The (ahem) Glass Box for Thursday
This is the place to comment on tonight's programme.
It's also where I'll be posting all comments today...as I think this will make 999 entries. Emergency!
Here is the latest total (at 1030) for the number of posts by me and comments by us all:
Tomorrow I expect I will have a blizzard of postings but today I will be good.
Also tomorrow - our BIG NEWS. YOU will hear it first right here.
1145 UPDATE:
1330 UPDATE:
We are VERY close to 50,000!
REAL 1330 UPDATE (sorry i jumped 30 minutes earlier) we are 49 away from 50,000. I will do my best to not the moment we go through 50,000, take a pic alongside the time! I suspect I will miss it but live in hope. Later: new photos from Hugh on his travels - the poor man just phoned five times in an effort to get a solid connection from India.
1350 UPDATE:
1412: Fewer than 20 to go!
1420: WHO is it going to be? We are ten comments away from our 50,000th!
But Eddie - unless we are very reserved we will hit the total today !
I rather think we might Jonnie (1) and that is just fine!
Is it time to apply teh brakes....do we have brakes? Maybe deploying parachutes instead....
A quick finger calc, er , 879, plus 1 for jonnie's, makes 880, less 1000, is 120. phew!
120.
that's still more than a 'usua'l day's postings, isnt it?! we can't hang back now!!!! otherwise we'll arrive at 12:20 on Fri with something like 99, 947....
aaaah
n-n
So I'll not post too many so others have a chance
I think that's only fair really
Yes, Jonnie. I think today we all need to go on a diet.
Eddie: Could you kindly provide an update on postings this evening?
The strategy for today, from the number of postings already, and if we want to hit the 50K on the anniversary (i.e. tomorrow) should, I suggest, be to post consistently but not madly, but holding back until after the usual outpourings from listeners on the Glass Box.
Could froggers do this? And then, if Eddie can update us at, say, sometime between 9 and 10, we can pick up the pace of posting (OOh what a lot of p's!) in the evening, if necessary.
Eddie, are you able to update us further just before midnight tonight?
So many questions .......
I'm getting SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited!
Why have we failed so misearbly on the trackback front?
I think we should be told.
And, you're still giving us some pretty fuzzy ....
xx

All I can hope is that my attempt to surf in the coffeeshop tomorrow (whilst waiting for MOT to be done) works. I'd hate to miss out on the early announcement of whatever it is :)
I don't care about the calculations, I just want to have a quick burst on me old banjo!
We've been worried because the younger daughter is in Peru -- but she rang just now (4am her time) to let us know she is ok. Meanwhile I had rung her school and got her A-level results, and she got straight As and she has a place at Oxford and I am *not* coherent and I am not caring for whether we hit 50,000 at the right moment I just had to jump up and down and squeak and be happy and I can't get to the beach unless I go and borrow a big computer so I shall do the squeaking and bouncing here.
Ti-ra-la-la-i-tu! I gloat! Hear me!
OK, I'll go away now. See you later when I have calmed down a bit.
Now all this talk of numbers is all very well but what I want to know is, does Eddie have his Elvis suit ready for the party tomorrow? I can't see the webcam, can anyone have a look for me?
Jonnie: We're onto your tricks!
I know, you want to be Mr. 50K, don't you?
I won't post much here today then either.
Eddie:
"That is just fine"
Okay. So, you've set yourself a personal target - but you're not worried that froggers, too, may have a target?
And as for that Jonnie, we know his game .... :)
Ed @ 8
I would tell you more about trackbacks if I could...but here's the explanation from the user's manual about them.
I'd welcome a translation to help me understand it!
Chapter 8: TrackBacks
Weblog comments still require the use of that particular site's interface and the content is limited to that one weblog unless it is cut, pasted, and posted elsewhere.
Released in August 2002 as both an open protocol and new functionality in version 2.2, TrackBack was designed to provide a means of notification through a small message called a ping that establishes a link between web resources.
This sounds simple, but its potential applications are actually quite broad. To compound matters, many confuse link tracking, as it is implemented in MT and other tools, as the protocol's sole purpose, thereby missing other realms of possibility.
Chris - wow!! that is truly wonderful; we are celebrating RJD's daughters results on the beach too so have brought over some cake and bucks fizz (kindly donated by Molly)
Sorry, I am trying to be moderate, honest guys, but I just have to say to Chris
WELL DONE CHRIS' DAUGHTER!
Have a lovely day, Chris! And tell her from me that she's a very clever girl and has a marvellous dad.
Mr Fish - Congratulations to your daughter!!
Champers on the beach?
*I am not malicious!*
*I am certainly not thatmalicious*
Eddie,
The great man Chris Evans, who presents Drivetime on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Two (weekdays 1700-1900). His blog comments reached 425000 (four hundred and twenty five thousand) in just eight months.
Chris - what wonderful news! Getting my A-level results remains one of the most brilliant days of my life - more than 20 years and 3 children later. The relief, the joy, the prospect of a whole new life opening up.
I'm taking my orders from Sgt Sis and will post no more until this evening. Have a great Thursday, everyone!
I remember being robbed of the first 100th comment to a thread by some sort of html shenanigans.....
Long time gone, loads-a comments sent, a few less shown up....
Remember THIS??

