"You can continue to comment on Newsnight using the social media websites Facebook and Twitter."

I pay my license fee to pay your wages, not those of Facebook or Twitter staffers, but hey, that's what eroding democracy is all about.

(did the above exceed 140 characters?)

  • Comment number 2.

I ALWAYS FELT BROADCASTING ITSELF WAS THE RAISON D'ETRE OF 大象传媒 ANYWAY.

Just a pity they degraded output to the level of Hello and OK while diverting money into blogging.

I don't face or twit but can be easily found. Cheers.

  • Comment number 3.

Is this the old man Newsnight pretending to be cool and with the kids?

  • Comment number 4.

    2.

disregarding the cost moderation, the monies 'diverted' into maintaining the blogs will be negligible because (i) the IT infrastructure already exists and (ii) the additional storage required too is negligible (given the requirements to store video and audio). I reckon that the 大象传媒 would rather not know, nor broadcast, what ordinary license fee payers think.

  • Comment number 5.

    EVERY LITTLE HELPS (#4)

I just felt that, against a backdrop of cuts and more cuts, the blog should have been dropped long ago. In passing: I bet they are paying way over the rate for IT and moderation. The proof is in the regular crash of the IT (also pointless tinkering) and the crass moderation with the "all things to all men" rules and notifications that leave one no wiser.

Now I can't help wondering if the 大象传媒 is to be sold off.

@1 TV_As_Eyes yes and now when you post something that shows up Newsnight expect to be disappeared down The Memory Hole AKA censored by Twitter and have your details handed over to the authorities without a warrant.

@3 Kit Green so is NN the new Gary Glitter?

    Before it's too late ....

    Saving Newsnight 鈥.

The Plan 鈥. Update, with additions.

    1. Come down from the Ivory Tower!

    2. Scrap 鈥楶C鈥 and introduce 鈥楥P鈥 鈥. i.e 鈥淐hallenge the Politicians!鈥

    3. Put the following inspirational posters around all the NN office walls (which read) 鈥.

鈥淲hat are they trying to hide? And why?鈥

    鈥淜eep calm & dig deep!鈥

    鈥淲ho cares? 鈥. I care!鈥

    4. Remember your past! i.e. The 鈥楬oward鈥 interview is revered, and referenced, to this day!

    5. Encourage, involve and embrace your 鈥榗ustomer鈥 base AKA the 鈥榁iewer鈥!

    6. Question - vigorously - the use of certain - distracting, devious, dishonest - words by Interviewees, guests etc. i.e. 鈥渕any鈥, 鈥榗onsulting鈥, 鈥榝airness鈥.

    7. Journalistically speaking 鈥. Always attempt to 鈥. Shoot the messenger!

    8. Avoid the beaten track. Don鈥檛 be star-struck by 鈥榗elebrity鈥! And avoid repetition!

    9. Drop the cowardice! i.e. 鈥 鈥. but the images are too distressing to broadcast!鈥

    10. Represent the 鈥榮tate - and status - of the people鈥! The acronym 鈥槾笙蟠解 must never again be judged as a misnomer!

    And 鈥. Most importantly 鈥..

    12. Follow the money!

There鈥檚 plenty more on offer 鈥.

"NO SENSE OF SHAME - NO SENSE OF GUILT" (David Lammy)

Lammy did not notice he was describing Westminster's Mendacious Puppets when he used those words against rioters. Then the Tory good guy asserted the problem is cultural, but failed to add that Westminster, over decades, has DEGRADED OUR CULTURE - PARTICULARLY MOTHERING.

Isn't it Paxman's job (or his earpiece) to know this stuff - and raise it?

    #4 - you have a point!

    Ave et Vale!

The good thing about the old-style blog was that it as possible to engage with good journalists like Paul Mason, who regularly responded to comments. I always felt that the Beeb ignored bloggers on this one, even when very valid points were made, eg Paxo's penchant for being rude and sarcastic instead of incisive. In a sense this blog was a hole in the ground into which we could pour our frustrations before they were buried.

But ... "King Midas has an ass's ears"

  • Comment number 12.

'Bye all, it was nice knowing you! : D

NN can Face and Twitter off, who want's a yank system controlling our words.

  • Comment number 13.

    To the 大象传媒 managers:

    Finally, the day has come.
    Undoubtedly we expected it.
Could we really care any more?
Killing this blog brings down the curtain on the 大象传媒's open blogging experiment.

Other media blogs, for example the NYT, are much more robust
Fear not Barrie et al, there's a brave new world out there.
Farewell blogdog, I hope you find a better paid and more fulfilling job!

  • Comment number 14.

