A Blog Exclusive.

Last night, a piece by our fine reporter Chris Ledgard - soon to be leaving us :o( - never made it on air. There was a host of snafus I won't trouble you with. But it was scheduled to run and never did. We thought that was a bit of a waste as the piece was ready to run but technical bits got in the way.

So here is Chris's cue and piece.

"Detectives hunting a killer in Bath have made an unusual appeal: they want to speak to a poet. Paul Kelly was murdered in a pub in the city on New Year's Eve. A number of people have been arrested but no-one has been charged. Someone though has been pasting a poem on bus shelters and lamp posts in the area around the pub where Paul was murdered. The police say the author appears to have witnessed the crime. The poet urges the killer to come forward. Reporting for PM, Chris Ledgard:

And this is the report.

Yesterday was one long SNAFU for me.

But this story is a gem!

Is there a 'Passed-Over News Story of the Year' category in the Sonys?

I'm really looking forward to hearing this piece as I was intrigued when I heard about it on the News.

Let me just make it clear (given recent activity on the Blog) that I don't live anywhere near Bath. Not that my offerings really count as poetry.

    Sorry to hear Chris is going. He's a great reporter. Is he going 'regional' or joining Al Jazeera? :o{

Eddie: It's too good to waste - Why not use it tonight? It's not too time specific that it had to be confined to yesterday's programme, surely?

Eddie, so where is Chris off to? He's not been poached by outside forces has he?

Chris (5), I heard it too, although it could've been this morning when I was trying to ignore The Today Programme and stay asleep. Either that or it was last night when I was trying to ignore the news and go to sleep. Awful isn't it? I hope (s)he finds the courage to come forward, and gets plenty of support.

    RJD (7) Hahahaha!

I also caught part of that story but had no idea what it was about. If somebody had made it up, you'd think it was a bit far-fetched. Mind you, if you relocated to Oxford, it could be a new Morse...

As an aside, where is Bath? Admittedly I put in very little effort, but my quick attempt to locate it (so I could see if there was more about the story elsewhere on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ site) failed miserably.

What a sad story. I hope the poet has the courage to come forward soon. He or she must have been traumatised.
I'm disappointed to hear that Chris Ledgard is going. Apart from the fact that his reports make for good listening, I have only just found out how he spells his surname. Good luck, Chris

John H.(10) Bath used to be in Somerset. Now it's either in North Somerset or Avon, not sure which, but you'll find it just to the right of Bristol or just to your left off junction 18 of the M4 if you're heading towards Wales. If there is anything on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ news web site it's probably under Somerset.

Thanks for that, Anne P. Couldn't see anything on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ site, but the link to other news sources included "This is Somerset" from where I found a link to "This is Bath" and they have the story and the poem.

As you might say yourself - nutter.

Re the arguing, you haven't been spouting on about how the world might be a better place if people started to show a bit of respect to each other, have you? Or suggesting that society needs to protect the less well-off, not just the high and mighty?

Where have I been? You know what it's like - things to do, places to go... Went to Canada which was rather fun.

Re the arguing: made a throwaway comment with regard to the latter of your suggestions, and then allowed myself to be wound up just a touch...

And then we got the on-air fluffs, like the bloke with the non-double-barrelled name and the 'learn to count' one.

The most enjoyable PM for a while now. I appreciate the semi-farcical off-beat items. I do like it when the perils of live radio strike. Thank God it doesn't happen all the time, or they'd be up for the Sony for best comedy programme instead.

Yes, Simon, I agree. There was quite a bit of leavening about, thankfully, given that a lot of the news was rather dire. I though it was the fragrant Charlotte, too, though she seemed better able to recover than Eddie (probably all that Newsquiz stuff!).

There will undoubtedly be some who won't have liked the juxtaposition of laughter with some of the news items, but when you're having to deal (whether as presenter or listener) with issues like murder, military tensions, bombings, etc. etc., there is a need to release some of the tension, too.

Incidentally, thinking about the bleaker stuff, I was deeply moved by the raw emotion of that poor father speaking from Japan about his murdered daughter. My heart went out to him.

And then, later in the evening, watching ´óÏó´«Ã½4 (the TV, not me looking at the trannie!), I was again moved very deeply about the History of Racism, Pt.2. Most of it was not news to me, but having a more complete picture put to me in 60 minutes was harrowing. Anyone who didn't get to see it, may I just say that the series is a 'must=see' for anyone with a conscience. I imagine it will come to terrestrial TV in a few weeks time (unless I missed it there earlier).
