Here is Rob's report, due for broadcast tonight

Eddie Mair | 13:22 UK time, Wednesday, 25 April 2007

Whenever Russia has a stand-off with some of its neighbours over the price of supplying oil and gas - there is nervousness across Britain and the rest of Europe - and not just because it ratchets up the price of heat for all of us.

By the end of the decade Russia will supply a third of all Europe's gas - many European countries are already completely dependent on Russia.

So what are the possible alternatives?

Well of course there's one of Russia's neighbours, Kazakhstan where the oil and gas boom is transforming the country. Could IT be an answer to Europe's worries over energy security?

Our reporter Rob Broomby has just returned from the Caspian Sea.

Eric, if things are closer than they appear, you've got the telescope the wrong way round.

Though that doesn't matter on radio.

And for Northern Ireland, we just burn more peat.

Come on, it was laughable enough on Monday when that silly man was talking about an English sports anthem, pointing out that Wales and Scotland had one and people didn't understand the union, despite him forgetting Northern Ireland. But now actual news reporting does it? For shame

Barryd (5) I see what you're getting at, although you are covered by "the rest of Europe". But, Eddie, for the record "UK" next time please?

That reminds me of a lecturer of mine who used to bark on about "the arrogance of calling this country 'Great Britain'". He was eventually taken to one side and given a map and an explanation. Shame indeed.
