Milibands find lost Russian relative

Richard Moss | 10:55 UK time, Sunday, 11 October 2009

David Miliband MPI couldn't resist a quick blog on some Miliband-related news before the start of the programme today.

Revealed -

This all surfaced when his brother Ed appeared on a Russian radio phone-in about climate change.

One of the callers took him aback by describing herself as Sofia Davidovna Miliband, saying "I am your relative; I am the only one left."

The presenter clearly thought he'd tapped into the compulsory insane caller, and cut her off.

But .

The Octogenarian academic was part of the Miliband clan that emigrated to Russia.

The British Milibands great-great grandfather was the brother of Sofia's grandfather.

Both had been born in Warsaw in Poland but while Ed and David's relative ended up leaving for Belgium then Britain, Sofia's grandad had moved east to Russia.

Sofia thought she was the last of the Milibands so has been taken aback to discover that the UK Cabinet includes two of them.

Ed and Sofia met up in Moscow after the programme.

I'm tempted to think they may have had more in common than you might expect.

Sofia grew up under a left wing regime opposed to the excesses of captialism, but then so did Ed and David.

After all they were raised by - an avowed Marxist and opponent of big business!

I wonder what Sofia makes of New Labour?
