Public Toilets

Val Swanick wants to see the public loos in Tenbury Wells reopened.

Few things are more frustrating than being caught short in a small market town on a cold, windy day when you don鈥檛 want to have to pretend that you want a lime and soda at the local hostelry just so that you can use their customer only facilities.

Not only in Tenbury Wells, but Malvern Hills District Council also closed toilets in Malvern & Upton upon Severn.

They closed Upton upon Severn toilets in spite of a covenant on the conveyance which states they have to keep the toilets open & maintained at all times.

A full history from before the closure:

The people of Tenbury Wells should arrange a time and date to visit their local council office's toilets together - a mass p****-in should perhaps make the council reconsider.

This morning you have mentioned two matters that caught my attention: profound advice to the children, and (separately) public lavatories.
Perhaps you'll allow me to impart one piece of advice that will bring the two together..?

I am proud of having taught my two sons just one thing of any use, but my God it is useful!

"Never use a public lavatory without your footwear".

I hope it helps others as well.

The best public toilets anywhere, ever, are in Biggar, on the road to Edinburgh: spotless, immaculate, loved, cared for and a completely reliable pee stop. Nice little town, too.

Can I recommend a Uribag portable urinal - available in male and female anatomically shaped versions. Perfect to keep in your hand bag and use at your private convenience!

My son has had childhood Hereditary Pancreatitis for 20 years now and had his Pancreaus removed. It leaves him with no digestive system, one result is that he has Steatorrea, a bit like dihoear. (sorry about the spelling) He gets round town by knowing where the toilets are and to close them is very difficult for him. He also has chronic pain projectial vomitting diabetes and depression. But the PCY said he is not medically vulnerable, so what is. There's a thought for your programme to look at!

This not a phenomina of purely small market towns. I am a Driving Instructor in the West Midlands and have to programme my day around being able to visit, or even find a public toilet, they are just so few and far between.
Thank God for McDonalds is all I can say.
I believe a Bus Driver was sacked in Birmingham for having to answer the call of nature. How can this be allowed in a so called modern society. Ok if you're young and can last all day.
    Got to go now !!
    Bye

While standing in a queue for the ladies loo at the Globe Theatre an Israeli lady told me that in her country they had passed a law that when new toilets are built there have to be twice as many ladies toilets constructed as men's toilets - makes sense. Having married a Dutchman with the surname Looman I seem to have an affinity to stories about loos! However, in Holland public toilets are not provided and one has to visit cafes or department stores if in need of a toilet.
    Great programme this morning.

I, too, would like my local toilets reopened. Why do local/government bodies think that no one needs to go to the toilet when they are out? I now use various pubs and coffee bars whenever I am out shopping. I usually ask before using. But, the lack of facilities in shopping malls does stop me from visiting these places following an extremely upsetting occasion when I failed to make it in time.
Having more pay toilets would seem one option as the local argument is that it is too expensive to pay someone to drive around the various local (Wiltshire) small towns to clean them!
I think every one should campaign to save existing toilets and encourage new ones to be built. Wales has a great selection even in remote country roads you find them. I might move there!

I do feel very strongly about the closure of these beautiful old toilets. I am sure they could be franchised with dedicated staff who keep them clean put flowers in - certainly in the ladies and have them manned all during opening hours. A charge would have to be made of course and some people would probably chaf at this but the facilities provided would be far outweighed. I am probably living in a world that will never return when the attendant would be there for years and you would have built up a relationship.
