We've just tried
to send the wonderful PM newsletter. We made enquiries of those in the know when Tuesday's newsletter didn't arrive till Wednesday - but I think everyone's away/on holiday/been made redundant. So with the blind faith for which we are famed, we have sent out the newsletter below. Hope it reaches your inbox.
"Hello,
In the face of all experience, I am trying to send you a newsletter today, Friday Feb 23, 2007. Like a tagged balloon being released at a child's birthday party, it will be released once our editor sends it, and then we have no control over where or when it will land. Will a giant bird come and burst it? Will it crash land in a distant sea in months to come - or will it arrive safely with you? We just don't know.
In the programme tonight, we'll be asking why PM completely failed to win any awards at the Royal Television Society the other night. We think it's because everyone hates us and they're biased against us. Not because the programme, by and large, is rubbish.
Also: we'll talk about teenage pregnancies, Mr Blair's speech to Labour in Wales, Islamic schools, the UN and perhaps, curtains.
See you on the ice at 5.
Double fines during roadworks.
Martha Muir."
Mine arrived at 12.19!
It's here!
Can you get Martha on air?
x
So did mine!
I know it may sound daft, but why would a radio programme expect to win an award from the Royal Television Society anyway?
Eddie - mine just arrived at 12.32. Message received and understood, you sound bitter? Perhaps if you get rid of the trailers, you'll be back in the running for next year's? :o)
You'll always be No 1 in our ears though.
Actually it was just my little joke...
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Mr. Mair, what a tease you are!
1300 hours and no sign of it here.
Perhaps, Eddie, you'll get an award in the Sonys for putting up your own shelves? Or for knitting on air? Or for making the tea? Or keeping bees (ah, no, that would be wasps, wouldn't it?)
I hear Martha's already in line for one .....
BTW, how much is it costing to send out your email, given that Tony (apparently) spent £6,000 on emailing all who object to road pricing
Got mine - and did it make me smile after a cruddy lunch hour? yes it jolly well did!
Eddie,
"I think everyone's away/on holiday/been made redundant."
Might that indicate where the blockage(s) might have been? Mine arrived in under an hour - a record!
Yours Aye,
ed
Martha, dear:
The answer is 12.57.
No sign of mine yet *sob*
Mine's here. Eddie, we all know you're trying....and we love you for it. BTW, the pink shirt was lovely. Must have been for Martha's benefit. Did you go out to celebrate her success?
Well, Eddie, lots of well-deserved praise on Feedback just now! Jonathan must be very, very worried .......
Oh, I forgot, of course you like dressing down. So, Jonathan's safe for a while longer?
I'm at the office so won't get mine until I get home -- which will be at some ungodly hour tonight. Actually, which are the Godly hours, does anyone know please? -- I'd like to avoid them.
"PM -- the triumph of hope over experience."
Eddie, Feedback listeners just asked for more of you, over and above that Dimbleby fellow, so I think you have bragging rights regardless. The quip you made about expenses did get you into a bit of trouble, as I thought it might, but it was very funny.
Hope you were listening or can 'listen again', it was right at the end.
Congratulations Eddie -
Feedback just had some gushing tributes for your chairing the AQ last week!
smiles and smiles and smiles all round.
Just been listening to Feedback. Finished with fulsome, and well-deserved, praise of Oor Eddie, Chairman Mair on AQ. Watch out Eddie, someone wants to know how much you claimed in expenses. Better nobble the moderators to delete all mention of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Lear!
OK,
who heard all the comments on Feedback concering EM's chairmanship of AQ last week? Someone who could one day grow to fill NC's seat in that chair, I think.
Hi,
Just checking in to announce the safe arrival of our bouncing baby newsletter at 12.53 on Friday 23rd Febuary 2007 weighing a healthy 9KB and named Friday's Newsletter, it was a long and tiring delivery but all doing well, Congratulations!!!
Bye x
Strapline suggestion:
"News with a size 0 carbon footprint."
