joan and other things
So this Saturday we have the pleasure and the privilege of having Joan Bakewell as our studio guest. She's a grand dame of broadcasting so I want you all to behave in her presence - I certainly intend to.
And yes, I know, I have just ended that sentence with a preposition, but it allows me to make my way seemlessly to my next point.
It is about the word 'to'. Paula, one of our listeners, wrote to me in desperate tones about my pronunciation of the word 'to'. It makes alot of people angry because apparently I say 'ter' instead of 'to. I do promise that this week I shall make a special effort to say 'to' in a way that is pleasingly 'to' all of you. Ok?
Just don't go the whole hog on me and do what one listener to Broadcasting House did which was 'to' phone the Listeners Log and complain about the way I say the word 'the'.
There is only so much criticism a girl can take.
'bye for now.....
Help! I'm a malingering snorer - so exactly what is a "mandibular advancement device"?????
What exactly does one look like?
Is it surgically fitted?!
Where can I get one?????
HELP!
Complain about this posti've never had a problem with a human partner snoring, but my cat snores. it's become a problem in the last couple of years as she's become older and sleeps more deeply. my cat, called Cat has also taken to 'singing' at about 2/3/4am in the morning. between the 'singing' and the snoring, i'm left really tired. the cat is fine.
Complain about this postDear Fi,
your great programme seems to be turning into that dreadful one called Home Truths. You have had a coupld talking about snoring , then a man in a cab about philosophy. It is going to get worse? Please stick to your original format with interesting journalists etc .
You have the perfect radio voice full of wit and irony. You cheer me up on a damp Satuday morning.
Arabella.
Complain about this postYour story on snoring was fascinating. You are absolutely correct to say that it can seriously disrupt a marriage - it still is! You asked about the effect on partners...My wife started snoring when she was pregnant with our children. The noise would penetrate walls and could wake me up across a brick wall. Interestingly now that our children are 3 and 6 they can all snuggle up together and sleep calmly through the noise while their dad has to retreat to the end of the house - so maybe it is soothing for the children.
But please please please give some more information about a 'mandibular advancement device' - how does one get one, who does one contact - dont leave everyone hanging there...
Complain about this postplease can you give the me information you gave regarding cures for snoring as my wife is talking about divorce proceedings if I carry on snoring.

Snoring!
My husband sometimes snores. When I wake him up to stop him saying 'You're snoring!' he replies with 'Who's snoring?' Always confuses me as there are only the 2 of us in the bed.
Complain about this postAbout snoring.
Complain about this postI used earplugs for 17 years. very effective.
I did think that Joan was a little unkind to Zeno of Citium - the founder of stoicism. The ancient stoics beleived in tolerating things that cannot be changed so as to save their energy to make their lives happier. So if a storm destroys your house, don't rail againts the gods - get on and rebuild your house (then turn down the thermostat to reduce global warming).

It seems that you, or your producers paid attention to my, or somebody's complaint about adding background music to speech a week or two again. I don't have time to listen every week or through a whole programme, but I heard enough this morning to notice the volume being turned down when a speaker began talking (though not quite fast enough in one or two cases).
Thank you very much. It makes a big difference to someone whose hearing mechanisms have diminished capacity to segment speech from background sounds.
In one case you did it very well, and I wished you hadn't: there was delightful harp music behind one of your speakers, and the harp music, though played very softly (thanks) was so good that I paid no attention to the speaker. I don't even remember who it was, or what he/she was talking about. Whether that is an argument for or against playing totally irrelevant music behind speech I don't know, but on this occasion, a very rare one, I enjoyed it.
Incidentally, Jack Liebeck, whose grandparents Hans and Pam are very good friends and taught me mathematics many years ago, lost the debate about creativity and the Suzuki method!

I have just listened to Joan Bakewell's patronising response to Nickie's description of her "angel" experience. I have long admired Ms Bakewell, as a beacon of intelligent understanding of the world about her, but her response is so typical of a certain type of "rationalist" - when they encounter something they don't understand, or which doesn't seem to fit into their world model, they dismiss it as non-existent. She added to the insult by saying that this non-existent experience was very important.
Can she not break through her prejudices? The experience was obviously real. Something needs to be explained.
Complain about this postHeard with much interest the comments about snoring, and sympathize with the couple you featured. I too suffer from sleep apnoea (a frequent cause of snoring) but of the type which allows my throat to close up totally. My body then wakes me up, taking me from the fourth to the third level of sleep. This can happen a hundred times an hour or more, and effectively means that I get no proper sleep at all. I have a MAD, but because I live alone I have no means of knowing whether I make the loud noise (snore) when my body wakes me up and allows me to breathe again. Doctors still don't know or care about the affliction, and there are very few sleep clinics available - and then only at great cost, for hiring/acquiring a CPAP mask. It is a massive problem nationwide, and the NHS doesn't know or care, aparently.
Complain about this postHello Fi,
Complain about this postI'm another chronic snorer - terrified to fall asleep on long haul flights etc. More details about the MAD please. Can you e-mail me? I'll be away for a couple of weeks so won't hear the programme which, incidentally, I much enjoy. Thank you for your snoring piece - it could be a life-saver for me!

Good Programme. Couple of crits.:
How did Nicky get down from the tree?
Why no repost to Bakewell big statement about missing angels when paraglider first came undone? My answer? - Our world would be pointless even non-existant if everything was sorted before it happened.
Complain about this posti cannot get in contact with the british snoring.co.uk - only mail article
Complain about this postWhere can we obtain a mandibular advancement device please...Many thanks

Saturday Live
It is great to hear programmes about people and lives and living rather than just politics and news. The articles in the programme are often captivating and moving. I do like the idea of life philosophies, we can learn so much from the motivations and inspriations of the people we usually just find compounding the traffic jams around us.
However I do find the presentation of the programme slightly too informal and unorganised. It has elements of a children's saturday morning show, and can be slightly condenscending; being probably one of your younger listerners (in my 20's), this is not something I expect of Radio 4. The chat between articles is often pointless, I'm not that interested in Radio 4's strategic planning meetings due to happen this week or how the presenters meet their time checks. It is notable at 10 o'clock where Excessive Baggage has a much more professional presentation.
Good programme, but could be great.
Complain about this postHello Feeg Lover,
Philosophy for living? The secret is this:
Complain about this postDon't mind what happens. Whatever happens,
don't mind. If you mind, you react, if you react
you set up friction, possibly even aggression.
Ultimately, whatever happens was meant to happen. This does not mean you acquiese to evil. That which you see to be wrong, take action to remedy. But do it in calmness and with peace in your heart. That's it.
David Hale -it's called sleep aponia with which I have been diagnosed. If so I now have to inform the DVLA as if I have an accident my insurance would be void and if I kill anyone I would be guilty of manslaughter.
Complain about this postTo get treatment you have to go private as there is a 12 month waiting list for the mask and equipment you describe, so to continue driving you are forced down the Private route.
Whether the "ban" is voluntary until you get treated I will find out when I ring the DVLA tomorrow. The must be a procedure otherwise those that rely on driving for a living, sleep aponia appears to be the equivalent of a Drink Driving Ban.
PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE TO GET
"THE mANDIBUL ADVANCEMENT DEVICE">
MANY THANKS
