When froggers go on holiday
they keep in touch - which we love.
Jonnie says: "This photo was taken last Wednesday at the Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka called Pinnawela. There are around 76 Elephants at the Orphanage and they are taken twice a day to bathe from the river Maha Oya that runs by the Orphanage. You can see two very young ones if you look closely. Tried to send this last Thursday but the one dial-up computer refused to cooperate."
Certainly it knocks Chris' efforts outside our office window into a cocked hat...

I did try and send a more conventional "hello Froogers" message in the sand but as some of the Beach Froggers will realise I was bitten by a dog and will be off in the morning to our local surgery for the last anti-rabies jab!
The smallest Elephant (mid upper picture) is around three weeks old and on a diet of Mothers milk. The larger ones are fed 76Kg of green leaves amongst coconuts and other things.

Leg is healing nicely but costing a fortune. So far 拢70 in vaccinations in Sri Lanka and just been informed (rightly so) that the remaining two jabs are not done on NHS and will be around another 拢50.
Re: Gillian, An elephant did come into the Hotel called Monika, aged 42.
I did pluck up courage and offered her a banana. Later one of the German guests had a ride on her and on dismounting Monika wrapped her trunk around the said guest and whisked her in the air. I'm relieved it wasn't me.

Jonnie (14 at the moment) I'm also glad it wasn't you......I dread to think what else you would have injured if you had whisked that woman in the air! Just to be nosey....didn't your Travel Insurnce cover the cost of your jabs?
Rabies is a nasty, sometimes fatal, illness and asymptomatic - you don't always know you have it. Late symptons are darkening of the skin (so you look tanned) and lightening of the hair (like that sun kissed look), so you had better keep up with the jabs.
I listened to the heelies article this evening and thought it well covered. I seem to remember when skateboards were first all the rage and there were similar reports of casualties. Perhaps we are all getting a little over-protective?
Btw, I wasn't allowed to have a skateboard because my parents thought them to be too dangerous.

It's been grey & dull here today- feels like forever. Only glimmer of hope was that at 5 pm (why do I notice that time particularly, I wonder? ) it still wasn't quite dark. Things can only get better!

Bit of a problem now as I need the next injection (to be on the safe side) tomorrow, or latest Friday - but no one seems to stock the vaccine. I have a prescription from the Doctor and have just been to all the late night chemists (including Asda) and they all tell me that it could be a week or so! Asda suggested going to the hospital, so I'll keep you informed.
Sri Lanka has many rabid dogs I'm told and the Doctor out there informed me it was imperative to keep the jabs up as the incubation period can be up to one year.... they may be scare mongering of course!

Travel insurance (after hanging on to an 0870 number for 20 mins) have a 拢60 excess and only on treatment out there, so can't be chuffed with all the paperwork involved for 拢10. Asda have now said that if they had the ampoules they would be 拢30 each .. so this is turning into an expensive dog bite now!!
For what it's worth, the Sri Lankan Doctor said that more Cats carry Rabies than dogs but it's the incubation period which is worrying. Intentionally staying up late to gain back 5.5 hours difference of jet lag.
It's nice to be back though.
Now I'll have to pay my debt for the carbon emissions on a half empty 12 hour flight out there and having the central heating cranked up here in Bournemouth...... Suggestions!

Tonight, when you told me all the scary details of the chiwawa attack, I was so glad I wasn't there.
Jonnie - longest known incubation period 11 years! But, vaccine 100% effective - no known breakdowns.
Have you tried phoning a travel clinic eg British Airways? I know our School of Tropical Medicine (Liverpool) keeps it in stock at their travel clinic.

Jonnie - I think the blog has a dose of rabies. It keeps growling at us & not letting us post. It's very fierce at times, & quite irrational. If you get the magic ampoules, maybe you could get a spare for the blog too? (I'm sure the licence fee would cover it)

I tried to post earlier to Jonnie to suggest phoning BA travel clinic - but I guess it's probably sorted by now, what with all the bloggage. The (Liverpool) School of Tropical Medicine keep rabies vax in stock but it's rather a long way to come!! (Or we have some canine vaccine in the fridge downstairs...:-) !)

Thanks for all your advice. I eventually got somewhere with the Health Protection agency. I spoke to a lady with a beautiful carribean accent who started by asking me all the details of the incident. She specifically wanted to know whether the attack was provoked.
I explained that it wasn't provoked, however the Doctor in Sri Lanka had suggested it could have been because I was white! (implying that the dog usually saw black people and could have been alarmed)
Well on explaining this to the Estella from the HPA, she literally laughed and laughed, and said I'd made her day..... the first incident of a racial dog I guess :-)
Anyway to cut a long story short, brevity being todays catch word (and not publish too many words and get told off by Eddie)
The vaccine will be sent to the surgery first class tomorrow at no charge. It's free if it's a 'post exposure' incident. Thanks to the kind lady at the Asda pharmasist for explaining that I should not be paying for it.

So glad you can get hold of the vaccine at no further cost. I must say, people complain about the NHS but in comparison to other countries I've been to, they generally come up with the (free) goods when you really need them. About 10 years ago I had a 6 month course of something called Z*l*dex, which in those days was retailing at about 拢110 per injection. I felt very grateful that the NHS was meeting the cost for me, as in NZ or Australia I don't think it would even have been suggested. And if it was, I would have paid for most of it, or not had it.
Hope you are feeling better soon, & able to be friends with your dog again (when you are out of quarantine, I guess!).
Jonnie: Seen you posting above since emailing you. V. glad you're getting your vaccine. Hope it doesn't hurt too much. (Simon: If you're listening, get Jonnie a Walnut Whip to make it better .....)

Well I didn't know about the Health Protection agency either
They were charming and sorted it all out, including the liason with my local practise in getting the vaccine to them. I found it via a link from the Dept of Health website on advice from the ASDA pharmacist.
