Andy Street of John Lewis on Newsnight

Michael Crick | 16:01 UK time, Wednesday, 11 August 2010

On Newsnight last night, Emily Maitlis asked Andy Street, the managing director of , how much he was paid. Street said he wasn't going to announce the figure "on national TV", but also pointed out that it is freely available "in the public domain".

So I can reveal that Mr Street is paid £500,000 a year, and got a 15 per cent bonus last year.

So in his case the John Lewis List will be to whateever side he keeps his wallet.

    Never knowingly undersold.............

Hmmm...£500,000 a year...isn't that about half of what Jeremy Paxman "earns" at the ´óÏó´«Ã½?

Now which of them is worth it?

And the same bonus as everyone else who works for John Lewis Partnership.

he's dead wrong about the cutbacks though, Brown will be proved right about cutting back to early....the growth isn't there and confidence is dropping like a stone and if John Lewis is going to whether the storm they will need a fiscal stimulation rather than the heavy hand and deadweight of austerity to get us through....Andy, you are well off the mark and I will be proved right...

The alternative to the cutbacks is a sterling crisis followed be even more inflation and unemployment.

There is no real economic growth out there other than loads of cheap cash from QE and the defecit sloshing around looking to prop up an asset bubble or two.

Either way this country is stuffed thanks to Brown and others. The issue for JLP and others is how to survive the ongoing catastrophe known as the UK economy: there will be good moments, bad times and rough patches. You organise your business as best you can to meet the challenges ahead.

John Lewis , a real partnership!

If executive salaries were regulated by law so that the highest could only earn 20 times the lowest would it stop ambitious people climbing the greasy pole to the top? Nah.
