Just recorded an interview on this story..
and I urge you - if you only listen to one thing in the programme tonight, please listen to this. It's scheduled to run around 17.45.
"The Land Girls - the Women's Land Army who worked on farms to feed the nation during world war 2, are to be recognised by the Government.
A badge commemorating the service of the Land Army and the Women's Timber Corps will be presented to surviving members.
PM has been hearing from one of the Land Girls, Hilda Gibson."
1550 UPDATE: We will post the interview in full on the blog in a while.
502, 502 - I'll put you in a canoe.
A recognition long, long overdue...
502, 502 - I'll put you in a canoe.
I'd just like to echo Eddie's thanks to Hilda and the other Land-Girls...
"Aye, especially the ones wi' big, strong thighs!"
That's enough, Private Fraser.
Just the most briliant interview. Hilda you'r a star.
Human, warm, funny, moving. Sigh. Loved this.
Hilda Gibson. What an extraordinary woman! The interview was excellent, giving her the chance to tell her story in her own inimitable style with such humour. This made the poem even more of a tear jerker!
Better late than never.
We sang this song to 'Land of hope and Glory'
'Churchill hear our plea
Give us our gratuity
we helped win the war
we can do no more
so give us a deal thats fair
we have done our share'
It fell on deaf ears.
But they were the happiest days of our lives.
Maureen
Thanks, Eddie for a wonderful interview with a remarkable lady. It was the best few minutes of radio in ages. I found myself laughing and yet deeply moved. we were given a picture of a long gone age. We owe a real debt to women like Hilda who "did their bit" without fuss.
My guess is she will become a star!
Where is the link to to a 'listen again' for this interview?
Steve (10) you'll find it by looking on the right under "Categories"...9c is Hilda Gibson Land Girl. You'll find more info, the audio, and two of Hilda's poems.
Ah! So it is, thanks! With all the interest in this item, I thought it would be more prominent.
Steve (12) I know what you mean but all blogs update...indeed the post you wrote on was an early warning to help listeners...there was already a more up to date one on the page. We've added a link under categories to help. Hope you enjoy...
Dear Eddie,
I was really moved by the Land Army poem by Hilda Gibson. Is it possible to buy a book?
Many thanks

Hello Debbie (14). I posted somewhere - but I cannot remember where (!) - that Hilda has not had her poems published commercially, otherwise we would happily let you know. We do have some more examples of her work and may post them on this strand (which you can easily access by clicking on "Hilda Gibson-Land Girl" which you'll find under Categories. I'm a bit reluctant to post them all as I'm sure Hilda could make some money for herself from their commercial publication!

This information was forwarded to me by my niece in England. I have lived in Canada for the last 60 years and am now 80 years old. I was a Land Girl and always thought we should have been acknowledged in some small way, so better late than never.
Thank you Hilda, it was lovely to hear your memories and your poem was very touching. Funnily enough, I also write poetry though not about those days of hardship and wonderful comradeship. Perhaps now I will.
