Is your Xbox chipped?

So big news this week alongside the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the news that Microsoft have stopped the Xbox live online gaming service on between 600 thousand and one milion consoles Check the story from .

Is that you? Or do you know someone with a chipped Xbox? Microsoft say the consoles still work but online play is disabled.

This is to try and stop the pirating that has plagued the music business and is starting to infiltrate games too. But leading voices representing gamers say that modding or chipping of the Xbox is done by a lot of people in order to protect the expensive games they have bought (average £40) which reside on fragile discs. If scratched thats your money down the drain. Gamers have complained that they should be allowed to copy games to a hard drive for back up purposes in a similar way to the new rules regarding the copying of music to mp3 players.

Is it just coincidence this happens as Call of Duty is released? Do you agree with Microsoft? Or should peeps be allowed to copy games they have already bought for safetys sake? Think twice before going to the computer fair for that dodgy add on! What do you think? Get involved, leave a comment.

I've changed my stance on piracy as i've got older. I think piracy is wrong as it's technically stealing something that alot of time and money has been invested in. If you cannot afford something you want then you have a choice. Work harder for it or steal it. I know what i'll be doing.

I'm a student so I cant afford to pay for a new disc everytime the origional gets a scratch.
I spent enough cash when I brought my 360, games and xbox live subscription. I should be able to back up my games to save myself some cash.
If microsoft offered us a better option then I'm sure we would all take that route.
Obviously Bill Gates pockets arent fat enough!!

If you are going to buy a games console, you need to expect that there will be costs involved in that. Games do cost money to make, and the work that goes into that before you even get to buy it is immense. The least someone can do is buy the game properly.

You don't buy fake consoles, why buy fake games?

These people took the risk of getting caught when they chipped & now they've been rumbled so they can't complain at the end of the day, it could have been worse their profile could have been banned too.

I think they should get banned for piracy but thats not gonna stop them from getting pirated games. If your like some people you have two 360s one for pirated games and one for going on xbox live so if you really wanna get online you can.

i'm a games dev so its obvious that i'm against piracy. Its absolutely infuriating to put hard work into a project for 2+ years only for some broke plums to steal your work. Despite the games industry coping with the recession there are still mass lay offs and piracy does not help at all. Piracy kills innovation and creativity in games as publishers are less willing to take a gamble on games that are not the usual shooters, beat em ups etc. Some people pirate games and still claim they are gamers - thats purely stupid talk.

"I could go on all day about Microsoft, 3 Xboxes now have ring of death, 5 games scratched, and they ban people after Call of Duty came out to make more money. Also you can't cancel membership, I had to change my credit card because every time I rang them up they said there canceling system is broken grrr!! Has't Bill Gates got enough money? Priacy will lead to the death of games like call of duty. Students say they can't afford this or that, you managed to buy an xbox in the first place, you also always manage to go out on the weekends and burn money on drink. Scratched disks are you own fault. I've neve had a disk scratched and that is because I put them back in their case when I'm finished with them. Call of duty modern warfare 2 was far from expensive. I got mine for £20 at makro!
