Ghost hunter

  • Becky Vincent
  • 22 Dec 06, 05:05 PM

Tom Rannachan has been working as a psychic medium and ghost hunter for 7 years.

His grandmother was a medium and she taught him everything about the spirit world. By the time he was 10 he could see spirits all the time – hazy and transparent figures – which he simply had to learn to live with. Tom says that 70% of the cases that come to him can be explained entirely rationally, but there are many where he can feel a ghostly presence. It’s his job to persuade the spirits to move on.

    Hi Tom,
    in a geneva hotel room
    I awoke suddenly
there was a shift in the atmosphere
I felt pushed back into the bed although there was nothing/no one there - I couldn't move
Then for what seemed ages, it was like I had stuck my head out of the car window whilst it was travelling at speed - the sound and sensation of strong wind going past.
Then just as suddenly, it stopped.
    What could it be?
I checked for air conditioning vents etc.....
    Thanks,
    Fran

On a more serious note, people like Tom really ought not to be taken seriously. His comments are totally without any sort of scientific basis. And if there really are Poltergeists, Ghosts, whatever...they must have some scientific reality, some physical form. You can't get away with saying "they moved on" or "the power of prayer" without fully explaining in very detailed, scientific terms what you mean. Sorry Tom, I think you'e delusional.

When my father was dying my sister and I independently heard chatter and laughter coming from his bedroom several times. As we approached his room it would stop. A nurse in the room did not hear this.
We did not know the other had heard this, but eventually I admitted I had heard it and my sister said she had too. We asked the lay preacher who visited us and the nursing organisation which helped us and they both said they had heard of this experience from others in the same situation.
The preacher put it down to people on 'the other side' preparing a welcome.
Dad was one of the few really good people I have met in my life. I like to think the explanation was true.

Hi Tom, sorry I did not achnowledge you. I had problems getting on to the blog when talking about my Dad.
I have another thing I would like to tell you.
Last Summer one of my best friends killed himself. A few days later I was sitting in my garden in despair when his voice shouted my name into my ear.
It was strong, quite stern but not angry and seemed to be full of life. It moved me greatly. Have you heard of this before? Regards Joanne

Tom mentioned how one may rejoin departed loved ones when one moves on. It sounds a comforting idea to a pining widow drawing towards the latter part of life. But what if the departed beloved husband had also been happily married to his first wife who predeceased him? How could the widow possibly find comfort in the idea that her loved one was waiting for her if she thought that he had been reunited with his first love?
It's a minefield of suppositions for one who needs evidence as well as comforting ideas. Many people know Love only in terms of a personal relationship and do not relate it to a Universal concept, principle or deity. Are you saying that belief, trust, faith or visualisation is all that is needed to make a cherished idea into a reality? Otherwise by what path do you direct people to directly experience the necessary evidence to know the reality you expound?

    RE: Fran.

    Hi Fran.
I always get loads of emails asking me about this.
What happened to you sounds to me like 'sleep paralysis' or 'hypnopompic paralysis' Fran, which is basically a natural occurence that happens when we wake up and our body is still 'asleep'. The hormones our body secretes to stop us acting out our dreams while we sleep causes the muscles to relax like this. This can also be accompanied by hallucinations too which makes the experience terrifying and can convince the poor person they have someone or something sitting on their chest.
However the sensation of travelling at speed while hearing a strong wind in your ears for a while fascinates me.
In my opinion your experience is probably due to natural causes and nothing to worry about.
Have a lovely xmas and lots of peaceful sleeps!

    RE: Yvonne O'Reilly

    Hi Yvonne.

I find there can be many different reasons spirits refuse to move on. For instance being attached to something here.

People in the spirit world have the same personality traits they had throughout their physical existence - some can be just plain stubborn and seem to want to hang around. In that case there is absolutely nothing I can do for them to be honest and the people in the physical world who approached me just have to learn to co-exist with them.
    Thanks Yvonnne.

I'll try and answer more soon and will try and get through as many emails as possible!
Oh yes, to answer a question - I NEVER charge for mediumship or investigations - Only a donation to the person's charity of choice.

    Thanks everyone,
    Tom

Hello again folks! Escaped from the mayhem of xmas at our house for a few moments to try and answer some more posts.

    RE: Matt Flanagan.

