I've just heard the start of a package you'll hear on the programme tonight, about the public tributes to Steve Irwin.

I think you'll like it.

He should have slapped on the sun-cream. Protects from harmful rays!

    Hee hee hee.

I know that I'm not the only one who found the man a condescending idiot. So why the mass hagiography now that he's carked it?

I’m waiting for a package to be delivered. Is that the one you mean?

I got really excited when I saw the title of this blog - but its not about me after all.

Firstly can I say that I recognise what he has done for Conservation in Australia. However (could you ever see that coming) his style owes more to the Jackass Generation that to the wildlife presenters of old.

I think back to the great "Life on Earth" series, where David Attenborough joined the Silverback Gorilla. I rather fear that if Steve Irwin had filmed that episode, we would have seen the male rearing to protect his territory, and never seen the gentle side of these wonderful creatures.

Thanks, Eddie. I didn't know the man, but if you like it, I'll like it.
P.S. Don't let the B*s get you down!

Can I turn to the subject of photos on this 'ere blog?

There's a photo of Rupert PM's Commissioning Editor. There is Peter Rippon (he of Morecambe & Wise fame) it says, he's editor of PM and something called BH. And there's a photo of Roger who's pictured sat sitting just editing PM.

Er.. just how many editors do you need Ed?

I can see that this afternoon is going to be totally lost trying to keep track of the numerous blogs that Mr Ed is going to post today. I think he's trying to achieve a personal best every day....

Look, give the man a break! On the one hand, Ed's being egged (or is that edded?) on to do more n more blogs, and on the other, he's being got at for having other eds. Compared to TB, his support network is frugal - more GB than TB, in fact, like the true Scot he is. Enough!

    Steve Irwin?
ok, he may not have been to the taste of all (any??) PM bloggers, but c'mon. He got people interested in conserving rather than killing wildlife! ... without him, they'd probably still be shooting Roos.

Actually, maybe he didn't change attitudes too much as there seems to have been a spate of stingray killing recently (with someone cutting the stingers off and leaving them on the beaches)

ah well, I'm sure all this and more will be in the piece...

If you Google 'Irwin Steve dead' it takes you right to Ebay. Saying "Buy Stve Irwin dead". Not nice is it?

He catches the InterCity to Paddington. Takes a waiting taxi to the West End. Enters recording studio. Sits at microphone. Watches film. Waits until donkey turns.

The man says "Thistles". Gets up, shakes hands all round. Takes taxi to Paddington. Takes InterCity to country station. Gets in car and drives home.

That was how Johnny Morris, who died aged 82, described his work - in this instance, lip-synching a donkey for a television commercial.

When Radio 4 asked him to take part in a version of The Ladykillers in 1996, he said: " I fancied the Alex Guninness role, but they wanted me for the parrot".

Johnny Morris entertained millions of people for more than 40 years with his love of animals and his storytelling skills. He mixed tips on animal care with information on wildlife and zoos. There was no artifice with Johnny Morris. He was the real thing. He was simply Animal Magic.

I bet you can't really buy him - dead or alive. I can't be bothered to go to EBay to complain though, can you?

Oooh, I just got the "you're so fast it's offensive" message again.

Funny, I had just read this, and thought that the phrase "you'll hear on the programme tonight" was a bit of a hostage to fortune, when I turned on the radio ("Listen Live" crashes IE on my computer) to hear Eddie announcing that events in Thailand make it unlikely that such items will make it to the programme.

I used to get the heebie-jeebies watching Steve Irwin Esq (or whatever the Oz version of Esq is)... those poor animals were scared half to death most of the time.

Still, I suppose he has heightened awareness of conservation in the minds of youngsters which is no bad thing, hopefully.

    Good ole Johnny Morris!!

    re 21

I've just had a revelation! I thought it was "that Australian bloke whose programmes I never watch" who'd died - but the bloke I was thinking of was Ray Mears! I only realised this by reading your post David!

It means I really have absolutely no idea who Steve Irwin was.

Is it unkind to say that, for the most part, I don't care?

Did I miss the tributes to Irwin on PM or haven't they been done yet?
