Hugh in Turkey

Eddie Mair | 08:23 UK time, Sunday, 22 July 2007

would have sent some snaps in time for his piece on Friday but what with one thing and another...

so here they are.

"You may or may not hear from the Turkey Team on PM on Monday - 'on merit' as they say....the final result of the Turkish elections on Sunday may not be clear before Thursday or Friday. Meanwhile, some snaps of people I've seen here over the past week....

Saadet Party supporter - small party, strongly Islamic, though not officially. One supporter on the minibus said "Allah hu Akbar" (God is Great), an older official quickly said "Shhh".

Eminey, a Kurdish woman showing her support for her favoured candidate...

...and her favoured candidate is: Nazmi Gur, a Kurd standing as an independent.

Snatched photo of Prime Minister Erdogan, on his way out of the town hall in Gaziantep (southern Tirkey, near Aleppo in Syria). Smart jackets, those security guys!

Erdogan supporters at a rally in Gaziantep. It was hot - 41 deg ...in the crowd of about twenty thousand, 120 people collapsed, according to the local TV. The Prime Minister spoke for about an hour.

More Erdogan supporters at the rally.

Old Turkey, near the copper bazaar in Gaziantep.

New Turkey - M1 shopping mall near Adana (mid-southern Turkey, near the Mediterranean). 9 screens at that cinema - films included Transformers, Die Hard 4.0 and Shrek 3.

    Thanks to Hugh, as above!!!

Is it the case that once again, Turkey is situated at the cross roads of global history, (or at least that part of the globe that affects PM listeners), as what is going on over the world in different countries is being played out in full in internal polictics in Turkey, as well as all the EU hokey-cokey, and the boarderlines with "kurdistan/iraq" - a true breath holding week ahead...!!!

Once again, Hugh is the man on the ground, as ever!

The intelligence and humour in these faces (other than the security guys!) shines out. Thanks for making the political situation in Turkey be about the people again, Hugh.

    A rare gift.

Oh Hugh! What a lovely surprise for me this bleak Monday morning!

The contrasts are very thoughtprovoking. I've never had the honour of visiting Turkey, but these photos have stirred a strong urge to go there without delay.

I'd say there's a need for a TV programme here to introduce us the the far west of the EEU to a nation which will, with luck, become a new friend in the not too distant future.

And I know the very person to make that programme. Mr. Sykes, would you like us to write to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ commissioners?

    Hey I got this wrong!:

'....the final result of the Turkish elections on Sunday may not be clear before Thursday or Friday....'

They were clear at eight o'clock last night. The prime Minister's AK Party won, with around 47% of the vote.

Not surprising really - polling stations closed at 5pm, and at 4pm in some areas. Duh!

Turnout - more than eighty percent. Hello UK! - try emulating that!

And Oh They Do Go On about the AK Party's 'Islamist roots'. This is what PM ErdoÄŸan said in his victory speech last night:

"We regard your differences as part of our pluralist democracy. It is our responsibility to safeguard this richness."

An AK Party man summed it up when he told Shaun Ley on The World This Weekend yesterday that - yes - they want women to have rıght to wear head scarves...but they also want women to have the right to wear mini-skirts.

Anyone got a problem with that?

Do you refer to your getting something wrong or to Turkish women having the right to wear mini-skirts?

No and no, as far as I'm concerned :-)

So long as a right is not distorted so far as to become a compulsion, of course.
