The FA have McClaren - what about us?

Post categories: ,Ìý

One of the things about my role here as "head of the future" is while almost everyone else is totally focused on the World Cup, I spent half of today talking to colleagues about what we do afterwards.

We hadn't really thought there was life after July 10th, such is the way Germany has occupied every waking hour. But today we wondered - what do we do once the trophy has been handed over? Even the FA have worked that one out now!

The list of tasks is already pretty long so there's no time for much of a rest - last week's plans for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport and the current are both rather important for us.

Hopefully if you’re reading this you also think so....

On the subject of web 2.0 and bbc.co.uk, next week I and some of my team will be heading to leafy Kingswood Warren, the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s research and development HQ, where we'll consider what we should do on the web in 2009.

Don't panic. We're only spending a day there! But there's sometimes nothing worse than a bunch of ´óÏó´«Ã½ people sitting around trying to work out what the audience wants. So feel free to tell us what you'd actually like to see on the site in three years. We’re free to be radical so don't think of barriers just go for it.

I'm already loving some of the ideas in the comments to Alex's entry and if you need inspiration have a look at the , which is connected to this project.

The celebrates one of the other services we help run. I still have a memory of first using Ceefax at a relatives' house in the late 1970s and I'm sure it's a moment which set me on the path to what I do now. I just couldn't believe I could control what I wanted to watch.....

But times change and one of our main priorities is to persuade the Ceefax audience to turn to digital platforms - web, mobile, and interactive TV-based - since the analogue signal is to be switched off and sometimes you need more than four paragraphs of concise text....

A bit like the end of Grandstand this feels like evolution not revolution but do you still use Ceefax, despite all the other digital options? If so, what's missing elsewhere? And if you have stopped using page 301 or never have then why?

Have a good weekend. My main aim is to stay ahead of our editor at the top of the office as the Premiership closes for another year. Wish me luck. I will just love it if I beat him. Remind you of anyone?