Are we there yet?
Congratulations to fishy Chris and RJD and any other parents of successful A level offspring- and the offspring too of course.

which meaning did you intend, eddie?
Are we there yet?
Are we there yet?
Are we there yet?
Can we stop? I need a wee.
Brilliant, Chris Fish!!!!
Many congratulations! Which college is she going to?!

xx
well done to all those A level folks. I hope you got the grades you were hoping for.
Big Sis (7). Poor eric won't get any sleep if you make him check his comments box at midnight. He needs his beauty sleep.
Congratulations to Chris and RJD's youngsters on their results, and a big sturdy umbrella for Roberto.
Shall we have a sweep for what time we pass the 50,000 mark? Prize is to allowed to be smug until we hit 100,000.
I say between 2:30 and 3pm today.
Joe Palooka: You are a charlatan!
We all *know* that Eddie's Blog is far more dynamic than that of Brother Evans. And, where is Mr. Evans, pray? His last posting was dated 10th August. Something about getting married? Well, Lord Mair wouldn't allow that to stop him ....
Furthermore, since Brother Evans doesn't even deign to post on a daily basis, and the comments on his blog rarely exceed 100 per posting, I do rather think you're telling us a little porky it the statistic you quote.
Don't you think it's time you just gave up?
Chris Ghoti (10) : Whe-heeeeeeey!
* does usual little celebratory dance *
Oh my, your cup runneth over today dothn't it!
Congratulations to Chris's daughter, congratulations to Chris's daughter's dad, and congratulations to Oxford for having such a clever girl joining you soon.
Fifi
Joe Palooka (19) - Joe, I've had a look and no, they didn't amount to anything approaching that number. On a quick examination, I reckon you are wrong by a factor of at least 10. I think you should get a recount. :o)
As I used to say to my parents on long car journeys "Are we there yet?"
Sorry to get all news-y but....
Did anyone notice this, reported yesterday by celebrity blogger 'Rachel from north London?'
.
I thought this might me worth a few minutes of clean air ...
PS
On another matter entirely.
Do you want to hear our favourite presenter groaning under the wieght of polite embaressment and thinking to himself "Why did I ever do this? When will it end? And when do I get my cheque?"
Then why not do yourself an emotional injury and listen again to this weeks edition of ´óÏó´«Ã½7's 'Wireless Wise (.ram file),' the lamest quiz of the week.
Any guesses what the 1000th Blog post title will be tomorrow.
I suppose Day 365 Beach is too obvious.
The Cat:
Well, since it does look likely that we may do as you say, your idea sounds quite good, but I think the betting window will need to be narrower than the one you've posted, or there is unlikely to be an 'outright winner'. And, no, you can't squat on a whole 30 min slot like that and say "I was here first - ner nerdy ner ner".
So I say, revise your slot to max 5 mins, and then perhaps we can all play?
Joe Palooka (19) - Revised estimate for Chris Evans' Blog in a year - 33,200. (and that is being generous).
Hang on...
49934 on the *1330* update?
My watch says it's still only 1305...
Eddie, has you been playing in that TARDIS again?
wichi (3)
re brakes.......all Eddie has to do is give the 'moderators' a bung and they can do the rest. That way he can have control over us all and perhaps 'auction off' 49,999 & 50,000 to the highest bidder/s?
DIY
Calm down Big Sis (28)
The blog statistics for Chris Evans (Radio Two 5pm) were announced on Blue Peter, so they must be true!
This posted at 13.11 p.m.
