The world after 9/11

Post categories:

William Crawley | 17:41 UK time, Saturday, 9 September 2006

On Monday, the busiest city in the world will come to a standstill, millions of people will stand silently in respect and remembrance, and church bells will toll to mark the moment when the attacks began -- attacks that have changed the world in ways we are still trying to understand. I'll be marking the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks tomorrow with Peter Grant, who joins us live from Ground Zero (yes, live: it really is the city that never sleeps), and examining the global implication of September 11th with two former foreign policy advisors to Tony Blair: George Joffe and Paul Rogers. I'd be interested in your views on how 9/11 changed everything; and your sense of the distinctive challanges facing the post-9/11 world.

Nothing has changed - because America has learned nothing from 9/11. Look at the pointless war in Iraq (yep, it's still going on). Look at the recent attacks on london and the even more recent foiled attacks. When will America learn that you don't beat these guys by behaving like them?

If I'd been american president after the 9/11 attack, I would have certainly invaded Afghanistan. They supported the terrorists. What president wouldn't have HAD to do that if you country is attacked. Bush did the right thing.

Having just watched the channel 4 prog 'Fundamentalists' (Christian, Muslim and even Hindu )I am even more convinced in my Atheism and Humanism.
The Cold War has faded and I think we are now faced with a war of religious fundamentalism and nationalism versus the forces of rationalism and science which have undoubtably saved humanity, certainly in the First World, from the despair of famines and most of the diseases which plagued our ancestors just a few decades ago!! - Fundamentalists deride science but let them think of the awful lives of their predecessors and give credit to the same science which now supports evolution etc - and continues to work mainly for the betterment of humanity!

Is there perhaps a slight technical problem with the comments link at the end of William's entry indicating zero comments - although there are already three as I write this?

I still remember how fellow employee at the hospital where I worked in ][Miami Florida] told me about the WTC [11-IX-2001]. I did not believe him until I saw the TV. I called my wife and my wife went to pick up our daughter from school.

According to my wife, all children's parents went to pick them up.

Back at the hospital, I udes my computer and telephone to reestablish contact with friends and family members from New York that I have not seen in a long time.

During the night, I heard`news via the internet and short wave radio. It was a radio station from West Virginia where the public appaluded the Republican and Democratic Politicians for the desire to "flush the US Constitution down the toilet" while the Libertarian Politician received acts of repudiation [in the form of boos] from the public when he suggested defending the US Constitution

Patsy- I don't have the energy at the moment to give you a full catalog of the reasons you're wrong.

Suffice for now to say (a) many of those involved in 9/11 are now behind bars or dead thanks to the war on terror, (b) the war in Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 as those on the Left are keen to point out, (c) there hasn't been another attack on American soil since 9/11 which seems to contradict both major thrusts of your entire theory, (d) the reason the recent air attacks were foiled is also thanks to the war on terror, (e) the war in Iraq was not being fought at the time of 9/11, yet the attack STILL OCCURRED, and (f) thank God YOU aren't in charge.

What have we learned? That there are people who want to kill us, and that we will do what we must to ensure that they won't succeed.
