And we have

Eddie Mair | 14:18 UK time, Wednesday, 8 November 2006

two more. Some comments on previous postings complain - rightly - about the odd order these are coming up in. I'm not being cruel. I'm posting them in the order Richard put them in. That way I'm less likely to screw up.

Big Sis says this is "two PM regulars wrestling with the PM frog" (and adds that it's a real postcard)

frog.jpg

While Bob Shepherd in Preston sends us something it took him all of ten minutes to complete, and costs £75 million. Whether you can make out the small print, I dunno.

Oh all right. It says "Post Modern Collectors' Item 2048. No Pollocks in the Sea"

    Hello,

I'm thinking of doing something different with my hair. Thoughts?

Slightly less important - tonight's programme. There will be quite a lot on the US elections. Justin is standing by for us. DON'T under any circumstances phone Virginia. We're being told repeatedly that there's some kind of weather/atmospherics problem - it's too close to call, apparently.

The main news, as I write, comes from the Middle East. I've just recorded an interview with a senior Israeli spokeswoman about what she called the "tragedy" in a town in Gaza, when Israeli tank-fire killed eighteen Palestinians. Hear that, and accounts from the scene, during the programme.

Also: Harriet the cow. Don't look at me like that. It's a story.

Oh and Nils is hot on the heels of the hamper people.

The programme editor, a Peter something, has asked me to direct you to his blog. Something about crime he wants you to think about. It's not a test and there won't be any prizes...but if you have a song in your heart, why the hell not?

    Eddie,

Again about your hair. The point made on another thread about the top of your head being cut off and therefore it being difficult to judge how it looks is apt. And the webcam isn't working. But I did see you when you stood in for Paxo a few months ago..... and you looked fine.

It's a hard fact for men that, as they age, many find their hair getting thinner, or worse. Lots of chaps nowadays go for extreme measures - which can like fine if you have the bone structure of, say, Yul Brynner (if you want to look like a dead matinee star). But it's not a style that suits everybody.

You look just fine. And to prove the point, here's a poem wot I wrote:

    ODE to EDDIE

If you don't have a mop
    Of thick wavy hair
But are thin at the top -
    Whose to care?

    You're top of our list

    Of your hair.

    So, keep up your nerve
As you speak on the air
    And don't lose your verve
    Mr. Mair.

    So there.

    -----------

Alternatively - and in a neat way linking to an earlier thread - you could take note from the following piece uncovered on the backbytes website:

    "TO BALDLY GO

We bring relief to those of you who are silently wondering what on Earth you can do about the curse of male pattern baldness while at work.
Research by scientists at Jena University, Germany, shows that some balding men can be treated with caffeine to delay hair loss. There are two ways to accomplish this: either drink between 60 and 80 cups of coffee a day or, more practically for those of you who have to spend at least some time at your desk, smear coffee directly on to your scalp.
Of course, if you do this with a sideways motion, it will have the added benefit of sticking your comb-over more securely to your head as well. "

    -------

Personally, I'd stay just as you are and change the mirror.

    All,

May I add (through clenched teeth) my appreciation of Eddie's excellent interviewing abilities. Such 'spokespersons'/apologists make my blood boil. It's clear it's the Palestinians' fault - they should just go away somewhere as there isn't room for them in their homeland, and they can't even get a good night's sleep in the open-air prison that is Gaza, one of the most crowded pieces of mostly waste-ground on this beleaguered planet. GRRRRRR!

"A father of one child who was killed told me: "One missile I believe could have been a mistake, but the number of missiles that were fired, I can't believe that was a mistake."

A resident who works in one of Gaza's hospitals says: "I have not seen injuries like this for a long time."

"The shrapnel severed peoples hands and arms and they were left lying on the ground," Dr Ali said.

He had been sleeping in his bedroom when the shells struck the next door building. The windows of his bedroom had been blasted out and there was glass on the ground.

Dr Ali tells the same story as everyone I spoke to, that there had been no anti-Israeli attacks by Palestinian militants from this area, as the Israeli military claims, before the shells struck.

"I did not get woken up by anything during the night. There was no sign of rocket fire during the night," Dr Ali said.
