More trains

Eddie Mair | 12:32 UK time, Thursday, 4 October 2007

from DI Wyman..

"I am just back from working in Yarm and Darlington and I know Eddie loves trains!

Saw this, 50m long, 6M high, 185,000 bricks and no where to go. Sculpture by David Mach from 1997, very impressive, real in your face art!"

Simply fantastic....never have I had such a lazy lob on for something so heavily brick based.

It's structures like this that make me wish I got into building rather butchery...although I do love to cut stuff up!

Keep up the good work Wyman!

    Hi There!

I have heard a lot about the threshold for inheritance tax to be increased. An I also heard a comment about that there would be a £25.000GBP annual fee for people who are not domiciled in the UK. What does this actually mean. I am resident in the UK but not domiciled since 3,5 years. I work and live with my family, who have the same status as my self, in the UK. If I was forced to pay £25.000GBP annually I would have to borrow money to pay that since 25k is more then my salary when the income tax is paid. Am I better to leave the UK?
(I do listen to radio4 PM at about 17:30 whilst in the car going home from work. If you can comment on this at about that time and maybe explain a bit how this is supposed to work for the individuals would be great.)
N.B. thanks for a great alternative to the other drive time programs.

Nice sculpture, but not as impressive as the real thing. Next year sees the 70th anniversary of the breaking of the world speed record for steam locomotives, still held by A4 Pacific 'Mallard', the type of locomotive depicted in the sculpture. Apparently it is planned to run a special train from London to Edinburgh and back over 2 days in early July using all 3 of the A4s which are in working order, and to line them up at some point in York with Mallard itself, which is not at present fit to steam. Better than bricks.

OK, so the blog doesn't like multiple links in one post (previous attempt submitted OK but as it hasn't appeared, must have been referred for manual moderation)...

    Take 2:

Here are a few more sculptures around the country:

The Somerset Willow Man, easily visible from the M5 around Bridgewater:

Some say it's a rival to a certain sculpture in Gateshead:

    Err.. a big spikey thingy...

At Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton High Level stations, there are a series of 12 black horse sculptures - here's about the only photo I can find:

And talking of New Street, here's what it looked like before a 1960s "architect" ripped everything there out and replaced the roof with a concrete shopping mall topped with a concrete multi-storey car park...

Hi.....next week I will be in the Northampton area!

And as Humphrey Littleton once said, the town got its name because it is a corruption of Hampton of a Norse!

    So it could be interesting!