And now, Eddie, you're hallucinating! 1330? Are all those Elvis's getting to you by any chance?
Whatever you're on, I'll have a glass please!
Stewart M (27):
"Big Sis (7). Poor eric won't get any sleep if you make him check his comments box at midnight. He needs his beauty sleep."
Whatever do you mean?
Eric doesn't sleep.
Well done Chris's daughter. Obviously takes after her dad.
But cheer up ONE and ALL!!
Reasons to cheer:
1. Hey, if the markets loose 'confidence' in all this money the central banks are printing maybe these so called investors will go back to shares!
2. All over the world people with too much brass neck (the market maker - shakers) are losing confidence in their capacity to con the rest of us.
3. Since the bourses are still (in FTSE terms 1000 points) overvalued lets hope the market makers continue to get these attacks of conscience.
(Nils Desperandum tells us the world economy is in good order. But the stock markets and housing markets are still ridiculously inflated. Does Si Worrall really want dishonesty to reign and the FTSE recover to 6,800?)
4. If things carry on this way maybe Al Qieda won't attack America again, Si.
5. We're at the stage where any news to these guys is bad news. They deserve it.
(And we were at that stage when the subprime news got through too. In better mood even our current set of financial crooks could have coped with that 75 billion default (over so many years)).
So, even allowing for 'normal profits' there's another 17 percent of falls to go. But markets won't get that real and honest. So the fat cats will continue to over-value their assets so they get an unfairly large share of the cake.
Another case of America disregarding majority opinion and calling itself democratic.
(In these asset markets price determines asset value (inaccurately) but it also determines how much people can borrow and spend without loss. A booming stock market is like a Widow's cruse. The fat cats inflalte the price of shares to the extent they think they can get away with it. Here's hoping they continue to lack 'confidence'. Si can explain all that better than I, I think, I'm out of practise explainin')
This blog has been passed as non - defamatory and deemed sane (just) by a trustworthy fellow bog standard blogger.
PS It may not be Christmas yet but those market boys are certainly beginning to talk turkey, and get sage (at last) and onioned.
Great
DiW (30) - now that is cunning, but do you really think Mr Mair could be bought?
Eddie:
Should we all shout BINGO!!?
when we reach 50K?
Just helping numbers. Nothing more constructive than that I'm afraid.
Big Sister (35):
I thought I'd cut it down to 2:45 to 3:00 before posting as I had the same thought. However, I had no idea that Eddie had jumped forward half an hour and seen that we were so close.
I think this is far too late a guess, but in the interests of fairness, I'll pick 2:45 to 2:50 which was within my original range. I'll actually be surprised if we don't make it by 2pm.
What a time for there to be a bloggage!
Or is somebody saving up comments so the blogbarrier gets burst in one huge blast?
blog.
In deference, shouldn't 'Malicious' be re - tagged RETURN to SENDER.
SSCat (36) But your post was supposedly sent at 12:58pm. Either you need to adjust your watch or Eddie is not the only one who has been playing in the TARDIS.
H.
Thanks Harry. @ 46??
Eddie, Hello Eddie, Eddie - are you there?
Oh, and SSC, looks like we'll be there afore-ye.
Listening to Eddie Mair on Penrose's link.
Eddie Mair, nightMair, Mair here Mair there Mair everywhere.

