In "The Diary of a Provincial Lady", by E.M.Delafield, published in 1930, the main protagonist has a cook, parlourmaid - on one occasion, when parlourmaids are difficult to find, there is for a short time a house-parlourman - gardener and governess. She also has a diamond ring which spends a lot of time sitting in a pawnshop.
Complain about this post"I wear red and think regretfully of great-aunt's diamond ring, still reposing in back street of Plymouth, under care of old friend the pawnbroker."
I find it a very funny book. It was serialised by Radio four a few years ago
