    Andycra&&,

In some other thread you said that %lt;br /> was the correct html code, as it's a subset of xhtml. While I agree about xhtml, I disagree about html, which, at least historically, has always been given as %lt;br>, as shown all over the place in books, on line fora etc. Browsers will have to accept it for a long time... It does say "HTML tags" by the comment box, not xhtml. Well, that's my opinion, anyway.

It is, however, of academic interest here, especially as the html code you use to get bold here is not exactly obvious.

So wrong, Eddie. But then we didn't know you wrote them at weekends either. So here we are again, happy as can be ....

Glad treatment went well, Fearless, and that you found the choccy. Someone on the last thread thought that my SO could be scared of Mr Big Spider. Not true. Needing to get at the carton (see previous thread!) I implored him to help, so he picked Mr BS up, traipsed across the yard and put him carefully in the boiler room to keep him warm and dry, as it was raining outside. Now, left to my own devices I resort to the hoover.

    Dr H (5) - perhaps that's because there's less news at weekends?

  10. At 02:15 PM on 21 Oct 2006, wrote:

Sara, The thought of you intentionally creeping into the boiler room with the vacuum cleaner is awful. I'm sure that Mr BS is far more afraid of you than you of him/ her.

I can only hope you aren't going to use a Dyson. What a way to end up - spinning around and around and slowly loosing all your legs -- and after just having a wash and dry!

In fact, although I read this fascinating blog during the week, I am only able to post at weekends - evil work making it difficult for me to do things other than what I am being paid for - what a drag.

So hello y'all, I feel I know you all very well!

  14. At 02:52 PM on 21 Oct 2006, Sara wrote:

Johnnie, I don't agree that Mr BS is more afraid of me than vice versa. He is very big (for his species, that is) but has a very tiny brain. I doubt he has a concept of the future, let alone fears for it. He also conceals the direction in which he is facing which means you can't tell which way he will run. That's not very nice, is it? So let's have no more of this anthropomorphism.

Do you remember Winston and the rats in "1984"? For me, it's big spiders.

Sorry to hear about the salmonella, Chris tP. Hope that they've done to you whatever is required to fix you. Just for the challenge, I'm half tempted to try to think what I've eaten over the last few weeks! That's quite a long time period - did they explain why? Intuitively, you'd think that it would be something that would strike quite quickly.

I'm not happy with all this BS discussion. I really don't like them at all. If possible, I do try to deal with the big ones with a glass or something similar (yep, that's right - have a glass of wine and hope it goes away...) - no seriously, when they get to a certain size, I can't help thinking that somebody might notice if you do away with them. But if they choose to appear in places that can't be (safely) reached with a glass and a pointless postcard, they have to answer to the Dyson or the fly swat (very useful). The dogs are sometimes quite helpful. Hm, "helpful" is perhaps too strong. The labrador can dispatch pretty BSs quite successfully if she's alerted at an appropriate time. The Bassett Hound can't. He likes to take an interest, but usually ends up coming for attention as the BS runs over his head. The cat can be a real expert - but only if he happens to be interested. Brr, don't want to think about this anymore.

Actually, I have one gripe at this plan. I think that the letter "x" should replace the "ch" construction, as it does in, say, catalan; although, of course, in latin, for example, " ch" is pronounced hard (as in Cat), and "c" is soft (as in CHurch), which argues for the original version.

    Sara (77),

I was doing mother's shopping at Waitrose this afternoon, I did not notice haddock fish fingers mainly as I don't buy her frozen food; her freezer gave up, and in any case she was getting a bit confused with frozen food. But I'll have a look next time.

Looks like my advice re the hoover (16) worked, then. Poor little brother of BS was frightened to death.

I also hope HoL does not come up. May have to avoid the frog tomorrow if it is the topic...

    Jonnie (78),

if they've not changed the recipe, I quite liked them; not quite the same taste, though.

Also, WtW presenter definately said Lisa, not Liza as in Minnelli, or the correct Lissa. Lissa, if you read this, what exquisite punishment do you have lined up Brian Hanrahan?

Also, coming back to the thorny topic of HTML tags, I viewed the source (i.e. what the computer downloads) of a page, which is how I worked out how to do bold. Preview is different to actual comments. Anyhow, there must be some preamble at the top which changes the meaning of the HTML tags. Set Roger the new coder onto it.

Sorry, someone told me this joke & I just thought it was amusing if you haven't heard it before. If you have then please avert your eyes.
There was once an inflatable boy, who went to an inflatable school where all the teachers were inflatable too. During a maths lesson, the class were told to take out their compasses & draw a circle. The boy was waving his compass around in the air & accidentally stabbed his teacher. Terrified at what he had done, he tried to run away, but tripped in the doorway & pierced the door jamb with the compass. Now completely hysterical, he tried to kill himself by stabbing his own leg...
A few hours later, he awoke in hospital, with his (now reinflated) teacher standing over him. She said "I am deeply disappointed in you, my boy. Not only have you let me down, you've let the school down & worst of all you've let yourself down."
