Some of us have to work today. Stuck in a church all afternoon & evening. It's bound to be freezingly medieval. Pretty glorious right here in Manchester at the moment now though. One of our neighbours is about to start chainsawing. Well of course you'd pick a lovely peaceful Sunday to do it, wouldn't you? Maybe it's a good job I have to go out...

Happy beachcombing to the rest of you.

SO has gone off to town to buy a suit. I mean, in this weather ...! The April sunshine is just heavenly, so I think I'll abandon this nice beach for a while and go get the real thing. Will it last? Does anyone know what the long-term outlook is?

Mind you, there's something amiss with the 大象传媒 online site generally today: the 4th most emailed news story is one from Alistair Cooke's last-ever Letter from America, talking about the Democrats' growing confidence that they have the candidate to beat George Bush in the 2004 presidential election.

    Hmmmmmmmm.

I have looked for basking/bosting, and I've finally found them - in the junk section. Not sure how they ended up there when they were approved before. I wonder though if some automated system sees a single word and thinks it must be junk? I've re-approved them so they *should* re-appear.

The Easter Beach is *very* long now, and I wonder if that has anything to do with it misbehaving?

Next time I'm browsing in the lovely 'prop' shop (well worth a vist in the Old Town) I'll see what they know.

Hey Belinda (49), they make an important point. I think that sheep is one of my neighbours (it's a texel, isn't it?) - and they are constantly complaining about the available bandwidth. The telephone lines around us are fairly basic (and "long") and, regardless of the package you go for, the best download speed you can get is around 1 meg. I'm guessing that the reason most people aren't complaining about this is because (1) enabling the exchanges came pretty late, meaning that it still feels quite novel and (2) the previous 56kbps was rarely achievable on dial-up - more like 30-35 AND it used to drop constantly. So the improvement is currently more noticeable than the limitations!

Well Belinda, there's the rub. Where exactly is the point where extra bandwidth just ain't worth the bother? Personally, being a constant net user, but not engaging in movie downloading, I think that 1000 mpg on the urban cycle is OK. But it does take a while when I need to transfer large files, when I receive big email attachments, etc, and on these occasions, I would welcome better economy for the extra-urban cycle - and those people who have got 4 or 8 meg make me slightly envious.

The point is that most of us could not have imagined being online and having access to the web, say, 15 years ago. And what we take for granted now in terms of content would have been inconceivable even a decade ago. I think the study you linked to is suggesting that continued "progression" requires more bandwidth to be available so that things like on-demand TV can be more akin to the full screen TV experience you're already used to - rather than the youtube one.

It's at times like this I like to remember the fairly lengthy period in the early nineties when I didn't have a phone. Couldn't afford it. It's very easy to lose your sense of perspective. Quite a lot of years ago, I bought a piece of software online and over my dial-up modem, it took about 3 days to download it (not continuously, you understand!). Now I can download similarly sized updates in a few minutes - times really do change!

On preview, I realise that I haven't actually addressed a central part of your question - "other limitations". Yes, theoretically, you could imagine a limit on what you could do with the information capacity that was available to you. A good example is a person typing on a current PC - a lot of spare cycles, there. But, what usually happens is that you adapt what you're doing to consume the newly available data - "listen again" is a good example. So is HD on the telly box - I guess it's a kind of "push/pull" relationship: "need more information" leads to "got more information" leads to "wow, now I can have this much information, what can I do with it?" leads to "bugger, need more information"...

Here's what to do with all those carrots:

    1. chop an onion, gently fry it in big pan in a little olive oil (or butter if you're that way inclined) until onion is soft, not very browned.
    2. chop the carrots into big slices; add to the pan; add 1.5 - 2 pints veg stock (cheat: use good buillon powder dissolved in boiling water). Bring to boil; simmer for 15-10 mins
    3. add loads of fresh coriander - MUST be fresh!
    4. whizz it up
    5. reheat; stir in some double or soured cream (see butter comment! - I find it plenty creamy & naturally sweet enough without cream); garnish with chopped coriander
    6. Enjoy!

That was over 2 years ago and she is really no better somedays than the day he went. Doesn't help that he now lives abroad and so was back for the Easter hols which opened up the floodgates again. Now she is constantly looking back to the once perfect life she had that she no longer has. I find it extremely difficult to talk to her quite often because ever suggestion made seems to be thrown back. There is a lot of anger, bitterness and resentment there and if I try to make positive suggestions they can often be met with an almost angry response. I find it hard as I think I am quite a positive person and I cannot understand why she cant want to do whatever it takes to improve life, and I guess as I met SO relatively late in life and have had plenty of experience of being dumped I can't imagine what its like to have had just one love.

