Newsletter
In the absence of a newsletter (see previous postings) here's a quick flavour of the programme tonight, as it looks at 14.00. We expect a result in the employment tribunal case of Aishah Azmi, who was suspended from her job as a teaching assistant for refusing to remove her full veil in the classroom.
Also: a stay of execution for the Leeds man on death row in Pakistan - we'll talk to his brother. We'll look at what the spooks think of the terror threat to Britain, and we may talk to the Bishop who's started an ad campaign against children dressing up as spooks. Oh the wordplay. Oh the agony. Oh the Deadwood Stage (finish this yourself)
This is getting very strange. Not only does the newsletter get jammed somewhere, but we get error messages when we go to make a comment
What is happening up there? Not a question for you, Eddie - we don't blame you at all, and are grateful for all the trouble you go to on our humble behalfs.
On a lighter note, is it our blogging that's making for wordplay? We'd like to think we help a bit.
LOL x
Ah ha.
Someone deliberately fouled up the coding in the hope of a bit of peace and quiet?
If I can struggle round it, the others won't have any difficulty.
OK, so it's fixed now.
Anyone care for a portion of this egg on my face?
Why Mr. Mair, with these puns you're spoiling us!
A flippant though: would Aishah Azmi's theme song be "I only have eyes for you"?
re HTML TAGS
I've been speaking to Richard, the new blog wizard, and he's very kindly provided me with a list of tags to jazz up your comments. He says that, "it looks like the default set of tags is enabled"...I hope this means they will work. Treat yourselves and have a go.
Where I've put { } you should put the html arrows:
{a href} for links
{b} or {strong} to make bold
{i} or {em} to italicise
{br/} for a line break
{p} for a new paragraph
{ul} to underline
{ol} and {li} for lists
{blockquote} to indent and separate quoted text
Example:
I'm really enjoying reading the {b}PM blog{/b} at the moment; it's {i}very{/i} amusing.
comes out as
I'm really enjoying reading the PM blog at the moment; it's very amusing.
Does this make any sense?
Lissa
PS apologies for the earlier problems with posting comments...yet again "the queue" was to blame.
Hi guys,
Seems a bit quite out there at the moment, so thought I'd ask for a bit of help.
Are any of you familiar with the little download of a guy trapped behind the screen of your PC and who taps mournfully, trying to get out? Appealing for help? Perhaps it's a new one on you, but it was certainly around a couple of years ago and used to crease me up when I was feeling down.
So, the favour: If you do know the link I mean, and have access to it, and assuming it hasn't be found guilty of any misconduct, perhaps you could share it with us - I think it might help Eddie at the moment, too.
After all, if it's trapped in there, it might as well help Eddie to sort out the Newsletter bloggage, don't you think?
Spooks? Isn't a bit early for hallowe'en?
Chris Evan's newsletter works o.k. - Mine arrived at lunchtime.
Thanks Chris.
I seem to have an increasing number of my posts disappear into the depths of the Borg Queue.
Between that and the possibility that this blog might disappear again at any moment like Brigadoon (Blogadoon?), I think I can say whatever I like in this post and no-one will ever see it. So...
Whipcrackaway, whipcrackaway whipcrackawaaaaaayyyyy!
Lissa (5)
Tell me that again?
Okay, Lissa, that's great - except your own entry shows that the bold bit just doesn't.
So, while it makes sense, it doesn't add up (ha ha)
Umm Lissa? It looks like the bold still isn't behaving itself, even for you... Mind you I haven't tried strong as a tag. Time for a little test, I think:
bolded text, maybe?
italics, bold, underlined?
Lissa,
And you only have to look at yesterday's blog to see what fun can be done with some of the other tags!
Now was that example sentence an example, or a heartfelt expression?
Eddie,
No newsletter yet again. Oh dear!
What were you doing with your computer at the time the problem occured?
Do you have any independent witnesses of the problem?
'Ledge, I don't know the one you mean, but you might like the video on site to cheer you up as well :o)
Lissa (6)
As you can see <b> is one of the tags that does not work.
I have to be honest thought I can't see anything in the css that redefines it!
Mad ravings from BH
Andy Cragg and Anne: Is this Blog Entry 100?
Fearless Don Keys: We have a new Newsletter, No Newsletter.... a postcard .....An email arrives ......Perhaps I misunderstood the pictures from Heathrow Airport........