Re Feedback. When you've been around as long as I have (since 1762) you learn that as sure as night follows day, criticism follows praise. And it's normally equally deserved.
My birthday lunch has stimulated my creative cider, so today's PM strapline suggestions are on me.
Fancy another?
PM "... because other news programmes are, by and large, rubbish."
99 newsletters,
Floating in the cyberspace,
Panic bells in all e-mails,
There's something here from that PM place,
The Frog machine springs to life,
Silver-Fox says "Blog is nice",
Others say "It just got here",
As 99 newsletters appear,
...
99 dreams I have had,
In every one a red balloon,
PM's on and Eddie's pretty,
In a rugby shirt that's fitty,
If I could find a souvenir,
To prove the newsletter was here,
And here is a red balloon,
No hang about, it's just Geoff Hoon...
Die Katze des Rostfreien Stahls
(Mit der unshaven armenpitten.)
Yes my newsletter arrived safely at lunchtime thank you. Very funny.
Does anyone know where we are supposed to send a change of email address for the newsletter delivery? (We've just changed ours in attempt to limit the amount of tedious sp*m we receive, & also for deeper darker reasons which I do not understand even when they're explained to me by SO) We sent our new address to the majordomo bbc address as couldn't see where else to send it- is that right?
I loved the times online story link. I note you are supposed to be seeking out "Domestic exclusive " news stories. Well here's one for you. SO has been busy painting our cellar a very cheerful yellow all over. Now when you walk down the cellar steps, it's like walking into a lake of custard. No-one else has seen it yet, so, ergo, it's a domestic exclusive. Just for PM.
Chris Carter - just wondered - are you an Archers' listener? Don't follow in Susan's social climbing direction will you now?
Annasee - I suspect you have to make a new subscription application which I know you can do from the PM website
You can unsubscribe your present emailing as detailed within the newsletter.
Now then Eric (23), This self-depreciation all adds to your charm, but you really oughtn't to take any notice of knockers. Enjoy the praise; ignore the criticism -- don't let any of it change you.
Yep, I did just implore Eric to ignore knockers.
Simon Groom would've been proud...
(23)
Your sounding awfully neagtive tonight - or is it just post Oscar nerves??
SSC - that, dear frogger, was fabulous
Annasee,
Probably easiest to re-subscribe to the newsletter with your new email address. It may give you two chances to get a copy (like buying two lottery tickets).
Dear Eddie,
I didn't mind your p.m. newsletter arriving late, I was in London for a few days, no computer, and was more than happy to catch up when I got back, and congrats on you chairing any questions, you were great, let's have some more, how about 'Just a minute' and 'I haven't got a clue, keep the good work up, I love your programme. Christine Cook
Eddie
12.04 and 19 seconds! I must be the winner?
What fun we do have running off to see whether or not 'it' has arrived and then posting to you- I'm sure you can hardly bear the suspense!!
Well- anyone beat me- if you know what I mean...

SSCat (25) and Annasee(26) Great! Thanks for the laughs.
Eddie,
Have a lovely weekend, I hope you’ll be back on Monday, a little wiser, a little happier, maybe a little chubbier and a little more loved up.
oops - I meant pre...left my brain on the beach
Eddie: Was that AD or BC?
Just a thought why pm didn't win any awards at the Royal Television Society..... maybe its something to do with being on the radio!
I look forward to pm EVERY afternoon!

Little Miss P: Chubbier? That's a bit personal, isn't it? Tread carefully, now.

Thanks to everyone for the newsletter advice. I think we have sorted it. There seem to be "lists" involved. Looking good so far.
After Eddie's gloomy comment above "Re Feedback" I was trying to think of whose tone of voice it reminded me. Got it eventually. Eeyore. There's a new name for your signing off, Mr Mair.
Stephen - how could T Blair have spent £6000 on emailing us all? I thought it was free?