Well done Chris' distaff sproglet.
And Chris, you're right to celebrate her success. Be proud and make damned sure that she knows it.
Dare I ask which college? And what she'll be reading?
Damn if we get to 50k early, as long as we get there finally. Winning the race is what matters, not the winning time. You can take this too far. What if the programme tonight has items that generate a massive response into the GB? Is no-one going to comment just in case we accidentally cross the line early? And that's fine for the 'regulars', but what about occasional or new commentators who don't get the plot?
Si.
Well I was going to post something, but I don't think I had better now! Leave it til later?
Big Sister (55):
That's what happens when they switch off the clock up Big Ben; the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s timekeeping goes all to pot.
So, do we think Eddie is actually doing any work right now, or is he just sitting behind a super-espresso watching the blog-count?
This is the Blog

Stewart M (34),
Surely tomorrow would be Day 366 Beach, there being 365 days in a year and tomorrow would be the first day of the second year of the Blog, i.e. it's birthday.
Also puzzled as to why people's comments about it being five past one are entered at two minutes to one etc. Perhaps Eddie's put the frog in the TARDIS to help get all the timings right.
I'm confused. Does this mean you don't want me any more?

Well, "WE" are jonnie (96), that's for sure...
Just wanted to let ´óÏó´«Ã½ PM and the Froggers know that Dean has become a Category 1 Hurricane. While it is not expected to hit Florida, I am monitoring it. In fact, some photos of Roberto next to a Hurricane Map were E Mailed to ´óÏó´«Ã½ PM.
Please let it *NOT* be Joe Palooka
Jonnie - There are a whole load of posts not getting through
I imagine there's a technical hitch up there ...
Thank you witchiwoman. We must be there now so can actually go off and do stuff.
This must be a record. Nearly 100 comments before the programme has even started!
I have posted several times since the last one which has appeared here.
Where are they?
Congratulations to Jonnie, Eddie, Marc, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ techies, the lovely moderators, and to us, the Froggers.
Wha's like us?
Eddie, the suspense .... c'mon, be a pal!
New Blog Prince:
Has Eddie fallen off his chair in excitement?
I see Dean has now been upgraded to hurricane and may hit the Texas coast within 5 days, unless it bumps into the Yucatan peninsula and slows down.
I first started hurricane watching when I used to travel to North Carolina where colleagues were used to having to keep a weather eye out, and occasionally British colleagues were stranded waiting for one to blow itself out.
Predictions for this year seem to be for above average numbers and 3-5 major storms.
Roberto, we'll be thinking of you.
Huzzah! At least I can say "I woz dere" when the blog hit the big 1k/50k mark :)

1. Goodness me, must have misheard a point again.
Still, if Listen Again permits Hansard reinterpretations then Nils Desperandum.
Is the year on year growth in value shown at the link REASONABLE?
2. Shouldn't we e comparing averaged grammars + secondary mods with uncreamed comprehensives?
3. The missionaries were too effective. All that blood and body of Christ stuff I expect
In the crime fiction part of the show:
What was that bloke talking about, what is wrong with women writing violent crime fiction? Because they shouldn't? Because it is a betrayal?
He will probably be suggesting they shouldn't be voting next....
So the young muslim woman with the headphones is not to be prosecuted! What a surprise!
Contrast this with the sentence given to Geoffrey Archer for contempt of court. Ah, but then he was a middleaged white conservative voter - of course!
Val McDermot got caught out, she tried to claim special licence for herself whilst denying it for others!
You'll have to click on 1y (immediately above the graph) at my link to see what I'm on about at (132).
The link, despite my efforts, goes to the first page.
Hey, you and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 oclock news have found someone who thinks the problem is LACK of markets! (In gist: the problem is, these debts not traded, thus no price, therefore damage not known). At which the mind boggles. You can see why they get in such a panic with experts like that.
There is such an obvious strategy available to marketeers if the 'we don't know where the debt is' and we don't know where it is' explanation is what's gripping them that the explantation itself sounds like part of the panic.
(Hint: The debt is at most 100 million quid. You lot have lost us and you 200 billion in Lodon alone worrying about it.)
So panic it is!
Which of course the subprime stuff was in the first place.
Glad to hear some traders think some hedge funds are being very economical .... with la verite.
Glad to hear the minister pointing out the sub-GCSE level of the stats about grammars doing better. I wish you'd considered his explanation before leading with this aspect of the results. Getting more youngsters to do A levels will bring down the progress of the average, and this will only happen in non-selective schools.
mac, as far as I can understand it at all, most of what goes wrong goes wrong because people get into a tissy about it, and people being in a tissy is what makes it go wrong.
So maybe *not* getting into a tissy about it is the least unproductive course of action?
Me, I am planning to break open the piggy-bank and see if I can afford to buy a few bits of Rio Tinto or something, on the basis that if all the scaredy-cats are selling it cheap because they have got into a tissy, now is a good moment to take advantage.
errata: (132) In 'explanations', 'we don't know how much it is' is the other half, not the repetition as posted. Sorry, must be getting into a tissy too.
Chris, hold your nose when you buy Rio Tinto Stinks. Good luck!
Can Eloise Twisk satisfy my vulgar curiousity? Why is there a piece of ambient music on the web with her name? Is she also a musician or has she just imspired one?
mac, you've been in a tissy for at least a week.
I deliberately chose a stinky share, just to wind you up. :-))
My old Granny inherited some shares in South African gold mines (it's a long story) and deliberately kept one of each sort just so she could turn up every time there was a shareholders' meeting within range of where she was, and ask awkward questions about the workers' conditions and what the directors were planning to do to improve them.
Chris,
Congrats to your Daughter, big ones. Maybe it ain't her dad she takes after. ;-) If you're going to give her a congratulatory present of RTZ, I'd wait awhile yet. This dead cat's got some way to fall yet. I'd disregard at least the first 'bounce'.
Of course, I wouldn't touch any extractive industry with a bargepole or a pound note, and that includes industrialised agriculture. Moral reasons rather than profit motive. Surprisingly, some farmland is still relatively cheap, but not where there is any hint of possibility of planning permission for housing. 'Marginal' land and land 'suitable for afforestation' are both still cheap, and survivalists might well be shopping....
Like RJD and others, I'm interested in what and where your daughter will be reading.
Best congrats to all the kids who've come through this A-level wringer (mangle)!

