From the brown envelope

Betsan Powys | 14:40 UK time, Wednesday, 7 November 2007

Hat-tip for my colleague Guto for this one.

Guess by how much the Wales Office budget has gone up next year?

The answer is around 80%: a massive leap from £4.58 million to £8.44 million.

They get £8.25 million in 2009 but the bonanza's over by 2010. They'll have to get by on just £4.4 million.

'Dealing with legislative opportunities' obviously costs. A lot.

Well that would more than see the Wales Millenium Centre through for a year. I assume this is Peter's budgetary preparation for the unflinching commitment of his department driving through the delivery of a successful referendum for a Welsh Parliament.......

Almost 80% ?!?!

Well in my opinion, the sooner we have a Parliament in Wales, the better! It is beyond me that the Westminster Government can "tighten the belt" on it's block grant to the Assembly, but then throws an extra
£4 million to the Wales office!

Can someone explain to me what exactly is it that Peter Hain does for Wales these days? If it's not rejecting Assembly LCO's or speaking against the One Wales agreement to hold a referendum, then I can't think of anything!

Answers on a postcard please...

Its worse than that, the Wales Office budget is "top sliced" from the Welsh block grant. So it comes out of the Assembly budget.

Betsan you better look out, looks like Hain is going to have his dungeon done out.

Or perhaps he's having the door frames at the welsh office made Bigger, to get his head through.
