The Glass Box for Monday

Post categories:

Eddie Mair | 14:10 UK time, Monday, 4 June 2007

The Glass Box is the place where you can comment on what you heard on PM, interact with other listeners and get responses from the people who make the programme.

Just click on the "comment" link.

The Glass Box is named after the booth outside the PM studio where we all discuss the programme at 18.00 every weeknight. We try to be honest and constructive. Sometimes there is criticism, and the criticised get a chance to explain themselves.

The people who make PM will read the comments posted, and will sometimes respond. Unless it's Roger Sawyer editing. He's completely hopeless. Please feel free to post your thoughts. There is a link to previous Glass Boxes on the right.

Also on the right, you'll find lots of other links you might like. The Furrowed Brow for example is the venue where you can start talking about anything serious of your choice: The Beach is a fun place, and there are links to Blog entries with photos, audio and links. And if you want to see us drone on about awards, you can do that too.

Monday's programme? Well, Id like to complain that it's taking too long to arrive. Do you think you could bring it forward to around 16:40, then I'd hear more of it.

I listen to Radio 4 every day while travelling to and from work. Last week the problem with dealing with Pedophiles was discussed at length. Well I believe I have got the solution. Surely there is a simple operation that could be performed on those convicted of child sex abuse. Something that could take away their sex drive. It might sound harsh but if it stops them damaging children then is it not something that could be considered? I have discussed this with colleagues at work and they all agree.

Catriona - paedophilia is less to do with sex drive and more to do with control and power. Unfortunately physical or chemical "castration" has not been shown to be overly effective.

There are methods of "training" convicted paedophiles that has a huge impact on their re-offending rates. Alarmingly, if they start the programme but don't complete it (e.g through early release or some logistical failure that ended the course early) they are released into the community more dangerous to children than they were before starting the programme.

(PS. This is exactly the type of conversation for the Furrowed Brow section of this Blog. The Glass Box is better saved for comment about the show after it has aired.)

I don't believe it! After last week's outcry about the trail for a ´óÏó´«Ã½ 2 television programme on a make-over for a fashion shop, we've just had another one!!!! And the programme's on Thursday for goodness sake!

Can anyone produce the piece of market research that shows a large percentage of PM listeners would want to watch such a programme?

Caitriona @2 -- what happens if it turns out that the chap wasn't guilty after all, having been the victim of 'expert' evidence? It had better be reversable, this operation you think it would be a good idea to impose on chaps of sixteen-and-three-days-old who sleep with their fifteen-and-eleven-months-old girlfriends! Those may be registered sex offenders too, you know. So may the teacher dobbed in by a lying little fifteen-year-old with a grudge.

There are also cases like that of the unfortunate taxi-driver we discussed a little while ago.

At least the people doing such operations might be able to tell a paedophile from a paediatrician, unlike some members of the public.

Whats wrong with Blair?. It should be less. He is pandering to the extremists by giving them a 1M quid. Give then an inch...............ect

As reported on ´óÏó´«Ã½ web site

"There are concerns that imams from another country may not understand British society or speak good English".

    Let me rephrase

Imams from UK do NOT understand British society or speak good English either. Period

This is ridiculous. Give them money and make them more atriculate so that they can put more spin into extremism

I hope money is not released before 27 June 07.

As a experienced graphic designer of over 15 years, I wonder how they arrived at this design solution, by committee? Because my main concern other than how it will read on a small badge for example, business card, in black and white or any other media it will be shoe-horned in and on to. It looks very dated. Had we got the bid in the early 80's it's incongruous angles may have sufficed, just.

It says nothing about London, or as a contemporary piece of design. In short, it comes across as a lazy piece of branding. It should go into the bucket with other lazy branding: Tescos and the Tory Party to name but two. How ever much the final figure is £400,00 has been wasted already.

A day of frustrations. On a raft of stories the people we wanted to speak either didn't want to speak to us or were not around at the right time. In our smelly Glassbox the view was there was too much commentary. The money back drug company wouldn't play, the National Grid wouldn't play, the foreign office weren't keen to engage on Mr.Putin's latest broadside and - get this - we did ask to speak to the designer of the new 2012 logo. But I was told that "wasn't the message of the day" from the good people of London 2012. What then was the "message of the day"? You tell me ( actually, best post on the logo thread ).

There's talk about getting on a psychiatrist who can interpret what your own take on the logo tells us - not about the logo - but about you. Mmn. Which I guess brings me back to tonight's point about too much commentary.

Would probably have been a headline that still only caused a Government Minister to come on air and assures your audience that they are doing something about it. Under normal circumstances this just gives me cause for wry amusement. In this instance it has caused feelings of anger that this person is either so stupid as to actually believe what she is saying or so callous as to not care about the reality of the situation.

Perhaps I better explain that the Item I am talking about was the one dealing with SADS and that for me this is a very personal issue in that my 15 year old daughter is one of the survivors. In our case it took nearly 18 moths of incorrect diagnosis before we were lucky enough for her condition to be correctly diagnosed. Many are not so lucky and endure living with the knowledge that their children and siblings could have been saved.

As my daughter lay in a hospital bed waiting for a 4 hour operation to save her life I asked a paediatric consultant why she could not have been diagnosed earlier. His answer was brutally direct and honest. He lacked the latest equipment that would enable a quicker diagnosis and therefore the treatment of more young people. The amount required for the equipment was only £8.000, but the Government insists that trust have to live within their budget and this was just one of the casualties of cut backs.

The Minister confidently stated that they had spent years producing ‘Chapter 8’ which has been expensively printed and distributed to all and sundry, to simply lie gathering dust on a shelf because the funds that could have been used to purchase the diagnostic equipment has already been spent, on producing ‘Chapter 8’ so that the Government could prove they were doing something.

It has been left to charities like CRY to attempt to get out a fairly basic message and to the friends of families like ours to raise the money for life saving equipment.

Please refrain from interviewing propaganda mongering Government Ministers unless they are prepared to tell the whole truth or follow up the interview with one from someone who can explain the reality not the spin.