If anyone ............
"It would really help if Lissa was in the office today." (where did I hear that one before?)
Does anybody else get the feeling that the blogmaster is a bit slow today? Is Eddie doing everything? Poor lad.
Do go and get him a cup of tea, quick, he's on air in 50 minutes.
Its happened again 鈥 you sent the email at 9.45 and it arrived with me at 16.14. I think you need to put an old fashioned rocket up your high tec techie鈥檚 proverbials.
Sop
Substitute the word strong for the word bold between your brackets.
What is the problem with bold?
It seems to work OK for me (and others, obviously). But underline has never worked on this frog.
I think Lissa means where she has etched a squiggle like { and }, in order to become an html wizard, you need to use a < and a >
And you may get bold and italics. But I never get bold.
An email timed at 9.57 arrived at 16.23 this afternoon. Sadly there's no sign of today's newsletter, which I look forward to for relieving a dull afternoon in the office.
I rather like getting the newsletter the next mornign when I arrive for work. Forces me to try and remember what was on the program and whether it bore any resemblance!
Good grief! At 16.25 I receive Eddie's abject apologies emailed this morning at 9.57. What is going on down at the Beeb? I am not resting at all assured. Anything but.
The Church should stick with their own beliefs.Hallowe'en came about to replace the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, the last day of the Celtic year. This is when the Festival of the Dead took place.
I saw on the 大象传媒 News Web page that parents are no longer reading their chidren bed time stories. I suggest they read them this blog page. Educational and entertaining.
Your email from 9:47 has literally just dropped into my inbox at 16:48 - a whole 4 hours and 1 minute behind schedule.
I hope someone's not put anything in the IT department's water supply, although maybe they should consider it...
I passed a closed-down shop in Twickenham High Street today. A pile of unanswered mail could be seen behind the glass door. I wonder if our PM newsletter went there by mistake. Perhaps we will never know ...
Of no conceivable relevance to the above; some of you might be slightly less than bored to hear - it鈥檚 the way I tell them - that I returned today to discover an unexpected package containing - take a breath - The Fall: The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 CD box set. Great! Now, that was a long sentence, and I鈥檓 supposed to be someone who thinks of himself as good at writing. Next question....
My Objective (no subject) email didn't get
here
until 16.46. Can we have a sweep as to who's stops for more currys?xx
ed
Same here - prob best to post it to the blog at the same time as posting
Eddie? Club clapsed? (See headlines)
Fred:
How sweet!
ThanQ :-D
I'm glad you enjoyed that 'Ledge :-D I frogged it some time ago, but I thought it was time to put it up again....
Hello
Who's going to be paying for the further court/ hearings costs?
Gosh, it's a bit serious in Veil
Just trying something
to see what happensSo, Doc, how did you survive your d-less day?
..hum, so that's how you get bold on this blog. Was given a bum lead earlier (end of blockquote). End an ul (un-something list). Not exactly obvious. I think Roger the new coder needs to explain himself to Lissa. Mind you, not experimented here that much so not sure how the others got multiple entries. I mean, I have work to do as well.....
By the way, the usual line break html code is <br>, no need for the forward slash.
Also, some browsers are a bit touchy, so if you do use <p> to start a paragraph, don't forget to end it with </p>; I learnt this bit the hard way.
(38) Frances:
About 96% as well as I do any other day.
SO this is the html tag experiment, blog!
'strong' for bold and 'i' for italics works then.
Finally worked out the links on words!
A list. Seems to remove the margin.
one
two
three
But why bother with all the html junk when a simple 'return' does the same?
Or 'p' for paragraph?
Thanks Lisa I have had a go as suggested! Better than nothing, what about some size, colour and font changers! Image tags etc. Oh and fix underline! :-)
Hi John W at 37. I frogged at 40 on Veil but everyone seems sadly missing tonight. The serious comments there are fine, but we don't want to turn into a blog when we can still be a frog, do we?
Missing you all.
Well that did some odd stuff differently to when previewed, mainly with the list things!
So who can explain the list then? It has added a number to each, and auto bolded them too. But why the white empty boxes, and only 2? very odd.
Ah perhaps they can 'title', so points made after each are numbered.
- one
The first thing on my list is.
- two
Then the second thing is.
- three
Finaly a third point.