Fiona (who gets the first Fat Rascal and a cafetiere of Bosque Lya because her need is greatest): you're in good company, hun, and don't apologise. First the disclaimer: NOT an expert, but quite a bit of 3rd party experience (as have many froggers, I detect). I guess you'll be coming in for most of the flak, since you're someone your sis can show her real emotions to without fear of being dumped. If you can continue to show her complete acceptance & love while she's at her angriest / most depressed, you'll be more help to her than she ever knows. 2 years is and isn't a long time... I guess she was no more than a young adult the last time she was single, whereas those of us who have been round the loop, on way or another, many times, have a completely different coping mechanism, as you realise.
It does sound, though, like she's not been able to process a lot of how she feels, and that's not a happy or healthy way to live for any length of time. Unless Aperitif can take her to Bettys and replicate the art of pulling (I'm joking...)... A new relationship would probably help tremendously, but she's unlikely to fall into one of those if she's feeling so bad in herself. Have you dared mention the idea of counselling? I know, I know, some froggers will mock the idea. But they're just the fortunate ones who haven't ever seen the need, and good on 'em. As for the rest, who've had personal need or been brave enough to push our loved ones in that direction, I suspect many will testify to the help it's been. Mind you, it's a rare beast who accepts the suggestion of counselling/therapy without a fight, so be prepared to be shouted at some more. But she may thank you in the end. The alternative is for you to continue to be her support - which I'm sure you will anyway - but do you have the space, time, strength (hard when it's someone you love) to be everything she needs?
Maybe a good book would be a starting point - and I'm afraid 'recovering from relationship break-up' is the gaping hole in my otherwise quite well stocked library. I'm sure other froggers can suggest good titles.

I ought to reflect on this a bit more before sending, but wanted to get something, however inadequate, back to you fast. Hope nothing I;ve said has offended you. Big hug.

    Fiona;
Thanks for the tea. Ooh, and Rich Tea biccies too. Lovely.

I can sort of relate to this myself from a couple of different views. My marriage ended last year after nearly ten years, the last two of which were a deteriorating mess. Frankly I was relieved when we finally crossed that line. I felt like a weight had been lifted from me. So it is possible to see a positive side.

Different situation; My best buddie owns a guesthouse in Brighton. Unmarried. Had a couple of bad experiences with girlfriends in his late 20's which scared him off. He is tied to his place, with no hope of relief. His biggest asset, the hotel, is also his millstone. He knows it too.

He's slumping back into depression, which had dogged him for a while in the early 90's. I've tried to break him out of it. He needs to sell the place and get out before it kills him. He also knows this, we've discussed it and I've pitched a few eminently sensible ideas at him, like you with your sister. But he won't do it from fear. He knows how to do what he does and the place is profitable. But he cannot conceive of anything else that he can do and wonders how he can get out. He wants to get out from where he is and knows the key is to sell. He's scared to take a step that will change his life immeasurably for the better, in case he fails.

And with regards to your sis' perfect former life. Obviously it wasn't so perfect even then. Something went wrong somewhere, without knowing the circumstances or assigning blame.

Perhaps the resentment and bitterness stems from the fact that her ex- has moved on, where she hasn't? She may also resent you, for your 'perfect' life? Which makes her unwilling to listen to you and your attempts to help her.

I'm not sure what the answers are. I still try to help Best Mate but he just doesn't have the confidence in himself to change his life.

You can try to hang onto the memories of better days in the hopes that they will somehow return. But they never do. The world doesn't hold still and wait for you, it moves on. You have to realise that life is about evolution and growth, not stagnation and despair.

What she needs to do is to take her life in her own hands and start to live again, not live for the glorious memories of bygone days. She probably knows that herself but like BM she is too scared to cross the invisible border and start living again. Far of the unknown and fear of failure are powerfully negative motivators.

Thanks for the tea and biccies,
    Si.

Fiona (96) Thanks for bringing this to the beach - I can feel that you're going to get lots of empathetic advice and I hope some of it works.

I find that it's actually really hard to help people in this situation - especially if they are close family. My Mum had a breakdown about 10 years ago, and was on Prozac for a while, and, although she hated the idea of being on medication, it did help her to calm down and have some good moments. She came off it pretty quickly, but still has episodes of feeling worthless, untalented and generally a burden.

