Sarkozy's teaser

Gavin Hewitt | 14:26 UK time, Friday, 30 October 2009

As ended French President Nicolas Sarkozy dropped an intriguing hint. He said that he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had agreed on a name to be the president of the European Council.

He would not say who that person was. However, if the French and German leaders have opted for Tony Blair then his is very much alive.

Paris and Berlin have always been the key to selecting the first president under the Lisbon Treaty. But the French president added these words: "the first words to come out of the hat are not the ones finally chosen".

Sounds bad for Blair, but until we know the mystery name Tony Blair should not be counted out. But this has not been a good summit for him.
