Embracing the Monarch

Mark Devenport | 15:34 UK time, Friday, 1 June 2007

The Queen is throwing a garden party in Coleraine. The guest list includes Ian Paisley Junior who has put out a statement criticising Sinn Fein for not bothering to go, even though the SDLP's Margaret Ritchie is amongst the guests. Ian Jr says "the sooner republicans embrace the personalities of the Crown the better."

Sinn Fein's Martina Anderson has responded by acknowledging the importance of Royal visits to unionists, but telling Ian Jr he would be better off using his time by apologising to gays and lesbians for his recent comments.

Would Martina go to see the Queen if Ian Jr. went to Gay Pride?

Would he say "Derry" if she said "Londonderry"?

What about "F, G, haitch" and "F, G, aitch"?

Soccer/football?

The Deputy First Minister has already said "Northern Ireland" (although he nearly choked to death at the time), so why not go to see Her Maj. I'm sure they have lot's in common and could talk for hours.

Didn't Ian Paisly Senior say that Martin McGuinness and he would share out these tasks? He wouldn't pay obesiance to the pope and he didn't expect McGuinness to meet the Queen?

sinn fein love to claim that they are against the british monarchy. marty didnt complain though when he was appointed as the deputy first minister of the british devolved government in northern ireland. surely a deputy leader of a british parliament should be obligated to meet the monarch!

I'm by no means a shinner yet I don't see why Chuckle Brother number two should have to meet Mrs Windsor. As others pointed out the structuring of our devolved government is set up in such a way that Ian can do the PR events that Marty wouldn't want to and vice versa, though to be honest I've yet to see either miss a photo opportunity. They'd turn up to the opening of a bloody packet of chrisps as long as there was a camera present.

The monarchy is a hypocritical farce in Britain let alone in NI,
The sooner we create our own Republican British state, only then will we evolve real political justice for all our indigounous peoples of Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
