Tonight's sound of summer

Eddie Mair | 13:02 UK time, Thursday, 13 September 2007

comes from Annasee:

"In response to your request, I attach a clip of the sounds of summer recorded in Gibside (Rowlands Gill, Derwent Valley, Gateshead) on Friday, 24 August. Possibly the nicest day of the whole summer. Absolute perfection, clear blue skies, marvellous views, warm, sunny, the mildest of breezes. Lots of bird life, distant traffic noise, sheep, occasional aeroplanes. The estate is an 18th c survival owned by National Trust. Originally built by George Bowes, a coal baron. The gem of the surviving buildings is the Palladian chapel, (with mausoleum underneath, photos of the coffins available in an album in the church, but I know that’s way too much information for you…I just found them fascinating!)"

It looks beautiful Annasee - and if Robert yur SO had anything to do with the recording it'll be spot on.

I hope the ´óÏó´«Ã½ manage to preserve the stereophonic integrity -(on this SOS)

I hear it's what they did - and why they do it - when FM went stereo at great expense in the mid-sixties.

Will the next Sound of Summer be of the culling of cattle, sheep deer etc due to the emergence of foot and mouth yet again?

As the strain may well prove to be 01BFS67 will DEFRA now consider vaccination. After all, ironic as it may seem, Merial in Pirbright were recently producing 30,000.

In August, Anthony Gibson, the National Farmers' Union's director of communications said that the aim [ for vacination ] should be a "once in a lifetime" vaccination but said the UK was "some way away from that". Perhaps NOW is the time to ramp up the research on producing this once in a lifetime vaccination?

They're an extremely well-heeled crowd - presumably not just national Trust visitors?!

I'm sure you must have mentioned it somewhere on the blog but when is Big Ben due to be back? You see I have a great sound of summer, that of our chickens in the garden, but have not had the chance to record them because by the time I get home they have roosted. I want to do it, but it'll have to be the weekend now, and I just know you're going to say Big Ben is back on Monday. This interactive stuff is wonderful, but I can only ineract for a small amount of the time. And then there's the small matter of a six year old and a three month old baby to think about when I get home of an evening. I just can't fit it all in Eddie! YOU'RE PUTTING TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON ME!!! The chickens will be great though.. honest.

Oooh Gibside is lovely! Annasee, had I known you were there -- and not been on my jollies -- I'd have gatecrashed what appears to be a very pleasant wedding "do". (Not sure I'd have been pleased to see George Best though!)

Oh yes please, Carl. We must have the chickens. I love their quiet clucking & general chatter. How many have you got? Make sure you send a photo too.

And what lucky children to grow up with chickens in the family. I've always wanted some, but we have continual foxes here, so I think the outcome might not be too good for the chickens. It's one of my aims when we eventually get to Australia, & I retire & go all Good-Lifey. Hopefully the chickens will also eat all the nasty spiders before they can get to us. Sort of security-guard chickens, in a way. (Do chickens eat spiders, btw?)

What is everybody using to record their sounds of summer with?

I wanted to record the sound of people chatting and working at my allotments...I suppose you've had allotments already, haven't you?

Enjoyed the sound. I think we can guess who was at the harp, but who was the "Lord of the Dance" singer?

Vyle - she was a lovely local lady, whom I'd never met before the day of the wedding (owing to my living about 150 miles away from her)! It was a "challenge" for us both meeting & rehearsing , literally , in the 15 mins available before the ceremony started, for the solos she had been asked to sing. The last one of which we were asked to do the night before. Luckily she knew it, but I didn't. So, "challenge" is probably the best word for it... I don't think anyone noticed, but we were certainly relieved when it was all over.
