De-listing the Maze
Before flying off to the States, Edwin Poots reminded me on Inside Politics that an H block and the prison hospital at the Maze are listed buildings, so will stay in place even if there is no interpretative centre or "shrine" at the site. If he thought that was the last word, then he was mistaken. Today the MEP Jim Allister called on the Environment Minister Arlene Foster to de-list the buildings, presumably as a precursor to sending in the bulldozers. In his question time, the DFM Martin McGuinness denied there was any proposal to create a shrine.

It's nice to see Jim Allister with political candour calling for the de-listing of the 'republican shrine'. This approach deserves full support.
Knocking down the Maze would be like knocking down Alcatraz or Robben Island.
Letting the reprobates who inhabited it claim it as their own would be like letting neo-nazis have Hitler's bunker all to themselves.
Jim Allister is right in his suggestion. Some DUP MLA's forget that they are in power to make changes on behalf of the people, not to accept some petty rule about a listed building which has no merit.
Couldn't SF merely veto any proposal like that?
While I have no interest to what happens to the Maze I wish Jim Allister would learn to mind his own business. He doesnt represent anyone.
To alot of people the H Blocks and maze prison are of great sentimental value and bulldozing them will offend many! It is an historic site and should not be destroyed.
