Fashion in the spare room.
"Here's a snap" - writes Nigel Wrench - "taken in Tim Soar's spare room.
Mr Soar is the dj turned menswear designer (also seen below inspecting some quilting sewn by an intern) who's last on the schedule for London Fashion Week, next Wednesday evening. Mr Soar is on PM this evening talking about a collection designed and largely made at his home in Hackney, east London, with the help of three assistants.
How do you impress fashionistas at the end of a gruelling schedule of hemlines, shoulders and Champagne?
On the catwalk, he tells me, expect trousers made out of suit lining and some artfully creased t-shirts. Would you wear them out and about?
On PM he talks too of the impossibility of launching your own label without having a substantial amount of money to fall back on.
Because at its heart, London Fashion Week is about money. It's a high-end trade show. Around the flounce and flash, the British Fashion Council says something like £50-million of business will be done, recession or not.
The Council quotes research by Mintel which says the UK designer fashion market for adults is now worth £1.9-billion each year, recession or not. Worth sewing for."
