This week's Top Tips have split in two. We asked Sushil K Dade to contribute to our weekly post and he got a bit carried away so we thought he warranted a post all of his own. Sushil is currently the producer of Radio Scotland's The Jazz House, Wednesday nights 8pm, pop pickers.
Over to Sushil:
Taken By Trees - East of Eden (Rough Trade)
This was the first CD I played in my newly bought R Reg Pillar Box Red Diesel Ford Fiesta a few days ago...(nb other cars are available...Ed) Imagine Leonard Cohen and Nico lost in the Indo sub-continent with Camera Obscura vocal stylings coming to their rescue and you may get some idea of this wonderful disc which was recorded in Pakistan. The production is post-modern with plenty of cut/paste which works really well with the organic impression, and the fragility in the main voice is a real treat driving along the mean streets of Glasgow in my dub mobile...
Portico Quartet - Isla (Real World Records)
I was lucky enough to produce a session with this group for the Jazz House programme a year or so ago...the band use a tantalizing instrument known as a (looks like a wok and sounds like a baby steel drum!)...if you like your jazz soaked in Pharoah Sanders treatment drenched with a dose of Philip Glass this is the ultimate for refreshing tired modern minds...beautiful artwork too and adding to the treasures of the Real World catalogue.
(DVD)
An extraordinary film out now on DVD capturing two great masters of improvised musics in a disused sugar factory in Germany. The emotional content of Glennie and Frith's pieces reaches a climax during 'A Little Prayer' which is worth watching for this scene alone...inspiring to the highest order and captured with breathtaking cinematography. You can catch a rare screening of this movie for FREE as part of this year's on Sunday October 4th at the CCA in Glasgow.
Vic Galloway
Presenting his Monday night show on Radio Scotland, and Wednesday nights on Radio 1.
Vic's choice: Good News, the debut by , a religious-themed LP by an Edinburgh artist with a great turn of phrase and melodic suss. The LP was mixed by the legendary Kramer, who during the 80s and 90s worked with Butthole Surfers, Galaxie 500, Bongwater, King Missile...
Stephen Duffy
Currently presenting The Jazz House on Radio Scotland, Wednesday nights.
Stephen's choice: The new album by English jazz singer - 'A Modern Art'. It's got everything I love about great music; funky basslines, hot horns, wit, panache and you accept every word she sings as if it were pure gospel.
Paul McFadyen
The LONG awaited Sub Focus album on . Three years in the making and with many postponed release dates, it finally hits the shelves on 12th October. It's been well worth the wait as it's jam packed with the big dancefloor drum n bass that SF has become known for with also a few wanderings into downtempo territory taking in old skool jungle, dubstep and electro house.
Nick Dempsey
has been a-rocking and a-rolling on my mp3 player this week. Quality rockabilly collection, featuring many weird and wonderful songs later covered in psychotic style by The Cramps. Some well known, some not so well known, all good though!
TV legend Parky was in Glasgow for the in June.. While he was in town he popped into ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland for a special show on The Jazz House featuring some of his favourite music and a chat about jazz, Nina Simone, music on television and more.
We filmed the interview and you can watch edited clips here now:

They performed three tracks on the show and we filmed "Cage The Songbird" which you can watch here now:
Weekly post going randomly round the office seeing what music people are digging....you guessed it, this week.
Nick Dempsey aka me
A recent tune I have been 'caning' in my DJ sets is new on DFA, - We Just Won't Stop. Daft good vibes old skool rapping over a backing stolen from (also very good!)
Mr Ricky Ross
Currently presenting a second series of the excellent Americana show Another Country, Radio Scotland, Tuesday nights. Ricky's choice: "The new album by J.Tillman, Year In The Kingdom. An album you will play right through until the end. Gentle, haunting and original."
Paul McFadyen
new album "Bambaata Eats His Breakfast" on . Continuing the theme from his last album , Landstrumm once again goes for the jugular with more raved-up dubstep shenanigans. Regular collaborator MC Profisee pops up on two tracks. We filmed him in session a while back, if you're feelin' geeky you can see how he does it.
Bobby Sieler, Radio 1 Content Assistant
Absolutely loving the new Fat Freddy's Drop album 'Boondigga and the Big BW'. New Zealand's #1 band have released another beautiful mix of down-tempo sounds that splice together Portugese pop music, Banghra beats, French cool and their own distinctive Pacific Island vibes.
Mandi Freeman, Producer, Vic Galloway Show
- Stand Off EP is worth checking out. Released on 21st September, this duo do scuzzed up tunes with shades of Sons and Daughters and the Cramps.

Edinburgh-based MC and producer was in the building on Wednesday night to present a special edition of Vic Galloway's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Introducing show on Radio 1. We grabbed him and asked him to pick one song that meant a lot to him and the reason why. He chose "Don't Worry" - listen below to find out why.

Edinburgh-based producer has built a reputation for high quality electro-house numbers with a sprinkling of rave magic.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Four has made a bit of a specialty of historical music docs recently, with sometimes excellent results - Do it Yourself: The Story of Rough Trade was one of those. Charting the story of one of the most important labels in British music, it was fascinating watching how the socialist ideals of the 1970s slowly became corrupted by success in the 80s. Some great music, I was particularly entertained by quirky female band who I'd heard of but never heard before.
Very smart of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Four to show another programme on the same night with full length versions of most tracks they've used for clips. There's nothing more annoying than seeing amazing old footage of a band and then it cuts to a talking head after 30 seconds. But when you know you're getting the full thing right after you don't mind.
NB as usual with iPlayer stuff this will expire in 7 days, get watching...
