The Glass Box for Thursday
In the PM office we meet every night after the programme in this Glass Box:
We talk about the content of the programme and try to give an honest assessment of what worked and what didn't...the things we missed and the places where our ambitions were not met. THIS virtual glass box you are looking at is where you are invited - indeed encouraged - to be honest about our hour. Members of the production team will read it, and the editor should comment too. Click on The Glass Box link on the right of the page to read previous entries.
On The Markets:
Yesterday's much-heralded co-ordinated action of Central banks had an interesting non-effect on yesterday's and today's market action.
See this:
for some perspective (yesterday, but today looks similar). Take particular note of financial institutions and others in lower central "lagging groups" It doesn't look like the medicine had any tonic effect.
Also note that Citibank and Washington Mutual (two banks) lead the "most active" with rather large losses, along with two more banks (4 out of the top five most active stocks are banks with large percentage declines).
To me, it looks like desperation on the part of The Global Economy. Time will tell.

Good interview that Eddie. Between you and William Haig
You effectively, put him in a position where seemingly, "he felt obliged to answer your questions"
As noted yesterday on the climate thread, we have the Nobel prizes because of a premature obituary.
From Al Gore's acceptance speech.

"non-effect"
Not true...
The Mosteiro dos Jer贸nimos* was funded by a 5% tax on eastern spices - which gives some idea of how big that trade was in the 1500s. (I believe cloves, cinnamon and pepper were excluded from the deal.)

Your studio floor goes down hill.
Launch the lifeboats - she's sinking!

Do you mean it stoked the panic?
Possibly.

Of all possible committee reactions to any given agenda item, the reaction that will occur is the one which will liberate the greatest amount of hot air.

Burying bad news -
Odd that the new much greater figures for illegals working in the security business came out right at the end of this parliamentary session.
