1-Internet backbone is based on Fiber optics and not Satellite communication:
a) Bandwidth: The required bandwidth for providing broadband internet to numerous customers is affordable only through fiber optics. Experiments show that data with rates up to 1000Gbit/s can be transmitted through a single fiber. Rate of transmission for satellites can not get even close to this number (normally a few hundred Mbit/s).
b) Delay: Delay in fiber optic is only a fraction of the delay for satellite service, and is more appropriate for real-time tasks. The delay is related to how far a signal should travel to reach to its destination and for satellites that are located in orbits (30,000km above earth) is much longer than fibers that are on Earth’s surface.
c) Cost: Based on the huge bandwidth of fiber optics the cost per bit for fiber optics is lower than the other option.
This is why continents are connected through transoceanic links. If US acts as a global internet hub, this is because it is highly interconnected with other continents.
2- Theoretically, Iran could have been a regional internet hub at least among its neighbors if there were fiber links between them. This potential position suffers from the level of trades and friendly relationships among these countries.
3- If broadband links were available, Middle East could provide a link between far East and Europe. It cold be less expensive compared to buried fibers in sea. Arguably, it could be called a modern Silk Road.
