is also really shocking about Abbot-Gate is its from someone who was a runner for leader of the UK govt opposition party.

Only sure outcome is that many now switching on & now recognising those associated with the conspiracist, gravy train 'white bashing' agenda?

    Abbot-Gate still 'has legs'?

"DIVIDE TO RULE" IN THE AGE OF PERVERSITY (#49)

As I have pointed out before: ONLY the much vaunted Westminster Adversarial Model is so PERVERSE as to DIVIDE ITSELF, AGAINST ITSELF, 'the better to govern'! What other enterprise sets its management team against itself, as a means to better management? Efficiency, excellence, ELEGANCE, comes from minimising LOST MOTION; whether it be machine, man or management. A damnable institution only draws to itself the damnable 鈥 and we are damned.

Westminster is an object lesson in PERVERSE, NIHILISTIC NON-GOVERNANCE. It is NOT democracy under the law, NOR INDEED is it the best of a bad bunch; as many choose to say Churchill said. It is a pernicious, self-serving disgrace.

But what he doesn't yet know is, that using a Conservative Liar Flyer to advance HIS PERSONAL CAREER (vis: touting for votes) does not alter the fact that he, AS A PRIVATE CITIZEN (between Parliaments) proxy-put a load of lies, about imaginary election outcomes, through my door, to enhance HIS employment prospects. This is called 'deception' and is, 'allegedly' (for Blogdog) unlawful.

Other 'gates' are available. I have not yet begun to fight.

Barrie, as one gate closes, another creaks on its hinges....

Apparently. Guesses on tonight's packed schedule.

The way things are going, I think a full programme special on Simon Cowell's contribution to music. 'Critics are saying..' or not.

    IRONY GATE?

Do you think - Harry Potter style - we might bring down Westminster BY FORCE OF IRONY? Westminster is SUCH a farcicle pile of delusion!

If we called for a MILLION-MAN JEER, in the Westminster environs, do you think it might fall to powder (9/11) out of utter embarrassment?

    Make it so.

O for a 25% pay rise (not bonuses) and with such low levels of taxation too.

When NN finds time between flogging the AGW and statist agendas , maybe they would like to compare the UK's business model with these economies around the world (not just with those economic sucesses of the EU ) ?

    Disclaimer:

As I have not worked out these figures myself , I can not 100% vouch for them , so I can only assume them to be ballpark figures.