Val (27) ha! I've been thinking that too. Dangerous woman that Susan!
Eddie, you were great on Any Questions last week, and almost great on Any Answers - it seemed like the producers had jealously set you up with the most moronic callers you could possibly have and you were too polite/out of practice to cut them off.
I missed most of PM this eve, but surely you couldn't compete with Woman's Hour this am which had live and recorded black women talking. Surely a first in a while for Radio 4. I live in the Peckham vicinity and am building a website for a youth project (ditto) and it was refreshing indeed to hear those girls' voices, even though it was hilarious to hear one young girl call holding a gun for protection a "two-knifed-sword"...
I bumped into Cumbrian John today (in S.London). He's a boring and weird but quite pleasant bloke from Cumbria (hence his nickname) who I haven't seen hide nor hair of for 2 years. Unfortunately, I didn't predict a train crash. But still it's weird. If I'd met a self proclaimed virgin as well I think I might've started selling my special powers to the powers that be. Mind you, Cumbrian John is so weird, he could be a virgin.
God, you'd think News 24 would be as good as PM with pictures. But at least you get the right captions with PM. News 24 doesn't even get a listing in the Radio Times.
"Radio with pictures - get the right captions"
Oh, and go to www.uglyrumours.com
Re: susie sue,
Tony looks a little like George Michael there! I think it's the teeth.
Re: News 24 -- they do make the odd mistake now and again, as does PM.
Having seen the set up a while back it's a hub of activity and dealing with news breaking stories for some of the time.
Radio has one great advantage in that it doesn't have to worry about the pictures.
Apologies to all for my flippant comment about the Cumbrian rail crash. I was thinking of the psychic story I saw on Newsnight, but mentioning it was in very poor taste.
Not to be disloyal, but this is the kind of response we get from Paddy, Eddie! Shall stop bragging now otherwise he'll be put off broadcasting about it.

Helen,
What a good idea. Your email has got me replying in the same font somehow! My brother is obsessed with the programme The Verdict too, and I suspect you are in tune with many others who'd like to hear him reflect on it.
Thanks for joining the BH editorial team !
All the best,
Paddy O'Connell
Presenter,
Broadcasting House
You make a fair point Helen (51) but as you are well aware, Paddy doesn't actually exist. So explain THAT to me! And Annasee - trust me. It's the circle of life. Praise is lovely, but in my experience it's often followed by criticism. Especially on Feedback, where I'm told plaudits one week normally inspire those with a different view to write in for the next week. It's how it works. I am much more Tigger.
Afternoon Tigger.
Forgive me for not noticing this sooner, but I have, belatedly, spotted the floor in your posting at number one:
At 12:17 PM on 23 Feb 2007, Eddie Mair wrote: Mine arrived at 12.19!
Care to explain yourself?
Yes (53). ´óÏó´«Ã½ Clocks. And the pips are always 17 seconds out. But don't tell a soul.
51 & 52 I have to agree with Helen, as I've also received a very nice email from Paddy. Unlike one I received from PM which accused me of harbouring rabid animals, I seem to remember.....
eddie, isn't it caused by that odd delay you get when listening online?
Enjoy your Sunday!
Re 54, I shall keep mum, but I think some people may already have noticed "pip problems" (see 'Jonnie sends this snap').
Aperitif, did you mean floor?
I may well be sulking now anyway Eddie, at least you read out my email about sat nav, Paddy just flattered me & didn't come up with the goods! Anyway, I am now permanently yours; I've always loved tigger best of all!

Ah - panic over, SO came home in the nick of time, right-clicking, of course, oops sorry, I shouldn't be let on the pc on my own should I.....
Val, your SO came home right-clicking, eh?
Is he a Spanish dancer, by any chance?
we too - or even we two since I mean husband and self - have had e-mails from the very nice Mr Paddy O'Connell.