She's had a tough time and I really sympathise with her, but I sometimes find it a drag to listen to the same problems again and again and find that I run out of solutions, and every time I repeat something it sounds trite and bored. She's had some therapy, which did help, but she's of the generation where this is an admission of failure and, as a perfectionist, I don't think she'd really consider it, although I think it would help. I feel really guilty about moaning about it, because, after all, she's my Mum, but I'm also lucky enough to have bounced back from any knocks I've had and have a secure relationship to back me up.

I know that's all about me, rather than about you, but I wanted you to know that you're not alone, and that often the people closest to the depressed person aren't the ones who can be the most help.

Hi Fiona (96) I just want to say that I think two years is a very short time to grieve for the loss of a long relationship, and I'm sure that's what she's doing. I can offer you my opinion and suggestions, but, of course, those of others may differ:

Counselling probably will help -- so long as she knows it's about giving herself time and space to talk about her feelings rather about "fixing" her. I would expect her to be down for quite some time yet, but just knowing that you are there and still love her will help, even if neither of you can see that too easily right now. She is entitled to her pain, and to have the people who care about her acknowledge that pain and even to let her wallow in it for a while. That can be frightening because it seems like it will never end but it will. If she needs to cry let her cry and don't try to stop her or give her advice on feeling better; just let her know that you know it hurts and you are there for her. Don't offer solutions unless she asks for them: Nothing angers a depressed, grieving person more than being told how to recover, and anger breeds further depression. Offer her ideas and distractions and pleasant things to do without relating them to making her feel better, and let her take them up in her own time. She will start to recover when her life has changed sufficently -- that change can't be rushed.

    Happy birthday Sara (97)

Fiona: I wouldn't go on holiday with her - you'll probably end up killing each other, or at least not talking. But - and I speak from some personal experience here - how about persuading her to go on some kind of activity holiday? depending, of course, upon what might hit her button. If she's into crafts, there are great opportunities out there, and encourage her to be ambitious. Or, if she's an active type, how about something like pony trekking? Depending upon funds, there are holidays abroad which combine horseriding/ponytrekking, or canoeiing, or sailing, or whatever.

What I'm saying is, go for something which will be sufficiently absorbing that, by the end of the day, her brain will have been totally focussed away from 'her' and into 'her activity'. She'll meet other people - in a purposeful, but not predatory way - and discover new things about herself.

There's lots more that could be said on this one, but I hope that's an acorn of an idea that might be useful. Oh, and if it's an activity holiday, I'm sure it'd be fine for you to go along too - just as long as it's something you'd enjoy.

Secondly, and I repeat what Anna said, I am not an expert and rely solely on my experiences.

I have found that people in your sister's position rarely actually want advice and often don't take it even when you've gone out of your way to think about it carefully and creatively. The best thing to do (as you, as opposed to professional advice) is to listen and be there for her to sound off to. If you can, ask her what she feels she should do - turn it round (gently) so that any ideas/decisions are made by her. I agree that counselling will probably be better for her - if you can, get her to come up with the idea, she's more likely to accept it then.

All very much easier said than done - good luck. Make sure you partake of some of the goodies on the bar and have a jolly good rest before round two (or however many it is now).

Aperitif has said everything I would have said. Your sister is going through a bereavement and must be allowed to come to terms with it in her own way. She may never get over her loss, but she will find her own way of living with it. From her point of view, her life may not improve, but her coping-mechanisms will. There is no time-scale for this to happen...it can only come from her, when she is ready.

Thank you all so very very much for taking the time to write some really useful and thoughtful replies. I realise now that I have probably been trying to make too many "helpful" suggestions and perhaps I should just let her find her own way. She has gone down the counselling route but found it didn't really help her that much. I personally think something like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy would be more useful. I should point out as well that in fairness to her she did take one gigantic leap forward last summer when she went on holiday for the first time on her own. She is passionate about nature, wildlife and the environment and she went to Sri Lanka on an Explorer trip which she loved. Sadly though she seems incapable of retaining that sense of freedom and pride in herself for doing something so brave and soon reverts back to seeing herself as useless, unworthy etc instead of buildiing on what progress she makes. I guess the bottom line is there is nothing else I can do - and maybe that proves me to be a bit of the control freak that SO often accuses me of being (which I strenously deny!). I have always been determined to try and fix her! That comes from my many years of singledom when self-preservation was my essential so I learned early on how to make myself feel better whether it was wallowing in a good book, or a self indulgent shopping trip. As she met him when she was only 18 years old she needs to learn to function as an individual instead of the one half of a couple she has always been. It doesn't help that we dont (for a whole other bunch of reasons) have a close relationship with our mother so she is all the more dependant on me.