    Hi Matt,

I totally understand your comments Matt, and to hear someone like myself speaking about hauntings, poltergeists & the afterlife must sound crazy to many rational minded people. It's true that myself and many other psychics, mediums & paranormal investigators can't provide the scientific proof of spiritual contact that would convince everyone.
All I can say is that to the many people who I've met throughout my life who have personally experienced the phenomena in their homes or received a personal message of comfort from a medium, the experience does feel real to them and hopefully helps them on their journey through this life in some way.
I couldn't personally explain in any detailed scientific way how an entity can move on through the power of prayer (I'm not bright enough to be honest!) but I would hope that someday someone could give me that answer too.
I can only give my own personal viewpoint of each situation as I experience them and I know I could be wrong and everyone involved needs help!
Maybe myself and other people who have these experiences are delusional but each experience does seem very real to us at the time. All I can say is I hope and pray we (the spiritual community) are correct as the afterlife seems such a beautiful place, whether it is the work of our overactive imaginations or reality.

Have a lovely xmas and hogmany mate!

    Tom

    RE: Joanne Barton

    Hello Joanne,

Your experience with your dad's death is very common Joanne. Many many people email me with similar experiences. I was at the death bed of someone very close to me earlier this year and as he reached out to the wall behind us I distinctly saw the figures of some people in spirit reaching back, surrounded by light. As he drew his last breath the figures seemed to dissolve as he crossed over.
I am personally convinced that when the physical body dies we are helped by spirit.
Some may say this is the mind playing tricks to help us with the shock of losing someone close (Maybe it is?) after all, we are usually sleep deprived during the last sad hours. But my own opinion (especially after that day) is that we are being cared for through the transition between lives and maybe the voices you heard were indeed spirits.
Your other experience in the garden is also a common one. I noticed you said you were in despair and maybe you subconsciously wanted to hear your friends voice? - Whether it was actually your friend or your imagination I personally don't know because I wasn't there but I can tell you that this is a very common occurence after losing someone and whatever the persons belief system it does seem to give comfort.

Thanks Joanne & have a nice xmas.

    Tom

I'd just like to thank all the lovely team who looked after me before, during and after the show on Saturday. I genuinely appreciate their help and sincerely hope my own personal viewpoints didn't offend anyone out there.

I listened to Tom Rannachan and I was very impressed with what he had to say. I have viewed many psychic programmes on the T.V. and whilst I find them very interesting I would very much like to see some programmes on the philosophy of eternal life and the hereafter. Particularly, I would like to hear some people's thoughts on reaping as you sow and karma. I feel sure this further step on the subject would be welcomed by many who find the present survival evidence becoming rather stale or even boring.

There are many disagreements within the circles who believe in the existence of other dimensions about many aspects of the afterlife. For instance not everyone accepts reincarnation.

I personally would like to know if the composition of a medium's bodily cellular structure is different in any way from ordinary persons. I would also like to know if it is true that a disease can only be passed on to people of a lower spiritual standing. I am quite certain that mediums themselves would disagree on quite a few aspects of philosophy too. Could you not have a couple of mediums in the studio to ask their opinion?

When I first heard you had a ghost hunter/psychic on the show I groaned. But I must say I enjoyed listening to Mr Rannachan immensely. His humour and down to earth sceptiscism took me by surprise and lightened my mood. He didn't seem to take himself too seriously and fitted in with the show well.
I am completely sceptical of all mediums and psychics and have no belief in the theories they put forward but he seemed very upbeat and did argue his case for a supposed afterlife in a very informative and light hearted way.
I will never be convinced and do believe psychics and their beliefs should not be taken too seriously but this fellow was very entertaining and obviously believed wholeheartedly in his theories.
Thank you Radio 4 for finding such an entertaining guest.

    RE: Mrs Lovatt,

    Hello,
In my personal opinion real love transcends the physical world and even someone who was married several times will be reunited with those he/she truly loved in in this stage of life.
Through my experiences with spirit, the physical side of a relationship seems to have no relevance in the afterlife, only the emotional tie seems to bind us together. I believe that even those who have been in many relationships will be reunited with those they truly shared the emotion of love with.
Throughout my own life I have seen and experienced the afterlife as an everyday reality and I guess I will never be able to give 100% proof to every person in this life. But through visualisation and prayer I believe anyone can be a little bit closer to heaven and get closer to the reality myself and many others like me experience. Just my point of view though.

Thank you for a great question and hope you had a wonderful xmas Mrs Lovatt.
    Tom

Thanks everybody. Hope I've managed to answer all your queries to the best of my (very limited!) ability.
