Goodness! Is that the time?
mmmmmm.....Somerfield turkey.........did he really advertise a 'brand'?
Alcohol mis-use.
All outlets for the sale of alcohol should have a responsible attitude - or "duty of care" towards their customers. If a person obviously has an alcohol related problem, they should forget their profit motive, and refuse to sell to them. If it can be proven they have flouted this duty of care, their license should be revoked.
Two brands, in fact. We get our bird direct from the folk who rear and pluck it. I could walk over the hill to collect it (but I'll probably drive.) ;-(

I noticed that DIW (2) very sneaky wasn't it.
Did I also hear there is a treatment centre for five-year-old alcaholics? FIVE?!
The BBc itself could make a significant contribution to the solving of drink problems in the under 25s - simple - instruct their Radiio 1 DJs to stop 'bigging up' drinking , binging etcetc as it is protrayed as a way of life.

Okay, I've just heard the piece on the Conservative's proposals for Council Tax. All sounds rather easy. Oh wait; What happens if I move to a larger house (different band) in the same council during the course of the year? Would my rebate the next year be calculated on my original tax bill, the larger, later tax bill or a mix of both? How about if I move out of the council alltogether? How will they be able to keep track of where I live to issue out rebates? Ah, I see, a larger, much more complex database system will be required, with many more local civil servants required to run and look after it all. Oh dear, this'll mean the local taxes will have to increase again to pay for it, unless we decide to vote against an increase.....
Mobius would be proud....
I think alcohol sales should be forbidden in filling stations, motorway service stations and all establishments asscociated with driving. In Finland, hard alcohol is only sold in government-contolled shops, or was last time I was there. AND it"s probably the only country in Europe where alcohol is more expensive than in the UK.
Of course, in the end, control is more to do with the individual and their values than it is about availability or even cost, but by controlling access and cost, we are making a statement and that can surely help, OR?

Recently we were told on R4 that in one of the supermarkets tinned lager costs less per litre than bottled water does; I can't see that being much of a disincentive to choosing to buy the alcohol, and I really can't see it as being any help in dealing with the problem.
David Turner @3, I think there is still a theoretical responsibility for people behind a bar not to serve alcohol to anyone who is clearly unfit through having had more than enough alcohol already, but I don't suppose anyone has lost his job recently for serving a drunk who got into real trouble on the way home and choked to death or something. It seems more likely that a barman who was interested in health for his customers rather than in profit for his employer would lose his job. Bar staff used to say 'you've had enough, why don't you go home?' but I don't think they can be doing that any more.
Lovely to hear a good chunk of interview with Itzhak Perlman and some of the Spring Sonata. I didn't realise he still performed, he was one of my heroes as a teenager!
Thanks all for your comments. Quite a mix on the programme, but the story that hit the nerve was alcohol abuse. There's a separate strand on that, ful of interseting views.