Well done to all especially those who attended the "Secondary Modern" schools the Conservative spokesman kept talking about
During the PM programme today, i was irritated by the emphasis Eddie Mair placed on the juror's religion when describing her as "a muslim woman" who was listening to music on her ipod ..........."under her hijaab". This was the woman who was dismissed from jury service following the discovery that she was listening to her ipod during the murder trial. The fact that she should never have been allowed to participate in such a serious case given her apparent flippant ans apathetic attitude is another matter.
If Eddie's comments were a deliberate attempt to provoke a response from Muslim listeners, then i have to say, it was in bad taste and unbecoming of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to stoop to such a level just to cause some sensation. On the other hand, if the ´óÏó´«Ã½ have decided to use religion as a means of referring to all persons mentioned in news items, then this could be understandable. Would the ´óÏó´«Ã½ now make a point of referring to the only suspect of the Madeline McCann case or the murderers of the brave man killed in Warrington as Christians? I very much doubt it but you are free to prove me wrong.
This type of reporting is irresponsible and only adds to the Islamaphobia that exists in British society today. ´óÏó´«Ã½ employees should be more concientious about what message they are sending out to listeners, afterall, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ are The Standard and should always be mindful of this when conveying and making the news. I am very disappointed.
Chris 140. No, thats me happy. I've always seen capitalism as a spectator sport. At the moment its no bead and the slaves seem to have some sort of chance at the circuses.
Sadly, Ed 141, I think its all but over - they've factored in every adverse possibility except equality and socialism and still left themselves 10 percent up on the year.
Jhannat Vadher (143),
I agree. It's a sad fact that such descriptors are used. We rarely hear someone describes as "Jewish" or "Christian", or, come to it, "Buddhist", etc., but often as "Muslim" or "Islamic".
It would have been sufficient to refer to the lady in question as having concealed her MP3 device in her headdress, or even "Hijab". In the latter case, to describe her as "Muslim" is 'redundant' and gratuitous.
Whatever her faith, or lack of one, she seems to have been definitely in contempt of the court, and it was right to dismiss her.
I'm glad you felt moved to comment.
Assalaam 'alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu.
ed
Jhannat Vadher @143, The point is that if she had *not* been a Muslim she would not have been allowed to wear in a court of law a garment that so obscured her head as to make it possible for the her to sit listening to music instead of to the evidence being presented. If it had been a hoodie, she would have been told to take it off; because she claimed it as a religious privilege, she wasn't told to take it off, and then she abused that privilege. I'm sorry, but in this case the religion *is*, quite precisely, the point.
I think this was sufficiently important to merit the emphasis given to it by Mr. Mair: if someone is going to behave in this way, it *ought* to be noted as abuse of religious privilege, and should be as offensive to her co-religionists as it is to anyone else who wants the defendant in a court of law to get a fair trial.
How do you define dynamic?
Does Chris Evans report on news and current affairs?
Isn't quality more important than quantity?
Jhannet Vadher (143) "If Eddie's comments were a deliberate attempt to provoke a response from Muslim listeners...". I don't think stating that a person is a Muslim ought to be controversial in any context. However, you'll notice that when Eddie Mair mentions Jews in a skewed way they don't respond. Why? I have it on good authority that they stopped listening because of the bias.
Before I forget - what was that male writer talking about? Women shouldn't write graphically about violence or murder?? What?? Its like the Bob Stewart thing all over again!
Warm congratulations to Chris Ghoti and daughter. Oxford is a pleasant place, but beware of morose men in Mk II J*gs.
I'd also like to offer my commiserations to those who had disappointing results and are having to re-think their plans.
Paul @ 147 -- gor you dunnarf generalise, do you?
"The Jews" haven't done anything, you know. *Some* Jews may have stopped listening to PM because they perceived a bias, but I don't think any of *my* family have. You speak for yourself all you like, but don't you go speaking for my-cousin-the-Rabbi, if you don't mind, 'cos she's perfectly capable of speaking for herself. (Oy, is she ever?)
I think that if any Jews use this site on a regular basis they would have certainly commented on the anti-semitic vile discussion which took place on the glass box Friday 27th July, posts 19-20-21-23-24-28-31.
As I said in an earlier post. A bigot is a bigot regardless of how polite they may appear.
I also have to add hypocrisy to that statement.
The Daily Telegraph reported on the year long internal report commissioned by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ which found BIAS within the corporation.
A ´óÏó´«Ã½ spokeswoman said. "This report is about looking forward and how we are going to face the challenges of impartiality in the modern world".
Why should impartiality be a challenge?
Hardly a perceived bias.

Encouraging to see the self-appointed, so-called intelligencia contributing well informed arguments.
