Scrooge is a woman
…called uScrooge, onstage at the Young Vic Theatre in London.
It's a South African township version of Charles Dickens. Nigel Wrench explains all tonight with some spirited singing from the cast, performed especially for PM.
Here, in the meantime, is a picture from rehearsals with our two interviewees at the front: director Mark Dornford-May and actor/dancer Mbali Kgosidintsi, who plays the ghost of Christmas present (Nigel says he's sorry it's a bit blurred, but his flash wasn't working properly. You can make up your own joke).

Perhaps I am being either a little bit too PC or sensitve here for complexities of modern South Africa, but does it really need a white director for what is clearly a black cast and presumably a black interpretation of the story.

Nigel N (1) I think that it should simply be the best person for the job, rather than insisting on race/gender specifics. If that means that a white man is the best qualified, they all well & good. It it had been a black woman, that all well & good too...

I agree that it should be the best person for the job — colour, language, religionshould be irrelevant. But, this being South Africa, with its very recent past history, it gives the impression that a white skin, old school tie or whatever else is left from the "old regime" might be useful for the top job.
Rather like the SA rugby team really, and that was discussed on the PM Programme.

I've not heard the report yet, but did the director decide on the show, or was he brought in to direct a show that was organised by someone else?