Hail and farewell, dear friends, and thanks for the memory.

  • Comment number 15.

And just like that ! It was gone.

The archives will gather dust for a while and then they too will be disappeared, like they never existed in the first place.

This is a really poor policy decision 大象传媒, murdoch and his ilk really have taken over haven't they.

  • Comment number 16.

Well, that's it then. Is it? It's a Goodnight from me........... and it's a goodbye from him (and her and him and her and a few occasional too). The patient has been ailing (and failing) for some time and has now boarded the plane for a Swiss clinic.

The plumage isn鈥檛 beautiful - it's rank and putrid; it has ceased to rest or pine for anything, the nails that were keeping it in situ have rusted and crumbled to a deeply disturbing pile of rust 鈥 there has been no danger of it muscling up or 鈥榲ooming鈥 off anywhere in years. This blog has passed on. It IS no more. It has ceased to be, expired and gone to meet its maker (who probably disowned it years ago). It is a late, very stiff blog, bereft of any notable life. May it R.I.P. (Gawd, how I hate the trotting out of that hackneyed piece of Victoriana).

Daisies will grow where it fell (well maybe not in the south east with its lack of water). The curtain is down, the invisible choir has sung its last chorus of 鈥楽o long, farewell, auf wiedersen, Goodbye鈥. The harsh final note will fade from our memories like the chintzy covered sofa when the parlour curtains are left open.

A replacement you say. But you have no more blogs in stock! What about a MyFace or a Twatter? Er, no thanks 鈥 it doesn鈥檛 match my decor. Can I have my money back, please sir.... please sir?

It's been fun (occasionally) and informative (sometimes) reading you all. I鈥檓 off to get a licence for my pet halibut! Oh yes.......... and a LIFE!

NEWSYNIGHTY CERTAINLY "STOOD NOT UPON THE ORDER OF ITS GOING"!

But why? Coyness - shame - ineptitude - slight - edginess? Hardly "Flagship" stuff is it!

    Was it me?

  • Comment number 18.

Due to changes at the Newsnight website this blog is no longer being updated.

Given that this is obviously a 'planned withdrawal' rather than an 'immediate cessation' of hostilities, I wonder how long NN will pay troops (oops, I meant moderators) to pre moderate this long since defunct Blog?

    Shall we open a book?

  • Comment number 19.

SHALL WE OPEN A BOOK? (#18)

Might that book be a syntax primer for NewsyNighty BYT? I think the flagship is going down - probably by the 'stern', in and of itself, 'due to' a sea change in the website-space, going forward this hour.

    Nuff sed

  • Comment number 20.

My last attempt to post something meaningful for consideration:

"Bottlenose dolphins: 'Gangs' run society, scientists say."

    /nature/17522450

The choice of the word "gang" is of course emotionally loaded. The words "tribe" or "alliance" might be more neutral*. After all, the behaviour reported, whilst not in keeping with modern mores, is well known in human history: from the rape of the Sabine women by the "new" tribe of Romans, to the bride stealing practices around the Black Sea and elsewhere.

Many, if not most, words are emotionally loaded. For example "responsibility" as in "fiscal responsibility". One person's responsibility is another's recklessness. It depends upon whose side you are on. I hope the Newsnight team will always consider whose side they might appear to be on when planning their programmes!

*we'll keep "political party" out of this one! ;-D

"FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND FACEBOOK"

Will the 大象传媒 be flogged-off on Ebay?

  • Comment number 25.

I don't know about tweeting, but I feel that we need some nice and appropriate music as the final curtain descends:

And FaceBook. That would be the US-based, commercial, sources say over confirmed facts twitter and FaceBook, then?

I have been doing battle on this here already:

    /blogs/theeditors/2012/03/a_new_feature_on_the_bbc_news.html >

    /blogs/bbcinternet/2012/03/bbc_news_facebook_app.html

Ironically, I just got one erased post reinstated as they kinda had to accept it was on topic, despite several rounds claiming it was not. Currently, doubtless for faster, easier and better reasons, there are none. At all. Maybe they are all over on FaceBook?

Now I notice this has joined the 'we get it about right' fray...

    /blogs/theeditors/2012/03/a_new_way_to_access_bbc_news_on_your_mobile.html

I also have an exchange going with the 大象传媒 ECU on 'there was not enough space on twitter or mobiles to fit accurate headlines'. It is not going well.

    Unique.

At least they are free, which begs the question what the 拢145.50 pa is for, as this is about the only 大象传媒 bit I use.

First they referred me, and I kept on speaking.
Then they House ruled me, and I kept on speaking.
And then they closed for comments and I kept on speaking.
But then they simply closed, period, and there was one less place to speak.