Only yesterday my husband said, 'should we take the cardboard off this Broadcasting House preserve spoon wot we won and use it?'. The answer was necessarily no as I am sure it will keep it's value (ha, ha) better with the original packaging.
I'm glad you think you are Tigger Eddie, since I am Eeyore and two Eeyores on one blog wouldn't be good. We always called Son No 1 Wol because althuogh he was clever, he wasn't quite as clever as he thought he was.
Any other froggers with Winnie the Pooh alter egos?
Oooh, admin annie, you've actually won a BH spoon?
Gosh!
Would you post a piccie of it on the frog if you ever do get around to opening it? I'm very curious...
Well frankly it sounds as if this putative "person" Paddy O'Connell (whoever he may be, if he actually exists) has been lowering his value by being so generous with his emails. He'll be as bad as T Blair soon, if he keeps emailing back to everyone who writes to him.
Sorry, I seem to be wittering. The house is filled with horrible (probably toxic) paint fumes. SO has painted the cellar floor tonight. Grey. Now it looks like a custard lake with a pollution scum on the surface.
Big write up in Sat Telegraph re your operas, GM. Did you see it? (In the Arts & Books review section)
Jonnie, I can't see your web cam, it won't connect. Do you switch it off sometimes?
Nothing wrong with grey; it's Ron Dennis' favourite colour.
Hahahaha! Well spotted Sparkles (58&9), A clear example of writing what I heard in my head and not checking before posting!
Think I posted 60 on the wrong thread - my crie de coeur was on the Beach, so that probably made no sense at all, sorry. It's all to do with my being a techno-dinosaur I'm afraid........
Annasee - thanks for the note about the telegraf, I'll see if I can get hold of one.
Also.... I thought custard was usually yellow......
Push!
Well, now, on the subject of lovely emails from Paddy, a couple of weeks ago we (he and I, that is!) had a lovely exchange about Eddie's tape of the BH trailer debacle. He's a lovely guy, very chatty and friendly, and charmingly unpresuming. While he may lack Eddie's comedic skills, I was extremely impressed by Paddy's way with his audience (and I like him on BH anyway). There's a lot to be said for him, and I, for one, would stand up for him in any Eddie versus Paddy debate.
If Eddie is Tigger, I guess Paddy is Rupert Bear.
GM - I've still got the article here - if you can't get your own copy I can send it to you. Email me via our web site.
Re the custard - the cellar is yellow.! All over, apart from the floor. Hence my "lake of custard". I've decided I really like it. It's certainly more cheerful than the washed out green it was before.
Jonnie - yes, I've not had a penny from PRS , PAMRA etc. Ever. Lots of letters from them telling me how well they're doing though. Occasionally I've met people who have had something like a £2 50 cheque once a year from them. I did get money from the last Wallace & Gromit film though - a totally unexpected treat from a recording I did many years ago with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Phil & had forgotten about. That came through the Musician's Union.
We haven't sold any CD s for a while - I think you may need to work harder on my behalf please!
Big Sister (7)
The Newsletter was sent at 12:04. Mine arrived via America at 12:36.
How come you claimed to have waited 1300 hours (54 days) for it to arrive?
Well, Vyle, 1300 hours and it hadn't arrived! But it did eventually make it ..... ;o)
Sis (70),
"If Eddie is Tigger, I guess Paddy is Rupert Bear."
Or Calvin & Hobbs?
xx
ed
Vyle (72) - hahahaha :-) But you evidently have too much time on your hands!
Vyle: My reply to you got lost, somewhere between here and LA ......
EdI: Could be, could be!
Big Sis (76), Your comment to Ed implies "Hong Kong Phooey", as in "Is it Henry, the mild mannered janitor? -- Could be!" Is my inference correct?
Well Annasee, I feel no less special, Paddy is just spreading the joy!

Annasee - thank you - my Mum has found it and is saving it for next time I'm there
And I'm relieved to hear the custard isn't grey :-)
See, I felt VERY special! Apologies, t'was a PC glitch.