Hope I have it now!Dr H - I am kurious...
did the whole "d" thing arise from the inimitable (and weird and frightening world of) Mark E Smith?
just thinking of speaking without consanants an' all...
bhhffignuuuu prinzz - ah
No, it came from the historymatters blog site. I had a look there and found the text, 鈥減lease enter some keywords describing your day ... words describing what you id鈥. They id it first!
By the way, are we actually going to get the PM oldsletter?
Phew it looks like the serious thread next door has got people all riled up! Probably just as well that I didn't manage to log on after dinner last night, as I'd had a glass (or three?) of the fermented grape juice, so my comments would've been a bit too silly for the "Concerned of Sidcup" and "Outraged of Tunbridge Wells" next door. I suggest we let them have their "discussion" there, close the door quietly, and all convene 'round Eddie's later for some frogging instead:)
Well there is this thread. Yes I did have a glass of wine last night and may have been a bit hard on John H. I know he'll take it well though.
Hi Sara (42),
As FF pointed out this morning, it was getting really rather heated there, with loads of new bloggers, true, but all being serious. In fact so serious, I could not see where to insert some humour to lighten things up, without causing trouble. While like everyone, I have an opinion, it may not be that worthy an opinion, so was not inclinded to get involved.
Does anyone thing that when the top Brass visited Eddie a few days ago, he was induced to try and get a serious tone to this blog? I mean, this Veil business is not the first time he's started a thread with the intention of being serious, albeit until yesterday we've normally subverted that. There's more than enough blogs - even on the 大象传媒 - for serious comment on serious topics. Or do we have to get the News Quiz to start a blog for our tastes?
Ah, friday PM, which means Manveen will be trawling through all the blogs for the letters section. I guess if any blog comment is made this week, it'll come from the Veils thread.
BigSister, I've found this site which sells packets of them. So you could keep 4 back for future competitions
As this is far away from the current blogs I'd like to take up something that John W wrote at [39] :
By the way, the usual line break html code is <br>, no need for the forward slash.
Ah, not true. The forward slash for yer single wotsits (unitary? <img> is another example) is to make it pass tests for good XHTML (of which HTML is a subset, yawn), so <br /> is good XHTML and you can put little icons on your webpage to say you are W3C XHTML 1.0 compliant and get loads more respect from, er, some people.
Hope that helps :)
ah - Dr H (48)
were they interested in our egos too??
often all you get from blogs... which is why this place is so different..
It would be interesting to see if on the "serious" threads, the bloggers actually discuss. Do they reply to each other, or is it just a vent for frustration?
I tried replying to a serious discussion a while back (before the cones were put out for serious traffic) but heard nothing from the person. Hey ho.
Actually, if anyone knows any students, this would make an interesting bit of research...
hm - just been to the serious thread (is a veil made of serious threads? anyway..)
It seems from my skimming that the only people replying to each other - heck even referencing each other - are the regulars.
I've got nothing against venting frustration and leaving it at that but... actually, maybe I do. The issue is about us educating ourselves, talking to each other. Yeah, I know, it ain't gonna get us world peace tomorrow, but... we all change the world around us by everything we do and don't do.
doo bee do be dooo
Replies to others
Will be a waste of my time
If they don't check back.
Now I realise
Ther's a flaw in my logic.
Damn, damn, triple damn.
hm, initial try
reply to one seeking here
me myself and I
No longer alone,
I am happy to welcome
A kindred spirit
blimey, what to say?
cover on the well, lifted
but no pail inside
I once had a go
But I fear it was quite poor
So I shall just say
Whisht (55) - I noticed that too - we regulars have learned to behave differently than they do on other blogs.
One two three four five
Six seven eight nine ten plus
Have I got it yet?
Dr H ha ha
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha ha ha!!
Supercalifra-
gilisticexpiali-
docious... oh bugger
whisht (55) - I think that comment epitomises this frog - a thoughtful, intelligent observation, with self-awareness resulting in "doo bee do be dooo". Brilliant.
crikey John H, thanks very much.
I've just been trawling backwards (how far do any of us go back??) and now have had the honour of having really nice things being said about me in a couple of places. all rather humbling really.
It would seem trite to say "I like your posts too" at this point, though its true.
I'd dearly love to be insightful or witty now, but just wanna be under the covers, so I'll pop my head in to wherever people've been chatting tomorro night!
again, thanks!