Anyway bless you all for being so kind - I actually feel quite tearful that a bunch of people who have never met me could be so kind - if only the world could be more like this blog!

And Ed - no need to worry, your reply made me chuckle :)

This is just a pre-emptive comment, you understand, but I've had an idea... When the Beach first came into existence, it was a refuge from the cold grey days of October. To be able to play on the wonderful sand of Eddie's beach helped to keep the froggers tigether and it built a community. Now, however, we're soon approaching Beach weather outside the Frog. What I propose is that when the weather outside warms up to Kate O'Mara, we froggers will be looking for a place to cool down and relax. When that happens, can I suggest that we relocate the Beach (including those camels that wish to join us, of course) so that we take over a ski resort? That'll give us a cool place to play during the summer months, complete with gluwein, fondue parties, and warming malt whisky :-)

    What do froggers think?

Don't be surprised if you cry - it's known in the trade as " a release" which I think sounds v v dodgy but there you go. It happens. And nothing you say/do in here will get out.

Drink plenty of water afterwards. Now, just close your eyes when you feel ready, and relax.

Fiona (117) You clearly care an awful lot about your sister and that will be of huge comfort to her, honest. CBT is really good for some people, especially where counselling isn't too helpful, becasue, as I'm sure you know, it explores constructive solutions to problems rather than just the reasons for them. If you think she'll benefit I hope she gives that a go. Good luck, and do give yourself a hug for being a lovely caring sister.

This British actress appeared on stage and TV, and made more than 60 films between 1934 and 1996. During the 30s she was much in demand for lead roles in minor films and supporting roles in bigger ones. In 1992 she appeared in a TV programme called, rather disparagingly, Britain's Missing Movie Heritage.

I think I saw a TV series in which she was the governor of a women’s prison, and a few of the films, but none were particularly memorable; I remembered her face, but I doubt if her name would have stuck in my mind had it not such an odd one. For many years I deliberately refrained from finding out what the first part was short for, preferring to wonder about it at idle moments.

On the analogy of Connie, I would muse, it might have been Googstance, or, as with Winnie, Googifred. And then, with wilder fancy: Penny, Googelope? Sammy, Googantha? Jenny, Googifer? Lizzie, Egoogabeth? I think some peoples names are hilarious.

But when I read in the paper that she was 90 years old last month I felt it was time to end the speculation, so I looked her up.

In a former life (the job before the job before the job that I have now) I did some work with someone who came from the principality west of Hereford. She was looking at possible bio-remediation using a certain species of earth worm. She would leave them in a bucket of earth with high lead levels for a month and then carefully get them out of the earth to avoid causing them any harm. She would then wash the earth away (some worms probably drowned at this point) before cutting them up into 1cm lengths and dissolving each segment in a different beaker of boiling nitric acid. She would then measure the lead content of each segment by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS) to work out whether the lead was “just passing through” (same concentration throughout the length of the worm) or being trapped in the flesh (higher concentrations at the front of the worm). If the latter, then there were possibilities of using this technique to move the lead below the root level of certain plants where it would be deposited when the worm died. Just don’t tell the local blackbirds!

It was a shame that her name was Nicola rather than Dorothy. Otherwise I would have been able to call her Welsh Worm Woman Dorothy (or WWW Dot, for short). Mind you, as Nic was vertically challenged in the height department, any reference to shortness within her earshot would probably have resulted in a head-butt to the knee.

Whenever I go into the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, there's always a sad moment when I see the plaque backstage to a lovely violinist who used to be in the orchestra. She was born in the same year I was, & diagnosed with cancer the year I was pregnant with my daughter. I remember how upbeat & positive she was at the time, then I didn't go back to the Phil for a couple of years. By the time I did, she was dead. When you're in your 20's I think death in your 40s & 50s seems like "they've had a good life" kind of thing. But as you get to that age yourself, & realise how much young children still need their parents, and how we feel as though we've barely begun to live the sort of life we wanted, it becomes heartbreaking to hear of people dying so young. Sorry, I'm rambling.

Not rambling at all. I'm going to be 30 this year and its struck much more I want to do and see (though have had a pretty packed/eventful life so far). 50 seems so young, in fact so does 70!! Anyway as I seem to be one of the first here this morning I have put the kettle for those who want tea, and there is a pot of coffee brewing as well. I have made some toast and there is a choice of orange marmalade or strawberry jam.

