Competition!

Eddie Mair | 14:19 UK time, Wednesday, 25 October 2006

The newsletter sent this morning has still not arrived. When do you think it will arrive in my inbox? Whoever gets closest to the exact date, time and year will win a printed off copy of the newsletter signed by me! Yes. That's right.

In the meantime, let me alert you to our programme tonight. We're looking at face transplants - just recorded an int with the man who'll lead the team doing the world's first full transplant. Also, we are checking right now whether we'll be able to bring you clips of what Madonna told Oprah about Dave.

I've spoken to the head of that July 7th charity which has wound itself down having done its job rather well by all accounts. What did he get right that some other charities and relief funds didn't?

Also: would you welcome a nuclear dump under your house if it meant getting a new community centre? And Sir Patrick Moore looks ahead 100 years. That's one helluva monocle.

So come on - let me have your guesses. When WILL the PM newsletter sent today arrive in my inbox?

Great quiz. I have faith in those ´óÏó´«Ã½ computer whizz kids and reckon your lovely Wednesday newsletter will be popping itself into my inbox at 14:51 today.

Glad to see the Lord Mayor 'seeds' his own email address into the newsletter list.

How else can he be sure our comments aren't just an elaborate wind-up? ;o)

Seriously... I have a hazardous waste landfill site (or 'toxic dump' as we affectionately know it round here) in the next village.

We've had bad experiences with the original operators but things are turning around now it's been sold to a company that knows what it's doing.

One thing we tend to say locally when trying to look on the bright side is ... 'at least there's no nuclear waste in there'

Of course there IS a nuclear arms dump in the area, which we all know about, but that's different.

I can't help but point out that today's newsletter (arrived in my inbox at 16.29, by the way, well done) has got its prediction timings all wrong.

For example, Madonna will be 58 in under ten years' time. I cannot imagine science be able to freeze people and bring them back to life in that short space of time. Not even Oprah. And considering that speed the EU works at, I really cannot see the enlargement programme extending to 250 countries in that time. Not even if Peter Mandelson is in sole charge by then.

Arctic Monkeys the Musical is a strong possibility, though, I grant you.

I'm going for the less optimistic than some: 01:01 Friday morning. At Eddie's inbox, that is. (Will he be sitting up all night, waiting?)

Some bizarre article in New Scientist this week that stated that it might be possible to speed up the radioactive decay by many orders of magnitude, thereby making it safe much sooner. Even claimed to have some evidence...

But methinks even if that's true, it's far too impractical still, since whatever's good to speed up the first radioactive decay is unlikely to be good for the next one down the chain - and they are very long chains when it comes to the fuel rods themselves.

While it's geologically fairly stable, under the House of Commons not practical, as it'll be under water in 50 years, what with global warming and SE England sinking.
