It's the Chinese Year of the Pig

Eddie Mair | 11:53 UK time, Monday, 19 February 2007

though I'm still writing Year of the Dog on my cheques.

Hugh sends these final thoughts and pictures from China:

"New Year's Day, Beijing. Mind your ears - this was L O U D. Mind your eyes too. This was CRAZY. Hope that man 's cigarette doesn't get too close to that roll of firecrackers.... Drape them all along the fence. Bang, Whoosh, crackle, smoke....HAPPY NEW YEAR! SHINYE HAU! If you have been, thanks for listening. Zai Zhen. "

Hugh, and team, it's been fascinating. Thank you all so much for your insights and the word pictures as well as these.

Not to be a killjoy, but can't help feeling the celebrations didn't improve the pollution though.

Thank you for such and informative, eye opening series. I think it was made better by the fact that it seemed fresh, interesting, bemusing (at times) to you as well.

Somewhere in the ether is a posting from me to Hugh to thank him for his lovely pictures, for letting us share in the celebrations, hoping his eardrums are recovering, that he has a safe journey to his next assignment, and to assure him I for one will be listening out for that.

Oh, and hoping he's getting stuck into writing his impressions into something more lasting that we can, at some future date, all share.

BTW, Eddie, have tried to solve your problem .....

    Hugh,

Your reports have been absolutely wonderful, and I have enjoyed them immensely. Eddie and yourself are the Fred and Ginger of radio broadcasting.

This is just a me too, really. Hugh is such a star - what brilliant reporting. If there is any justice, I'm sure there will be a Sony in it for him. If not, he has our appreciation at least.

Was my praise of Hugh too toe-curlingly embarrassing?

Maybe we should be writing to Feedback to praise, rather than blame, this week? A vote of appreciation for Hugh & his mission on our behalf. (With maybe a gentle remark that it's so nice to see his pictures on the blog, now that it's working so well .)
Give that man an award of some sort.

    Re Annasee (and feedback)

Well it might then get a mention. All they seem worried about is the message boards.

Did you hear the nice lady who spoke to Roger referring to the 'Lurkers' !

    That made me smile.

Me too Hugh! (I wonder if that means something worth saying in Chinese???) Thanks for your excellent reports and pics.

Jonnie (13), I heard the talk about lurkers and had to smile too.