By the way (beware......am about to ramble again!!), dont you think it's marvellous the power that music can have? As you know I am a bit of a rock chick at heart and on the way in as I was in my usual pre-occupied, stressed state of mind I heard a track by Green Day called Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Well I turned it up as loud as I could, and sang my little heart out all the way through - and that, combined with the sun of course, made me feel a million times better. For 3 minutes I was off in a different world where everything else was forgotten and it felt great, it literally lifted me into the day!!

Fiona, from personal experience both sides of the fence no-one can understand what it's like to be clinically depressed if they haven't suffered from it themselves. And sadly the one thing you know above all others when you've been there, is that no-one can help. However well meaning, empathetic, desperate to help that they are, they can't. Don't want to take up too much space and say more. But your sister will come through it eventually and believe me she will say to people down the line " I don't know how Fiona managed to put up with me, it must have been awful for her.'

If you can be there for her when she's better and feeling awful about what she put you through, that's what she needs, for you to be there afterwards and not have been driven away.

The only thing you can do that will be really useful is, if she hasn't been to the doctor and got properly diagnosed and given tablets and/or some sort of therpay, persuade her to go.

Glad to see you're all frolic-ing happily. Anna R - nice to see you back here. My sabbatical? Well its been something we have talked about for a while. If you read my waffle on the Wednesday Glass Box thread you will kind of understand part of what is driving us to move. In a nutshell cost of living, quality of life, the fact that if we want to move to a bigger house then we will have to take another chunky mortgage (the one blessing about being slightly older is that our mortgage is very little :)), and that would mean me carrying on working full time. So last year I got the chance to take vol redundancy - which I accepted gladly as the trek into West London every day was becoming a chore and it just didn't fit in with my children. So we decided I would do contract work, which I have been doing since then, that way we could save more and hopefully have a nest egg which would tide us over frugally for about a year. Then we could have that year getting settled, finding our feet and hopefully seeing if we could make a life there. And hopefully that life would involve working less and we being able to be more of a mum than I feel I am now. If we dont then we return but at least we have tried and had a nice year off as well. Then we rethink our strategy........ (haven't got a plan B yet!) Of cours its a little scary, but that's life for you

So there you have it. And of course Broadband would be essential - I couldn't leave all you lovely froggers.

Right must dash - am bidding on e**y and its nearly the end....

He was repatriated at the end of 1945, she recalled. "He'd always seemed a nice friendly chap, but when the crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946, they spelt out 'Heil Hitler.'"

A list of actual announcements that London Tube train drivers have made to their passengers...

    2) "Your delay this evening is caused by the line controller suffering from E & B syndrome: not knowing his elbow from his backside. I'll let you know any further information as soon as I'm given any."

    3) "Do you want the good news first or the bad news? The good news is that last Friday was my birthday and I hit the town and had a great time. The bad news is that there is a points failure somewhere between Stratford and East Ham, which means we probably won't reach our destination."

    4) "Ladies and gentlemen, we apologise for the delay, but there is a security alert at Victoria station and we are therefore stuck here for the foreseeable future, so let's take our minds off it and pass some time together. All together now.... 'Ten green bottles, hanging on a wall.....'."

    5) "We are now travelling through Baker Street...As you can see, Baker Street is closed. It would have been nice if they had actually told me, so I could tell you earlier, but no, they don't think about things like that".

    6) "Beggars are operating on this train. Please do NOT encourage these professional beggars. If you have any spare change, please give it to a registered charity. Failing that, give it to me."

    7) During an extremely hot rush hour on the Central Line, the driver announced in a West Indian drawl: "Step right this way for the sauna, ladies and gentleman... unfortunately, towels are not provided."

    8) "Let the passengers off the train FIRST!" (Pause.) "Oh go on then, stuff yourselves in like sardines, see if I care - I'm going home...."

    9) "Please allow the doors to close. Try not to confuse this with 'Please hold the doors open.' The two are distinct and separate instructions."

    10) "Please note that the beeping noise coming from the doors means that the doors are about to close. It does not mean throw yourself or your bags into the doors."

    11) "We can't move off because some idiot has their hand stuck in the door."

    12) "To the gentleman wearing the long grey coat trying to get on the second carriage - what part of 'stand clear of the doors' don't you understand?"

    13) "Please move all baggage away from the doors." (Pause..) "Please move ALL belongings away from the doors." (Pause...) "This is a personal message to the man in the brown suit wearing glasses at the rear of the train: Put the pie down, Four-eyes, and move your bl**dy
golf clubs away from the door before I come down there and shove them up your a**e sideways!"

    14) "May I remind all passengers that there is strictly no smoking allowed on any part of the Underground. However, if you are smoking a joint, it's only fair that you pass it round the rest of the carriage."
