So we're told. But the studio lights have just gone out again...

This reminds me of another extraordinary election night - when Ken Livingstone .

My job was to fill the long hours of the night whilst David Dimbleby had a few well-deserved hours sleep. The problem that night was the new automated counting machines failed - so I had to broadcast for 4 hours with no results at all.

And you're back! Glad I didn't just go off to bed...

What a disappointing night to be a Liberal Democrat supporter - we could and should have done much better than it appears we have. "Liberal Britain" needs a good kick up the backside!

Is Jim Fitzpatrick one of the bullies or one of the bullied in the Department of the Deputy Prime Minister. Will he still be there in a couple of hours time?

Morning Nick

Amazing result here in Barnsley - The Conservatives have polled 725 votes in the North East ward which includes Grimethorpe where the miners strike started in 1984 (The film Brassed Off was filmed there).

This is double the vote in 2002.

Oh well back to the boring commentators. "Blah blah we're up not down 75 like you were saying we'd be". "We're still the best alternative to labour". Blah blah...

All good things come to an end. Can we go back to the frenetic (and "live" - or at least alive :-) excitement of the pub, scrawled notes, stage whispers!

Watching things unfold from across the atlantic in Canada one might look at how the Liberal party fell apart here. There was a change of leadership after declining polls and then the party was booted out of power. With the a new leader carrying the can for past errors. Could be interesting politics in the UK in the next year or so. keep on blogging til the end of the night it is good stuff.

Is Jeremy Vine wearing that shirt for a bet? He is overdoing the Peter Snow shtick a bit..

These current politicos are a bit drab. Glamour is a sadly neglected art among mps these days.

You got a good close-up just now Nick, grinning widely when Dimbo pulled Ed Davey up on their non-momentum!

There were Powercuts in Glasgow last night too. Thunderstorms aplenty on an election night. :)
