Music News at SXSW - So we made it....

To be honest, there was very little panic in the end. No storms, no cancellations, no being stuck wandering around Boots in a Gatwick departure lounge rubbing our noses on the bonnets of those sports cars that they always seem to be auditioning in airports these days (at £50 per raffle ticket).

The only problematic bits were the in-flight entertainment system breaking down every thirty minutes (I watched the start of All The Presidents Men five times - I know, my life is hell) and the only band on our flight - Look See Proof - getting held up at immigration for two hours while they tried to convince the customs staff that they weren’t too young to be flying without their parents (presumably).

So the weather is fine (about 19 degrees), Austin seems very nice (lots of bats flying around, oddly enough) and lots of delegate already getting drunk in the cities many bars, even though the event doesn’t really kick off till tomorrow.

In terms of the bands that everybody is talking about, there are already a few names that seem to be doing the rounds of record industry types (managers, A&R people, journos in the know - that kinda thing).

Lots of people have been mentioning The Fashion from Svendborg, Denmark () and America’s Fleet Foxes () one being a highly polished pop proposition, the other being a rather genteel pastoral folk project.

The other top tip was from Jamie Hince from The Kills who we caught up with during registration for the conference. Apart from his label mates These New Puritans, he reckons New York electro maestros Telepathy () are gonna be fighting off record deals after their shows.

Only time will tell.

As for tomorrow, we’re hoping to catch up with Make Model, Sons & Daughters, Johnny Flynn and R.E.M. are playing a special intimate show for just 2,000 people at the Stubbs barbeque.

Tasty.

Matt
