It's Monday. It's October. So
to cheer us up I was going to post a few pics of a beautiful location I was at yesterday. Then I thought - no. Make it an illegal quiz!
So - where is THIS?
(I could have made it harder by just using some tree shots but how much of a challenge are people up for?)
Well my first thought was Studley Royal Water Garden, next to Fountains Abbey. But I see their temple doesn't have that dome on top. And guessing you were probably somewhere not so far from London, I dunno. Cliveden? (No idea what it looks like but it sounds like the sort of place that should have an 18thc. temple in the grounds)
Am I close?
The name that comes to mind is
Chiswick House
And if so, I'm glad you enjoyed it Eddie as I spent many happy hours there in years gone by.
It is Stourhead Gardens, near Warminster, Wilts. My proof is and I claim my prize!

Is it:
A) Somewhere on planet Earth with a lake and a bridge
B) On Saturn’s rings
C) Drifting in the mind of a fantastical being, etc?
No, I was wrong, not Chiswick House (I did have doubts given the bridge ....) - it was Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire.
I hope you had a good day, Eddie. Lovely part of the world.
Incidentally, for what it's worth, yesterday I was on the banks of the river Cam cheering on the Cornish gig team who were racing against the University of Cambridge Boat Team. Cornwall won (I know there are frogges who will be thrilled), a lot of beer was drunk, and I found myself appearing briefly on Anglian News (no, not speaking, but cheering and flagwaving). It was a lovely day, with glorious autumn weather.
Hope the rain didn't reach Wiltshire before you had a chance to see the gardens properly, Eddie.
P.S. Congratulations - Friday’s newsletter made it through in time for 9:10am Monday...
Is that two folk on a two bicycles half way along toward the temple. Its a folly really and not a real temple. Its also very pictureskew.
Can we have a clue. Is it National trust (cant get away with truss seems to be malicious) owned?
Looks like Stourhead. Beautiful place.
I hope you enjoyed your trip to Wiltshire.
Best Regards
Otter
I think that's the Thames, near Runnymeade?
BigSis - Wahey!!
Eddie - I've no idea but it has cheered me up. Oddly enough remins me of Petworth but looks completely different. Theres no accounting for synapses.
Did you find the naked bloke groping for his towel in the grotto?
Well it's not a new Beach!
Did you see : this chap when you were there Eddie?
Ooops, this chap should have been a link, getting rusty in my old age, see my name link - not me, yet.
Is that your back garden, Eddie?
Stourhead Gardens it was indeed. Well done Big Sis, Otter and iStephen. It was indeed as lovely as it looks. I have some other snaps I may save for the depths of winter.
Stourhead - lovely - haven't been there in years but now you make me want to go again. Lucky you.

I am never malicious - really. Counts slowly to 5002 (why? - well it just came into my head, must be related to room 502 I suppose. Question is will it give enough time for me to be deemed non malicious again?)
Clever Stephen, Big Sis and Otter - you must know it well.
Lovely snap, Eric. What a pleasant start to October.
STRAPLINES:
PM - for people who can’t spell MP.
Of course it's Stourhead - that view has been my screensaver for years.
Sid
Lovely pic Eddie. Of course I know where it is - my sister lives in Warminster.
..but did you know the Stourhead estate was inhabited by the Stourton family for 700 years before it was bought by the Hoare banking family in 1717.. That's the Stourton family of our esteemed colleague and Today programme presenter Ed Stourton. he tells me there is a 14th century Edward Stourton buried in the graveyard there. Now that's posh. Eloise
And Ed S has been fossicking into his family history recently.
So - was Eddie visiting Ed's ancestral pile? With Ed?
Straplines - Eddie, I work from home so the border between work and leisure used to be blurred. PM is my cue that the working day is almost over so my strapline would be "PM - Time to preheat the oven". S
Eloise (22):
I would make a comment about the name of that banking family in connection with the original name of Threadneedle Street, except I might have to explain it and I feel it might not be suitable for a family blog.
So I won't...
Don't complain, Dr Hackenbush (6) I've just received Thursday's newsletter....
What day did you say it was, Eddie?
Testing
Well it looks so beautiful we've decided to go later in the week. Never been there.
Oh by the way - is it possible to have an answer to 'thegreatgonzo's question on the 'Producers cubicle' picture on the Flickr site?
Chris Jarvis has just been having a look and said he'd like to know the answer?
(22). You had me worried for a moment!
Chiswick House was taken over, in effect, by the people of Chiswick in 1929 from the Devonshires. Thank goodness for inheritance taxes. (There was a deal done).
But at Chatsworth the Duke's head gardener thought the house and grounds were still in the Devonshire family - in 1980! The Duke had 'given him that impression'.
Those old Norman families keep a weather eye out for ways to get 'their' land back.
PM may want to seek ways to expand up to the Today frontier ('AM, the 5 to 6 morning show, iAM the Saturday dawn web patrol and the AM blog for early listener reaction' etc).
And perhaps beyond. (Here's hoping). If only Ed S. and John H. could be found alternative employment.
There's no need to worry about revanchiste Stourtons though. 'Cos they sold it to the Hoares (bankers) before the House was built. So you won't see Ed S. at the window looking at the peasants across the ha - ha.
Respect to Eddie M. and his hugely honorable roots. Sadly I suspect by contrast Ed 'Posh' S. would not take a superintendent's job at Stourhead, but my dad did at Chiswick where the Wyatt Classic Bridge is a pride and joy. (5).(The link is for you)
Its a nice thought though - an added NT attraction. Guided tours by Ed Stourton with John Humphries at the tea urn in the caf. ('I suppose its a tea is it? C'mon now. Yes or no. Can't wait all day. I know that's what you want and what you'll get anyway because you won't tell me clearly and there are 200 people behind you all knowing exactly what they want')
And then PM morning and evening - the best oxymoron on the air.
Nicely composed snap, BTW - very artistic!
Jonnie (28) what was the question?!
Jonnie (28) what was the question?!
Bowood House ??
It's not a temple, it's a folly.
I don't know how you managed to get that shot, Eddie? But that's definitely my back garden in North Wembley.