The historical precedent is.. not great.

大象传媒. You really think that shutting down outlets for exchange in getting back to broadcast only of approved editorial is going to look or actually be greeted well by any already concerned at the erosion of free speech?

    '10. At 23:11 27th Mar 2012, museV'

You too. We may not have always agreed, and I'd have wished my actual nickname might have eventually sunk in, but the spirit of debate and debate in spirit has been dealt a blow here by a propagandist, censorship-obsessed, market-rate talent collection of bottom-line box-tickers. Weep Britain.

And finally, in other news: 'follow us Twitter and Facebook'

As you failed to ask nicely, and in any case I share journeys rather than be anyone's 'follower', especially any such as you wish me to be, I respectfully decline. In any case...

'where we post the best bits of the programme'

Nah.. use twitter. Way you've managed things, it'll need a lot less than even 140 charac...

  • Comment number 28.

Oh... one last freebie for the new, improved, Twitter 'news' generation:

'This blog is now closed - follow us Twitter and Facebook'

That isn't actually a coherent sentence. Not that you care.

    FYI

  • Comment number 29.

#26 Ah Barrie, the Cuckoo, a very apt choice, it is rapidly dying out, probably be gone in the next twenty years here, so a good choice of representative.

  • Comment number 30.

A WELL CRAFTED RESPONSE LIZZY! (#29)

The Cuckoo it is then - I think we got it about right.

Junkk (#27) The 拢145.50 mostly goes on maddening musack, backing continuity ADVERTISING on radio. At times, my so-so hearing just can't extract the signal from the noise. But radio is free (just like the NHS) of course, so I can't complain. Come to think of it - I often can't understand the 'NHS' either. Might there be a link?

Oh to be in England, now that sound and fury's there. (#23)

"AND THEIR PETTY GAMES ARE ROUNDED WITH THE PIPS." (Never mind the chaotic presentation that leads up - speak the last syllable one nano-second before the pips, AND YOU ARE A BROADCASTING LEGEND - apparently.)

  • Comment number 31.

I swore I would leave the party, but one more tune by way of a coup d'escalier:
"Beware of the Bull" - amongst the best and funniest of songs by the late great and much lamented Jake Thackray, (from a 大象传媒4 retrospective).

  • Comment number 32.

I'm feeling like a 60's rock band on its nth farewell tour, but this amused...

"The biggest challenge has been finding news of this election on the 大象传媒. I guess the wrong party won."

One of the higher rated comments on an online news story... the kind one will be seeking out more and more elsewhere, for obvious reasons.

As to the election in question, well, one could try the information and education resources only 拢4Bpa can 'buy', but only if they decide it's what you need to know. (Stop Press: typing the State and Country in the search function doesn't help).

And, self-evidently, they are closing even the few little outlets that still exist to have such things shared even from elsewhere.

I usually like bubbles. But only when observing them from the outside.

  • Comment number 33.

This seems rele... not OT, considering all going on (and off)...

    /news/magazine-17530450

'Lawyers say there are lots of pieces of UK legislation that can be used to prosecute someone who has fallen foul of the law in the online arena.'

Lawyers, eh? Lucky they are not the only ones near exclusively running things.

There seems an awful lot more one can't say.

Maybe, that was the whole point?

  • Comment number 34.

Is it lawful to run a steam car by burning postage stamps?

Why are children not taught these things in school?

Getting the chop is the new NewsNight zeitgeist.

Not only is this blog about to be exterminated but three NewsNight journalists are also going to be 'moving on', according to The Times today, as part of 'cost-savings' measures.

Whatever, we are all due for the chop sooner or later, it is merely a matter of time.

I will now be found on where today I have attempted to unravel the strange case of Paxman, HMRC and the Personal Service Company, which have all featured in The Times letters pages recently.

Of course, fellow bloggers, we must finish with something profound so here goes :

"Form follows function but both report to emotion - Willie G. Davidson".

Not just Newsnight. And not just staff.

I have cited a few 大象传媒 URLS above that discuss the move to mobile and the tie-in with twitter and FaceBook.

I have left comments, citing in some cases this thread, and its contracted headline in concern for inaccuracy to fit.

All, so far, have no been modded out by the 'off topic' House rule.

This I have in each case appealed, and will take as far as it gets.

Sloppy is one thing. Propaganda is another. Blatant censorship beyond the pale.

  • Comment number 38.

#37 Ah Junkk looking at the way the government and media are behaving, i.e. silencing the people, rather leads to me to believe they are very afraid, look at the mess financially and socially this country is in, mob rule around the corner?!
