OK. I don't know who was responsible for the only call to the listener log yesterday. But thank you, whoever you are.

But, Eddie, when I tried to ring the number you posted last week, it was unobtainable.

I shall hie me to the PM website forthwith to find out why I couldn't get through.

nothing to do with the listeners log, but this is too techy a thing to bring to the beach. This new computer of mine came with Vista by default. Anyone else out there with Vista finding it painfully painfully slow. When I send stuff to the printer I think I could probably write it all out by hand before it actually gets round to printing. More importantly, can it be speeded up at all? SO says it's all to do with Vista holding everything encrypted but to be honest I don;t care wht it is, I just want to know if it can be cured.

admin annie: Vista IS that slow. M$ recommend corporate trainers teach their disciples to put their computers into "low power" standby mode instead of ever shutting down because it takes so long to start.

The best thing you can do is throw more memory at it - 2 gigabytes would be good.

If it is very very new and you are finding it unuseable you could reject it back to the seller. The computer company with Rodney Trotter's brother's name has reverted to XP being an option on most of their machines.

Received wisdom is that Vista wasn't ready for release in it's current slow state on the machines it claims to be suitable for. XP was much the same when it first came out.

aa (5) to be honest, the playing I've done with Vista so far hasn't flagged up any major speed issues. I have to say that the (*&^ing UAC (User Account Control) does my head in! Every time you want to change something, or run a program, it asks "Are you sure you want to do that?", even when you're trying to open a Windows program! How stupid is that?!? (Sorry, rant over...)

admin - yes I upgraded the laptop (dual processor) to Vista - possibly a stupid move as most of my software won't run on it and indeed it is much slower.

You could try control panel >System and maintenance > Perforance information and tools > advanced tools, then click on Performance options and (Adjust for best performance)

Another tip is to buy either upgrade the RAM memory or buy the fastest biggest USB dongle or flash card and stick it in in ofe the USB ports.

Vista can then use this as extra memory and it really does help. It's called ReadyBoost.

If you get stuck I'm happy for you to give me a ring and talk you through the above. Mine is a lot faster now.

Not all of the dongles work with the Vista readyboost feature. I purchased a Lexar "GB one from Staples - not expensive - and has really speeded things up.

It's worrying isn't it: one phone call could mean you've got it nearly 100% right OR nearly 100% wrong.

Your solution is to sell your new PC with Vista and get an Apple Mac! ;o)

The more boring solution is to make sure you've uninstalled all the rubbish you will have had pre-installed: trial versions, software you'll never use, etc.

Turn off all the eye-candy. (Somewhere in the control panels) If you don't have a top-of-the-line graphics card, all that stuff is like swimming through custard for your PC. It won't look as pretty, but it will be faster.
(If you want pretty *and* fast, buy a... no, I won't say it.)

Run a virus check with up-to-date definitions, and download a good spyware remover, better still a couple of them so that they catch everything.

    Lastly I second Jason & Jonnie's suggestions.

Of course you could try sending Vista back and getting a refund, then putting Ubuntu onto it instead :)

Ubuntu is free and easy and allows you to read stuff, print stuff, send stuff. Just like M$ but fast and free :)

Fearless has some experience with it and I've installed it and it looks cool.

    Ah go-on, go-on, go-on!

Andycrmakingit up - Ubuntu? Really? Sounds like an African language, you cannot be serious?

Now, that maybe was a bit negative, but it certainly wasn't malicious as I've been out all afternoon! Try again Dick Whittington, or something.....

    C'mon mods, gimme a break....

OK, so the mods are pedants, it's Turn again Dick Whittington isn't it, but that's not appropriate is it? It was Robert the Bruce who tried again, or was it the spider?

    See for gory details.

    Wasn't it turn again bright-eyes?

I think bright-eyes had to turn again because he got caught in the headlights, didn't he? Tbh that's one of a small number of books that I started and never finished, but I bet he came to a sticky end?

But then I just prefer Welsh singers... more Tom Jones than Tom & Jerry.

    Admin A, Val P, Andycr###, Fearless etc,

I prefer Slackware with Afterstep. But I'll certainly look at this latest version of U. Call me an old Un*x hack. I've never gone for icons littering the desktop. Perhaps I should launch my own distribution...after all, I'm maintaining the email programme I use these days (I did not write it, but I've ended up keeping it working).

Mepis is not bad, especially as you can run it from RAM only (that is, not touching your hard discs at all, unless you select to do so). 256MB is enough for the version I have, so you can try it without having to install it on your computer. A great emergency disk. And it has KDE, which I'm not that keen on, but it's so good overall....(I'll post a copy for a beer voucher to anyone, and it's perfectly free to do so).

Sorry, I'll hang my anorak up now. Been a long day, and a long evening ahead...

I've not touched M$ Vista, I heard how bad it was performing on existing computers, last thing I need is slow up this poor old thing...

well thanks for all the advice guys. We do actually have 2gig of memory and a top of the line graphics card - the latter to enable me to play Caesar 4.
But I've done the 'adjust for best performance' thing, so thank you for that and we'll see how it goes.
SO now claiming that the slow speed is due to our computers being networked and says he can take mine off the network if I buy a new printer for myself. Since he rarely uses the printer we already have and there is anyway no room for a new printer in my study we are at an impasse on this since I think it would be a waste of money to have a second one.

It's exciting things like this that make happy marriages apparently.

BTW, what is the telephone log? Is it the name given to the series of recordings made from calls to the PM letterline?
